March 2012 NPD Predictions - Closes April 9

Am I not looking at the data right, or is this information contradicting?

1. Xbox 360 sold more than PS3 and Wii combined.

2. Xbox 360 has over 40% market share. (Handhelds not included)

Shouldn't that leave 60% to PS3 and Wii thus proving wrong the first statement?

Retail spend on 360 was 457 million last year so the revenue isn't down as much as hardware units and I think hardware price would be lower due to price promotions. I suspect software was bigger than last year, ME3 might be really, really huge.

Another month of negative YOY for Microsoft.

Jan -29%
Feb -20.4%
Mar -14.3%

January doom and gloom not looking quite as bad now. Still expect a permanent price cut at some point and 2012 being bigger than 2011 is in the picture with a big holiday push.

The first fact is with all Xbox 360 Products, the 2nd is just consoles. We can assume from that, that it's selling software/accessories at a higher rate than Wii and the PS3 are on average together.

OK thanks, I didn't think about software and Kinect.

Retail spend on 360 was more than PS3 and Wii combined. Retail spend is more than just hardware.

Edit: beaten.

It signifies to me that the Xbox 360 hardware peak is over. It'll still sell, like the Wii did before its bubble burst, but its best days are behind it. Saturation after so many years can't be avoided, even with the tonic of a price drop.

March 11 wasn't so strong at 360 new releases, it doesn't have to be really, really huge.

both statement are right imho

reports total retail spend on Xbox 360 products in March reached $430 million, which was more than PS3 & Wii combined.

means that on value basis X360 > others two combined ( easy because the average price of X360 is higher than others, and SW + accessories are taken in consideration )

also

reports 371K Xbox 360 consoles sold in March, 13th consecutive month with over 40% share.

the over 40% share in units, is referred to the previous 13th consecutive month is not referred to march 2012 ( i believe it 's higher than 40% for this month, but the 13th consecutive are a more impressive stats for the tweet )

Wonder if there's any way at all we'll get Vita numbers. I'm sure they'll be terrible and Sony won't release it. And with such limited data, hope we'll be able to decipher things.

Being on top of a slowly sinking ship is admirable, I guess.

Beats the poor suckers drowning in the water.

I'd put chances of Sony giving us Vita hardware data at around 3%, especially given the weak data out of Japan recently. No more fear is needed.

Hopefully Nintendo will be kind enough to trumpet their portable sales the same way Microsoft did the console sales and give us both percents and numbers.

Beats the poor suckers drowning in the water.

Microsoft on the top of the ship, Sony treading water gasping for air, Nintendo holding on to its toy 3DS life preserver while waiting for a rescue boat later this year that may or may not have already been destroyed by some stray Nor'easter.

What was I talking about again?

"Frazier also pointed out that Nintendo's new Kid Icarus actually did pretty well: "In a list of the top 10 SKUs for the month (as opposed to top titles as listed here), 3DS Kids Icarus: Uprising would have been among the top selling individual SKUs for the month of March."

Mass Effect 3 can't offset 25% sales decline in US during March - NPD
Mass Effect 3 and Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City top the charts

NPD has revealed its March US retail sales data, and as several analysts predicted, despite BioWare's Mass Effect 3 topping the charts, overall it's not pretty. Total game industry sales dropped 25 percent to $1.1 billion, as total software across consoles, portable and PC fell 26 percent to $585.1 million, while hardware sales plunged 35 percent to $323.5 million.

"While it was a disappointing month, and first quarter, for new physical retail sales of video games hardware, software and accessories, it wasn't entirely unexpected given guidance we've seen from several sources," said NPD industry analyst Anita Frazier. "Outside of new physical retail sales, we find that the consumer spend on content on used games, rentals, subscriptions, mobile games, social network games, digital full game downloads and add-on content accounted for an additional $2.5 billion to $2.7 billion across the U.S., U.K., France & Germany in Q1 2012."

As you can see in the top 10 games chart below, besides Mass Effect 3 game sales were also driven by Capcom's latest Resident Evil title, and with the Major League Baseball season getting started Sony's newest MLB: The Show also fared well on PS3 and Vita.

Frazier also pointed out that Nintendo's new Kid Icarus actually did pretty well: "In a list of the top 10 SKUs for the month (as opposed to top titles as listed here), 3DS Kids Icarus: Uprising would have been among the top selling individual SKUs for the month of March."

Microsoft PR. lol Raccoon City
NPD highlights in March include:

· Holding 42 percent share of current-generation console sales, Xbox 360 sold 371,000 units in March, maintaining the number-one console spot in the U.S. This marks the thirteenth consecutive month Xbox 360 has held more than 40 percent of the current-generation console market share.

· Total retail spend on the Xbox 360 platform in March (hardware, software and accessories) reached $430 million, the most for any console in the U.S. and more than the spend on PS3 and Wii combined.

· During the month of March, Xbox 360 held five of the top 10 U.S. console game titles including: “Mass Effect 3,” “Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City,” “NBA 2K12,” “SSX” and “Major League Baseball 2K12.”

Last month, Xbox 360 delivered new voice-controlled TV apps from Comcast and HBO GO in the U.S., and MLB TV throughout North America, making it easier to enjoy your favorite TV shows, sports and music with voice control and Kinect voice search. Xbox has grown rapidly to become the best-selling Internet-connected entertainment device for TV. Since the entertainment apps on Xbox 360 started rolling out last December, total hours spent on Xbox LIVE globally has grown 30 percent year over year.

Later this year, Xbox 360 will deliver a strong portfolio of blockbuster titles, experiences and add-on content, including additions to the famed “Halo” and “Fable” franchises and groundbreaking experiences like “Kinect Sesame Street TV” and “Nat Geo TV.”

That could go either way. March is the first month for YOY comparisons for 3DS (which ware expected to be negative), and if Wii wasn't impressive, there really isn't much to share. I would think chances are greater that we see more info from Nintendo than from Sony, which is consistently quiet and cryptic with its NPD reactions.

Can't wait for Microsoft E3 when we get to see more Kinect Sesame Street TV, Nat Geo TV and COD Blops 2.

1 to 10 odds Sony gives some vague inconclusive Vita numbers that are lumped in with whatever product they can find to compare or lump it in with.
