Why? The only thing that makes the platforming different in Galaxy compared to the segments in 64 is that you have nowhere else to go.

Being forced down a line doesn't add anything to the gameplay, it just takes away. If you are a focused player, you will go straight for the goal, if not you can take your time and explore the level.

Zuwah?! Anyway, there isn't any law that says non-linearity loosens gameplay. It is just what usually happens. Can't think of any popular examples where the more open game has the tighter mechanics, as intense of a focus as the more linear game is the series. That's probably more of a 2d/3d issue though.

Good example is Sonic Generations. I'm surprised at how open some of the 3D levels are compared to the last few games, but it still feels just as focused as unleashed, in which every level is extremely linear. In Generations there are lots of paths that intersect and overlap constantly so at any point you can jump over to another path. This opens the level without loosening the gameplay. Same can be done for Mario.

I like Sunshine a lot in spite of the many criticisms I have for it. Prominent among these is the accusation that between the island vacation theme and being an even more distant departure from the 2D games than Mario 64, it sometimes feels a more misfit and forced use of the IP than SMB2 USA.

Sunshine's theme and levels were fine, for the most part.
It was the controls that gave me problems.
I mean, especially compared to Galaxy, it just felt like you were controlling Mario horribly regardless of what happened.
And Yoshi, holy crap. First you had to find a specific fruit, and then he was damn near useless...

Hey, what if the reason they chose to skip Gamescom is because they're planning an earlier launch for Wii U and felt the August is too close to launch for it to be the first showing in Europe?

I wondered about that, but then again one would figure that Nintendo would be even less sensitive about comparisons and secrecy at that point..

I would like a launch before November though. More time for them to sell to the core, sell a second and third batch to holiday gift shoppers, and third parties would get a better payday on sales of their titles over the entire season.

The sooner Nintendo launches, the more of a sales advantage they end-up holding over the other two.

The controls weren't too bad. FLUDD was actually pretty cool with its myriad uses. Yoshi was unforgivably terrible, I'll admit that. I also think that the difficulty curve was a bit wonky. Everything was super easy until BRICK WALL OF PAIN for a few levels, then back to easy again. First time I hit those shadow mantas, I gave up for months…

Yoshi doesn't matter. I think he's shit, but he's involved in such a minor portion of the content; it's like hating Fluzzard and the Manta Ray. It's the Blue Coins and the doubling up on Red Coin challenges that are the real sin.

To clarify the last post; I don't mind the Island theme in and of itself, I mind the fact that there was very little variation other than repetitions on the one theme.

The controls are fine. There's a little bit too much velocity and distance on the first frame but Galaxy goes too far the other way.

This Saturday, 2012 NAB Show starts and Nintendo of America is attending. NAB Show is a premiere event for next generation technologies regarding content creation (imaging, software management etc.). Next generation technologies are shown and many deals are made. 90000+ media and entertainment professionals from over 150 countries attend the event which features 1500+ (exhibiting) companies spread over 745,000 net square feet.

I'm not expecting any major news from this, but I doubt Nintendo of America goes there to just stroll around. They are there to probably find a business partner regarding either Wii U or Nintendo 3DS, and it's a bountiful smörgåsbord they have to choose from. Already existing partner IBM will be exhibiting, and other notable exhibitors Nintendo could have interest in include DTS (audio technologies), Dolby Laboratories (audio technologies) Fujitsu Frontech North America (RFID solutions), THX Ltd. (audio technologies) and Western Digital (perhaps to make a deal to create Wii U branded hard drives), to name a few. As I said, I'm not expecting any major news from this, but perhaps Nintendo will announce a partnership with some company, similar to that of Autodesk and Havok.

Next week brings IBM's and AMD's earnings releases on the 17th (Tuesday) respectively 19th (Thursday) of April. I'm gonna listen to it, but I'm not expecting much. But it's a nice build up to the IR event on the 26th of April.

So, who's the next dev to say they can't (won't) make a game for Wii U because it needs to be unique?

I'll guess.. hmm.. Activision will use it as an excuse to not port one of their headliner titles over to the platform.

What I'd give my left nut to see is Nintendo openly and strongly and clearly calling companies and developers out on the bullshit. If it's bullshit, they shouldn't be afraid to label it as such, espeially if Nintendo at any point in the courting time period offers to actively help with the porting process. Call it out, Reggie! Call it out, Iwata! Stop being afraid of being called bullies and tell the truth - it's that simple.

Retro: The Wii U presents an interesting challenge for us. We want to make a new game for it, but we have to come up with innovative uses for the tablet controller.

Nintendo.

It can go either way with them, really. On the one hand we have stuff like CC Support in Mario Kart but no support in DKCR. Kirby and Yoshi got shanghaied to elevate the touch screen on DS, but NSMB/3D Land use it for a button/menu select.

I'd like to see them go back to the Mario 64/Sunshine style. I thought 3D Land was pretty similar to the Galaxy style, except there were no planetoids. That linear style works for portable Marios, Super Mario Galaxy 3D would be cool.

Bring on Super Mario Universe. 15 levels, 7 stars per level.

I also prefer 64/sunshine style with some adjustments, but honestly I don't even care because there is no "bad" mario style imo. It's all awesome.

I'm with you guys. I much prefer the open world style of Mario games. I'm one of those dudes who love 3d Marios but just can't handle playing 2D ones; they do absolutely nothing for me.

Super Mario 3dLand was gave me mixed feelings but I really enjoyed it.

Also, why the hell aren't Nintendo at Gamescom? Can someone enlighten me as to why this might be? They don't have to blow their load at Gamescom and they can save everything for E3 still. They could just have some kiosks with things we've already seen, just like last E3. They said they're doing other events around the place so they've obviously got stuff they're happy to show. Unless, those kiosks aren't going out and about until AFTER E3?

I dunno. And I played the *bleep* out of that game in high school. {*mind blown*}

If you put a gun to my head and forced me to choose, I'd say it's not a mainline Mario game, despite the mixed-message title.

I meant do you consider it in the Mario series on account of the name or outside the Mario series on account of the content?

Holy crap! Today's real megaton is that more than two people can have the same first name.
I hope Nintendo's briefing isn't on the 5th this year . . . it's a bank holiday this year in the UK due to the Queen being on the throne for 812years. I'll no doubt will be kept busy!

Maybe Nintendo can send the Queen a Diamond WiiU in celebration!

Pretty sure it is on the 5th (in NA, which would be closer to the 6th in the UK).

Mario is just a lot more fun to move in 64. The level-design in SMG2 is practically perfect, but the core of the experience--moving Mario himself--is a bit weak. All of the other 3D Mario games add a characteristic weight and momentum that differs from game to game.

And I'm going to be that guy and say that "Super Mario 4" is a 4-player Super Mario game. "New" Super Mario Bros isn't new anymore.

It's likely going to be a single player 2D game, actually.

I was kinda wondering how often Super Mario Bros could be labeled "new." I guess Nintendo recognized the need to move on from that naming pattern.
