I can't pick just one. So here's a whole bunch!

Metal Gear (NES) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2MVBAUUCuB4

Blue Shadow / Shadow of the Ninja - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6uqQofm3zTU

Castlevania: Curse of Darkness - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zTz5_gfRrYM

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P5iPHgqiivg

Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=flzPn29vgjE

Space Harrier - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_Tam9lv1KQ

Legend of the Valkyrie. Right from the start it tells you will be on a fantastic adventure.

Never heard of this game before, but I really like this music. Reminds me of another great "Stage 1" BGM, Chiki Chiki Boys: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rukEdZjNqI8

Come to post any of these:

Streets of Rage 1 or 2

Shinobi III. Can't be beaten

The first level of Ikaruga has some pretty kick ass music.

"Flight" from Panzer Dragoon. I'm pretty sure Sega wanted to outright wow people with the Saturn, so having a full-blown orchestral piece serve as the backing to the surreal sunken city landscape (complete with impressive-in-1994 water effects to seal the deal) was a great choice. Unfortunately, it must've been somewhat prohibitively expensive to use that orchestra, because they only did two other tunes in the game (the title theme and the credits theme), but what was done still holds up quite well today. Comparatively, Zwei's ("Destiny Begins") is a bit too erratic and shrill, although Saga's ("A Premonition of War") is a pretty good tune for coming to grips with the dragon's overworld controls, featuring the credits theme for the first time.

"Terraport"/"Bamboo Mill" from Vectorman. Vectorman has a pretty great soundtrack filled with fairly subdued techno, and this is arguably the best track in the game (I think I prefer "Tidal Surge", though). Always good to start with your best foot forward.

There, five more selections. Although the clear winner here is "Go Straight", of course.

not technically a first level song, but it was early in the game....

The correct answer is Sonic CD.

Not only is Palmtree Panic (Present) an already iconic song, but it also has a Bad Future, Past, and Good Future version which all sound incredible. The US version for its present version is still pretty good too.

Present
Bad Future
Good Future
Past
Present (US Version)

It's yet to be topped, IMO.

Many of my favourites have already been covered, so I'll not mention them again.

But this was pretty damn jaw dropping back in 2001...
Sonic Adventure 2 - City Escape

I basically read the thread title as "Castlevania and Sonic music thread" since those series always hit the mark for the opening stage. Now to try and pick a Castlevania track that hasn't been used so far....

As for Sonic, Azure Blue World from Sonic Adventure.

With most of the best music tracks already posted, I can only add:

- Shining Force II - Lively Town

- Crusader of Centy - World Map

- Bionic commando - Amiga

- Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge - Amiga (Intro, but had to post this anyway).

- Alien Soldier - Runner/AD2025

- Viewpoint - Not All There. Full sountrack is amazing. Never played so far, though.

- Super Hang On - Arcade. Any of the selectable tracks.

- Mega Turrican / Turrican 3

- Out Run Arcade

Nemo

Will Eat Your Children
Sonic games nail it the hardest, Mario doesn't have a candle against them IMO. Except for maybe the first Galaxy game

Isn't this just essentially a list thread, which were supposed to be banned from now on?

No, not at all.

Unofficial voting threads are out, not these kind. No one is compiling a list. Hell, if we deleted threads like this, we'd lose half the threads in gaming and a large number in OT.

Excellent input. Well done.

My last recommendation.

Halo Reach - Winter Contingency

It's 12 minutes long, it's nearly all worth listening to but if you want to cut to the meat

8.00 minutes in is awesome.

9.40 is also awesome.

I was genuinely curious, but thanks for being a dick bro. :D

I'm GLAD threads like this don't fall under that rules jurisdiction, because then I can find more awesome game music.

As for your post here in particular, Reach has great music. Especially, Overture which is the first piece you get to hear when you boot up the main menu of the game. :D

Though Lumines and Streets of Rage II would be top of my list, I see they're already well-represented. Thus:

Scott Pilgrim, Anamanaguchi - Another Winter

I'm biased because I come from Toronto, but hanging out at Bloor and Bathurst with this song on and seeing a TTC bus roll by always gets to me.

There have been so many good answers here. But the one that first came to my mind?

Beyond Good & Evil

When you play this and the music cuts out and goes vocal only...it was one of those few special moments in gaming when the music absolutely makes the moment perfect. I was hooked from that moment.

Actually, I figured out the reason MegaMan X's theme probably stands out the most to me.

It's like the Wily Stage 1 from MM2

BUT AT THE START OF THE GAME! THERE CAN ONLY BE MORE HYPE TO COME!!!
