Some good choices, but one vastly overlooked because it's from a vastly overlooked and oft forgotten game.

Not as deep as he thinks
Expect HUGE zones unlike anything you've ever played in a 2D Sonic game before along with one of the coolest soundtracks you'll ever hear. The time warp mechanic is a hit or miss depending on who you ask, but I think it's pretty neat looking at the zones during their perspective time periods. I love the game simply because there's just a lot of exploration to do and so many different paths you can take to reach the goal. I think you'll digg it.

Ahh, this thread. So many good memories. So many "correct" answers. Miracle Warriors on SMS is another. Golvellius, Zelda, Guardian Legend, Zillion, SpellCaster... (sigh) I'm old...
Round 1-1 (Shooting Star) - Ristar
The entire Ristar OST is great, but this track in particular is really funky and upbeat. Perfect way to kick off a charming and colourful game IMO.

OK, this is a strange entry I'd imagine, but I always thought Neo Contra had an absolutely awesome track for its opening stage. It's perfect for the type of game it was and really pulled me into it. Seriously, give it a listen.

I'd classify that as more of a boss arena than an actual level tbh.
Either way, Bianco Hills is kinda...ehh. Pales in comparision to 64's first level - Bob-Omb Battlefield is a true classic.
Target Renegade on the C64. I have no idea if the NES version has the same OST but I love the C64 version of the soundtrack and especially the track on the first level.
Speaking of the Follin brothers, Equinox (a sequel to Solstice that few seem to know of) has mostly ambient tunes but it really made an impression on me from the get go:

Hell yes.
This track takes everything great about traditional high energy synth-ey video game music, and wraps it all up into one concentrated pure awesome 1st stage music. Masterpiece.
The game is awesome too.
