Already mentioned by MyEpitomeCliché and quoted several times.
I don't know how Tim and Geoff Follin did this. It has to be black magic or something. How is it possible to get out these sounds from a NES?

I like several songs from this soundtrack, I really like how it sounds.

F-Zero GX - Mute City Theme

Braid - Upstream. It's so rare to have great music in a puzzle game, so when this song came up during the first level it instantly made me feel in love with the game.

Fez - Home. Similar thing, but with an adventurous vibe that complimented the gorgeous first area.

Sunsoft had some incredible tunes in their games and I'm still baffled at how good some of them sound today. But this is my all time favorite Sunsoft first level song, from...

Journey to Silius

The next one would have to be...

Ninja Gaiden II

A game is so good, even Anthrax plays it!

YEAH!!

But the real answer is, and will always be, Super Mario Bros.

Also very happy to see both Super Castlevania IV and Axelay mentioned. Did you people know they were composed by the same guy?

Another good one that I don't think has been mentioned yet: Super R-Type. If you let it play through a couple of times, you'll hear an extended section that's absolutely brilliant. You never heard that when playing through the level, since the level was too short.

And ANOTHER Tim Follin gem: Spider-Man vs. X-Men (SNES). I put on this game so many times just to listen to the music. Almost never played it.

The interesting this about this is that the Famicom version wouldn't qualify for this thread. While that track is in the game, it's not on the first level. It's from level 2. They must have re-arranged the tracks for the western versions.... it makes sense to move their best track to the beginning to pump you up!

Waouh, never knew about that. I actually prefer the western order of the tracks, it fits the levels better, I think. This should be put in the mindblowing facts thread.

Too many to be comprehensive:

Super Mario Bros is definitely number 1 though.

Green Hill Zone is ridiculously good.

Mega Man 7/Mega Man and Bass have really good starters too!
EDIT: U.N Squadron has an awesome opener as well!

SILVER SURFER, NES

There's been quite a few mentions of it in the thread already, but 'quite a few' isn't a scientifically acceptable quantity. Research indicates that the acceptability minimum-threshold of Silver Surfer mentions in a thread such as this measures in at 'bloody loads of'.
