Ah, so this game turned out to be a train-wreck huh? Guess I'll just watch a playthrough on YT or something.

So sad. I can remember the intense days of playing NG as one of the first games I played on my shiny Halo edition Xbox. Such great times...

You know what, until Day 7
Ashtear boss
I actually considered replaying this one more time before I trade it in but...once I finish this game FUCK THIS GAME!

Hahahaha, looking at a playthrough, just part one looks awful. Don't tell me that woman that is "helping" you through the mission is there for every one of them? Also, that scene with the dude pleading for his life was pathetic.

I don't know if I can get through this.

Day 5 is definitely the best. Shows how this game was MADE for COOP and not killing 30 or so enemies alone in every encounter (which is the whole fucking game).

You know, despite me agreeing with all the negativity, I hope if (when) the Sigma version releases Hayashi will have listened to us and gave us a true sequel that pays homage to the series.

:D? :D?

Day 6 spoilers:

Doppelganger boss is back with claws, scythe and void ninpo and we are stuck with shitty dragon sword only.

If this isn't trolling I don't know what is.

And he is a cakewalk, like seriously, seriously easy. And to think fighting two of him were the best parts of NG1.

Ha. I was thinking along those lines during that part. I'm pretty sure I won't play a more disappointing game this year.

Hopefully, the WiiU version is better but I'm not counting on it. There are some very big problems with this game on a fundamental level that they would have to correct before I would even think about picking up that version and I just don't see that happening.

For those that played it, is Sigma 2 worth picking up? Or should I just stick with my vanilla NGII?

I just finished. I'm not going to go into a rant about all the aspects of it, as most of you know them and mentioned them already. I will just say this. This is a soul-less game. I never use that word to describe games, but it's far too appropriate here. Because most things wrong with the game is simply a lack of what we got in the first games. Weapons, enemies, exploration, etc. It's been stripped down to the barest of minimums while still maintaining functionality. And that's the highest praise I can give it. It's functional. It works. But no one should play a game for that reason alone. It's just so empty. There is nothing to this game if you played any respected action game besides it, not just the other NG games. It's not any kind of disaster. It's just...nothing. If this didn't have the Ninja Gaiden name tag, it'd already be lost to other interesting current titles. That's probably what will happen soon. And it should happen, because no title deserves to be more forgotten than this one.

I would be really ok with this game if they didn't remove the shopping and the upgrading system....

Dear god what were they thinking when they downgraded the game like this!!!! Did they really think that players will love and enjoy this?

I've never ever gave a game 6/10 in this generation, but this sh*t deserves it.... I feel soooo mad at the team :/

Sigma 2 is overall a more consistent and polished game definitely and one I'd recommend to most people getting into the game, but for someone who has only played ng2 it might feel way too easy and empty in comparison. The challenge in the higher difficulties only really comes from instakill grabs, just like NG3 (that and having to izuna drop BSNs like 6 times each on Ayane's level). The important difference is that unlike NG3 it doesn't just grab you randomly out of your combos and end your game after the 6th wave of a fight. You can just play normally but if you mess up you're punished for it.

Stick with vanilla unless you really want to play as Ayane, which is admittedly pretty awesome.

Instead of bothering to finish NG3 I'm just doing another run of NGS master ninja and actually having fun. :)

Major day 7 spoilers:

I couldn't stop laughing at the part where Ryu kills the red alchemist which ends up being Canna's cloned father. Especially the way Canna yells at Ryu and calls him a murderer is so cringeworthy.
They didn't just fuck up the combat and gameplay mechanics, but even go as far as fucking up the story, which is horrendous in this game. I never bothered with the storylines in the NG series, but it's unbelievable how bad the one in NG3 is. They didn't even try making a proper story in the previous games and yet ended up with one much better than NG3 (which was the main focus of the game).

Oh, and I also hate the new Ryu. He went from a complete cold badass to some socially awkward "Japanese Dark Hero".

I do not believe the NG brand will be able to recover and reach their former glory after Ninja Gaiden 3. RIP Ninja Gaiden series.

Dear Tecmo Koei,

Please fire Yosuke Hayashi.

Hopefully they'll make some chances after he ends up ruining DoA5 which I believe he will. I can't actually believe he managed to make a decent remake of NG1. I bet he was too afraid of going too wild and make major changes to the game when Itagaki was around.

I'm certain Itagaki had everything to do with Ninja Gaiden Black being one of the greatest video games ever made, regardless of whatever position Hayashi held at the time. Unless Hayashi has done a FUCKTON of brain shrinking drugs that removed his supposed former brilliance, there is absolutely no way this asshat had anything to do with NGB's greatness.

I was thinking about Ninja Gaiden Sigma when I wrote that. Hayashi was the lead designer of the game and it ended up being a good remake in my opinion. Maybe I give him too much credit for that, since it's a remake of Itagaki's work and as I said, he probably didn't have the guts to change too much things when Itagaki was a part of Team Ninja at that time (even if he wasn't involved with Sigma).

Glad to hear you found it at least functional, my copy sure wasn't. Ryu felt totally unresponsive to around 50% of my inputs. This is one of the worst games released this generation, the fact that it has the Ninja Gaiden name on it is a travesty.

Guys, Revenant of the Mask Day 8 right before the final boss on Master Ninja.
It's been 3 hours. I CAN'T FUCKING DO IT. You can't hit the guy. He does his dumb moves, is sitting there recovering, I attack: NOPE, DODGED IT, UR GRABBED NOW. OH UR ALSO DEAD.
The closest I've come to beating him is spamming 360Y and XYY. God I can't wait to finish this and never play this game again.

You are. The only credit you can give Hayashi is that he made the worst version of Ninja Gaiden. That said, however, Sigma is still an okay game. Even in that case, the good content in Sigma is the stuff that Hayashi didn't ruin with his terrible ideas.

I don't understand why the entire internet is hating on this game.

Yes it sucks for fans because they stripped it.

But I played through it, and it was fun. If you actually play this game without trying to nitpick you will enjoy it.

The graphics are good, the sound is good, the gameplay is fun, the environment are varied and the game keeps throwing new interesting things at you every minute. Also the story is somewhat interesting, you're not expecting ME3 storytelling here, but for an action game, it was better than the DMC4 story or the past ninja gaidens.

The trials are also very fun and leveling up is interesting. Plus, they are going to add free weapons and extra free trials.

I guess the only positive thing about all these negative reviews is maybe team ninja will realize they messed up as far as the fans are concerned, and make more of the DLC free.

Jeez. I can't even begin imagining what the thread for DmC will look like.

Just watched the Gametrailers review;

It's so weird. Shorter campaign, fewer weapons and moves etc. It's like the game had been published by EA or something like that.

Where is the gameplay fun ? Its always the same over and over wave after wave. Fight dudes -> arm glows -> UT -> ninpo glows -> ninpo -> the end. Repeat.

The game keeps throwing new interesting things at you every minute ? Have you played the same Game ? I guess you mean the many different heli fights lol or the different walls to climb.

Good story ? Man, thats like, your opinion.

Unresponsive controls in an action game is not nitpicking. Being a Ninja Gaiden fan has nothing to do with it. I am quite looking forward to the new direction of DmC, but if it ships with broken controls I will be upset.

yeah, i'm pretty bored with this game...maybe I'll finish it when there's a game drought or something.

also, I picked up NG2 360, which is suddenly much more fun than before haha. I have to start over on Warrior, but i'll do a dragon sword run for that whopping 5G achievement. glad there's cloud saving on Xbox now.

also, the white version of the Mumra costume might be my favorite NG costume:

There is a trick to get all weapon achievement on one go.

But I guess you must beat it first so you can start new game + with everything you need for said trick. Google or youtube it.

And last boss sure is fun at 10 fps!

yeah, watching the replays or something. I've played this before...the last boss is easy on normal mode if you save up all of your health items, including life of the gods and Lives of the Thousand Gods...gives you about a million health refills and a larger bar each time. On the downside, you have to go through the game with the starting life bar, but it's pretty damn easy on warrior-- especially with a lv.3 dragon sword starting in ch.3. Not looking forward to mentor and mnm, but I am going to give them a shot.

What i'm wondering is how people glitched the game to get 99999999999 karma in a 0:24 minute play time. the leaderboards are messed up because of that.

This game is a bone for the Ninja Dog. A Ninja Gaiden game for the casual gamer. In terms of graphics and story this is probably the most competent NG game yet. Ryu Hayabusa is a bad ass and the bottom line is I would rather play as him then 99% of other characters in other action games.

I can understand the hatred coming from Itagachist and the hard core elite... but I'm having fun with Ninja Gaiden 3! Hayashi was clearly inspired by Ninja Blade!

I think we played different games, I respect your opinion but I don't get how can you say that they keep throwing new interesting things at you every minute, it's just arena after arena with sitty kunai climbing and sitty QTE in the middle, is the most boring and uninspired game design in a game of this genre, even Dante's Inferno is more varied and interesting.

I'm tempted to fire up Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 after I finish Ninja Gaiden 3. Sigma 2 is my second favourite game in the genre this gen.

But then my backlog is pretty big as I acquired Killzone 2, Dragon Age Origins and Alpha Protocol recently, plus I want to finish off the Platinum trophy for Mass Effect 3. :(

Yea, basically you only use projectiles and ninpo all the way through Ch 12. Then you have the beat the last 3 with your weapon of choice for the achievement. That's how I did it anyway.

And yep, NG3 Master Ninja complete. 2.2 million Karma :)
I wish I could check the leaderboards, but it won't even let you do that without an online pass.
Days 1,3&4 are really the only hard ones. Some of those encounters...I still can't believe. And surprised to say, Day 5 was actually enjoyable overall. Day 6 too except for one part.
I don't know if I'll have the patience for Ultimate Ninja whenever it comes out. I probably won't have the game anymore either. I can just imagine what it is. Probably 1 hit kills/grabs. NO thank you.

For those that played it, is Sigma 2 worth picking up? Or should I just stick with my vanilla NGII?

Sigma 2 is... strange. On paper, it should be superior to NG2 vanilla. It gets rid of the bosses that really just didn't work on NG2, cuts down on the projectile spam that is often complained about, and adds more content.

Instead, Sigma 2 just creates more problems than it fixes. It cuts down on projectile spam to the point where every enemy encounter suffers for it with lowered amount of enemies that have a ton of health on higher difficulties (to the point where some grunt ninjas take 3 izuna drops to kill). It gets to the point where entire portions of chapters are just empty. The new bosses are usually terrible "giant statue" bosses that have the same boring move-set. And only one out of the two new characters are actually fun to play as. It adds a new heavy weapon, but also takes out the Windmill Shuriken, which was actually pretty useful in NG2 Vanilla. And it also adds a very useless gun weapon. It adds some pretty fun co-op, but completely gets rid of New game + for some reason.

For the short version, Sigma 2 creates more problems than it fixes. Some of the improvements are good, but you might as well just stick with NG2 Vanilla.

This thread is making me rebuy NGB.

Hell, this thread is making me want to dig up my old copy of NGB and just replay that.

There are karma farming points where you can go back and forth and make the same enemies spawn over and over again. I don't know if they took them out with the patch, but I played the game post patch and there's still an infinite respawn point in chapter 2.

I agree about NGS2 causing more problems than it fixes. Maybe the enemies are more balanced, but at the cost of fighting those NG2 360 mobs, which are a lot of fun. I couldn't tell if that was a technical compromise or Hayashi just kind of scrapping NG2's ideas.

also, no charge moves for projectiles, if i'm remembering it correctly. which sucks because a fully charged windmill shuriken thrown at a crowd of enemies is incredible...of course, there's no WS in sigma 2, no charge moves, and not even the blood and gore to make that move as entertaining.

I almost bought it on name alone. Clicked on a GameSpot video review and saw a 5.5 and thought it was a user score affected by assholes.

The shock and dissappointment when I realized the truth.

I fear for DoA now. Really makes you appreciate the talents of the Team Ninja personnel we had with the first NG games. Itagaki is greatly missed.

And that costume is the best. I always rock that one.

I think enemies that infinitely respawn post-patch don't add to your karma (but they drop essence of course). People can still easily cheat the leaderboards if they really want to though; the patch fixed all of the karma farming exploits that I know of, but there are still ways around it.

Plus, NG2's karma system is all kinds of fucked up. I did one MNM karma run, and it was pure torture from start to finish. Never again. Play the weapon survival missions if you want to play NG2 for score.

The team working on DOA5 is different than the one that worked on Ninja Gaiden 3. Plus the Alpha Demo is more promising than the NG3 demo ThoughtsofSpeaking gave his impressions of many months ago now.

If nothing else DOA5 will be better than DOA4. I know that's not setting the bar very high but from what I know Itagaki did NG very well but had no idea what made a good fighting game. I think part of it was his fetish with ninjas. He thought a ninja should always beat a wrestler or a grappler and consequently his idea of balance in fighting games was nonexistent.
