Fez's dev to japanese developers: "your games just suck"

I was confused because I unsubscribed from the Fez thread (due to not actually being able to play it and it having finally reached the point of spoiler discussions), but then Fez showed up in my subscriptions again.

Why are people still talking about this? Grow up, get over it. Seems silly to keep bringing it up again and again.

"20 minutes" of watching somebody play a puzzle game doesn't really give someone any sort of license to say if it is good or bad.

When did I say I was watching?

20mins what part was your 'friend' up to?

Some part with waterfalls and a lighthouse. There were a few cool parts, but I thought it was pretty unremarkable overall. Not gonna claim to be an expert on the game or anything, but it's not something that appeals to me.

How are people still upset about this? Yes , it was a stupid thing to say. But can you really judge a man, his studio and his game over one thing, and not the rest that he has achieved? He has probably revitalized an entire genre with Fez that has been dead for years.

SEGA treated their American counterparts like shit in the 90s, going so far as to feel they weren't worthy of their previous game engine (Yuji Naka and the NiGHTS engine) and I am certain since then, most of those hating on Fish in this thread would have bought a SEGA game since then. How dare you support SEGA!!

And wow at the dude who thought FF XIII-2 is better than this without having played it...that's straight up trolling.

I still think that what Fish said was something that could only come from someone with shitty taste, but I find myself wanting to throw down the 800 pts to see if those extra puzzles are actually as tough as people are making them out to be.

Where my money goes or who it supports? Whatever. Monumentally less important than how much pleasure the game will give me.

I probably won't pick it up any time soon, due to the amount of stuff I have to play right now and how completely mediocre my experiences watching and playing the game have been, but if time was unlimited!

He's made one game in five years. If he shows he can actually put together a good second project, then we'll see then.

Also, the genre wasn't dead, and Fez alone isn't revitalizing anything.

This is the Shadow Complex situation all over again. And I'll say the same thing I said to people back then who were refusing to buy that game...."Your loss"

Is he referring to 2d platformers when he talks about revitalizing a genre? Because that's a pretty damn amazing comment. Nintendo is responsible for that if you're going to credit anyone with it. They've released two 2D platformers in this generation that have sold over 50m copies combined. And that's without bringing up stuff like Kirby and Wario.

I guess this thread revival was inevitable since the topic is forbidden in the Fez OT. But, given that Fish finally apologized and stopped digging himself deeper, it's time to move on. If he's the jerk we think he is, there should be plenty of opportunities for future outrage. If not, maybe he learned something this time around.

Just out of curiosity, which genre are you referring to? There has been no shortage of excellent platformers for the past several years.

Well, historically speaking the 3 gaming powerhouses were the US, UK, and Japan. Just in terms of volume any of those three would outstrip "the rest of the world" by themselves.

The UK has declined drastically of late, and Canada has gotten a lot more significant due to subsidization (largely non-indigenous though, a lot of ex-pat Europeans and Americans). Europe as a whole has remained pretty much on a level volume wise, but has made great strides qualitatively.

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!

He did what now?

Phil Fish hasn't revitalized shit, and never will.

I said I did play it.

If I played the first 20 minutes of FFXIII-2, a fetch quest for 4-5 items in a boring locale, would you honestly be able to say I could judge the game?

And I am referring to the platform puzzler, pen and paper, old school problem solvers. Yes there have been no shortage of platformers the past few years, but nothing compared to the nineties, and I sure don't recall anything like Fez being released lately, unless I have missed it. The success of Fez (it has 16800 downloads last time I checked, 2 days ago?) as a small, affordable XBLA title will definitely result many games like it over the next few years. Sadly, most posters won't experience this because of some moral high ground.

See, to me, this sort of comment is more offensive than anything Phil Fish said. Claiming he will never be good is dumb. You don't know that at all. So you're probably just extracting your feeling about him to potentiality of his projects' performances. Some sort of ad hoc.

oh good, gaf-pop gifs.

I got a code for the game, so I wouldn't even have to support Fish with my own money in order to play Fez. But, I've not yet decided if I'll even support him with my time.

Might seem petty of me, sure, but his part in all of this really bothered me. Wasn't even just the initial comment—it was how he reacted to it and his attitude afterward. I'm sure Fez is a great game, and I did have interest in it—at the same time, I have so many other games still to play that it wouldn't be like I'd be depriving myself of enjoyment.

well said.
if anything, still gonna wait on the PC port to play on my tv saturday mornings. end of story.

ps ya'll should go back over phil fish's GAF comments from years ago, especially the games as art debate.

He has probably revitalized an entire genre with Fez that has been dead for years.

Can I have it, if you're not gonna use it?

PC isn't going to happen unless controller is made mandatory.

Edit: Fuck posting ITT in any more, what a bunch of bitter, transparent posters we have in here.

For all that save state platforming action in the game? Really?

or does the feel of keys not convey the proper experience

edit: oh he left. Also, someone explained below.

So Western means "everything but Japan"?

This is getting weird, you guys.

It pretty much has since the UK and the rest of europe became legitimate dev areas. I know it may not sound fair compared to tiny little Japan by itself but they lump them all together because they make very similar games as each other. Eastern Europe strays a bit from the current mold but they're still making similar games as NA did in the 90s and early 2000s.

Yeah, absolutely impossible to work around that.

Edit: I also think that it's impossible to port Sword & Sworcery to PC unless Capy makes rotatable screens mandatory.

i'm a controller guy, but that's a really weird caveat. it's just inviting workarounds and pics being sent to your twitter of people playing with racing wheels and flight sticks.

oh, you got salty. nevermind.

They'd have to change multiple puzzles in the game if you're not using a controller. You would never be able to solve them with KB+M, racing wheels or a flight stick. That's what he meant and he's right. In its current state the game is literally unfinishable without a controller.

Suit yourself, but you're not giving him money out of the kindness in your heart. You're buying a good video game-tape.

So ? It could be the best game ever made, I still can live without playing it, if I decide that the people who made it does not deserve my money.

That's disgusting...

That is the truth about game development, espcially indie development. We let some ugly stuff occur in our game but have since fixed some of it. When even 100 people test the game beyond the 3 or 4 in your staff/partners you find a load of stuff that should have been fixed. Faulting a small dev house for bugs is incredibly unfair really.

ah, really? wasn't aware of that - how are they locked into controller use specifically though?

I'd like to think someone would be more forgiving of a slow intro in a 50 hour JRPG than a comparatively short puzzle/platformer, but what do I know.

I'll spoiler tag this because I have no other way of elaborating
they use rumble. And more specifically they rely on the fact that the 360 controller has 2 independent motors for this feature.
It's quite clever and obviously they could just remove those puzzles or make alternate solutions but as it stands the game is only possible on a controller.

Hey, so I bought and played Fez this morning for ~20 minutes. It was pretty rad. I'm really digging it. But I'm confused. Does that make me a good person or a bad person?

This thread will bubble back from the dead for as long as Fez took to make, it seems.

Fixed.

This. Some salty ass people up in hea.

The game is awesome, and the intro to NG+ is Phil's response to the haters:

Instead of a Fez, the dealwithit.gif sunglasses come down from the sky onto Gomez's face, in true dealwithit.gif fashion. We need a gif of this ASAP
