SEGA Vintage Collection: Monster World coming to XBLA!

Danny Dudekisser

I paid good money for this Dynex!

I don't give a fuck about Alex Kidd, and I already have (and love) Revenge of Shinobi, but! Super Hang-On. If that's the arcade version they're including, I'm so completely sold. I was waiting for it to hit the US Virtual Console, but it never did... so an HD version would be nice.

Seems to have a different aspect ratio from Revenge of Shinobi and the sprites seem larger than what the Genesis can pump out, so I'm crossing my fingers it actually is the arcade version.

Edit: Upon further analysis of the screenshots, Super Hang-On appears to be the arcade version. Sweet.

Sega is awesome again.

Wow the box art is horrible, but the inside is what matter and the inside here is glorious and beautiful. All of those games are good ones and they even went the extra mile in adding features to them. Godlike Sega is Real Sega.

I'm a big fan of even Revenge of Shinobi - it's a good game.

The Monster World collection? They're all action games, thankfully!

Revenge of Shinobi packaged by M2 should be cool. One of the best video games.

Revenge of Shinobi...

Really they're nothing like Zelda.

Monster Land is its own game while MWIII and MWIV share commonalities but ultimately go their own directions.

I'm in for Super Hang On but Sega will never get me to play an edited version of Revenge of the Shinobi with all the rad copyright infringing characters removed. My v1.00 copy of Super Shinobi with Spiderman, Batman, Rambo, the Terminator and Godzilla will always be by my side.

These threads are great. It's like getting the band back together as it's always the same great posters happy to get their SEGA favorites. :)

I can't believe I didn't know about this until just reading this thread. Holy shit! Only two days to go... Too bad about not including Dragon's Trap though. Best Master System game by far. One of the few games my Nintendo owning friends were jealous of.

Sega is on a fucking roll lately.

What an amazing trio of games! Granted they couldn't be more unrelated (Sega aside), but still awesome :D And these will be done by M2 as opposed to Backbone? Nice!

I hope Sega's getting the sales for these excellent ports, nice to see them finally doing things right!

did they change leadership recently or something?

Nope, they just scan the whole internet for feedback and requests now.
So let's keep asking for Skies of Arcadia II and Monster World V. :p

I'm a huge fan of both series and I can safely say that, MWIII in particular, resembles a lot a side-scrolling Zelda game.

Is the Alex Kidd package XBLA exclusive, or is it coming to PSN too?
The whole set was announced for Wii and PS3 back in May 2011, with XBLA assumed. Since both of these have popped up informally as early XBLA Marketplace information (the Monster World Collection link was removed shortly after it was found), you can bet there will be a formal reannouncement from Sega with full details in the coming weeks.

I'm glad they're giving these collections the full Sega Ages treatment. M2 can do no wrong.

Sucks that the Wii VC buyers probably won't be getting any of the bonuses like the jukebox, but then again, some of the more recent M2 VC stuff has features you wouldn't expect, so who knows.

This is the first time I ever heard of this series. Was it really popular back in the day? This is coming from a dude that had the Sega Master System before the NES.

Wonder Boy was moderately popular and quite influential, and it seems odd that Monster World IV wasn't released worldwide back in the day. I guess they couldn't work out how to sell a Wonder Boy game starring a girl, who knows.

Alex Kidd was never particularly popular, despite Sega's best efforts to turn him into a mascot. Most of the games featuring Alex Kidd weren't very good and many weren't even Alex Kidd games to begin with, but Miracle World is one of the better ones and probably the one people have the most nostalgia for (particularly as it was built into the hardware of many SMS consoles for a while).

The Monster World series are good in general, but Monster World IV is incredible. Lovely graphics, music, atmosphere, dungeon design, etc. etc.

I wonder if it'll have a quicksave feature, those games can be brutal and the checkpoints far and few.

I'll have to play through it again to see what M2's translation will be like. The fan translation is pretty good, but a little hilariously off. "You procured a key!"

Because Sega still manages to be completely incompetent even when they do something incredible.

I'm just beginning to believe that they're keeping it as a feather in their cap, like an FFVII situation.

They know WBIII is not only a fan favourite, but the best in the series, what I'd like to know is what it's going to take for them to release it, and if they do eventually, it'd better be a proper fucking remake.

When you say "FFVII Situation," that doesn't mean something good to me.

Anyway, Dragon's Trap/Monster World II is already available on Wii VC (in both SMS and TG16 flavors), so it's only PS3/360 that will have an incomplete set.

Sega are more likely to have their hand forced with WBIII than SE with FFVII :p

Didn't realise that the TG16 version was on Wii VC. Which just makes their absence from this even more ridiculous. Still, I'm glad we're getting the collection at all :)

Do you know if Nintendo has plans to allow Wii VC games on 3DS at any point? I don't have a Wii :(

Have their hand forced with what? FFVII is on PSN. SE didn't just put VI, VIII and IX up there.

VC on 3DS already exists but it is its own thing.

On the other hand, I would say it should be a safe bet that Wii VC will transfer to and continue on Wii U.

Sorry, I mean in the context of a remake/updated rerelease, not just the copy/paste job.

I should hope so, I'm interested in purchasing a Wii U.

Is there any reason the 3rd game is omitted from this collection?
They probably know that MWII is the most loved game in the series and they want to sell it individually.

OMG
Seriously, that would be beyond amazing.
