They are developing games for iOS, though.
However, it's not their giant budget games, because the return on investment simply isn't there.

I don't know about that. Charging $40 on iOS is risky but I'm not going to say it flat out won't work.

I'd like an open-world Mario title that builds on Super Mario Sunshine. But regardless, I reckon they've shown enough to get me to purchase one at launch.

As an aside, Lego City Stories seems potentially much more interesting (and fun) than whatever Rockstar can come up with for GTA5.

How do idevices do in Japan?

They do really well there. iPhone is currently the best-selling smartphone in the country, and creeping up on best-selling phone overall.

I hear app sales are slowly getting stronger, but nowhere near DS or console game level.

The thing I think a lot of folks are overlooking about Wii U this fall is that games that would have been ignored on Wii in the past due to them being on weaker hardware now won't be.

So the Wii versions of things like Madden, Call of Duty, WWE games etc. will now actually be in the running with their HD twins counterparts for a purchase. I think it's probably a pretty safe bet that a majority of these annual release big titles will make day and date or close to it this fall. I wouldn't count on it for the non-annualized stuff like Bioshock, Tomb Raider, RE6 and whatever else but you get the picture.

So yeah, the Wii U could theoretically have a lineup this fall that comes within striking distance of the competition depending on what exclusives it launches with and how much effort third parties put behind their ports.

For a launch to be "pretty damn good," I expect quality games hitting up numerous major genres with at least 2 or 3 must have killer-apps. If he just means that we'll get yet another CoD (yawn) then his sensebilities are way off.

No console have ever released with more than two killer apps (SNES had SMW, N64 had SM64, GC had none, Wii had Wii Sports + Zelda, no PlayStation have released with a killer app, Xbox had Halo.. and 360 had none), some consoles may never even get a single one during their lifetime. To expect 3 at launch is crazy, but if anyone could make it happen it’s Nintendo. What kind of games would you consider a „killer app”?

Also, the problem with porting with Wii also was definitely in some part due to 1. Controller 2. Online infrastucture

Although controller is still different, but I guess it will be much easier for devs to do lazy porting.

Hopefully nintendo does not share this mentality. WiiU needs these games and gamers like myself are very much prepared to buy them.

If we're talking about 3rd parties, the Wii U tablet controller is enough of a gamechanger for me to buy Wii U versions of multiplat games.

I bought an Archos 101 g9 Turbo android tablet a few weeks ago, and using it in conjunction with my HDTV is more than enough POC for me to see the potential of a dual screen home console setup. Well, that and my collective experience with the DS/3DS :)

It's going to be an awesome generation.

Same shit was said for Bioshock 1 and the ps3. Nintendo needs to be a go-getter like Sony was with the ps2. I'd love for my WiiU to be a one stop shop.

This is what I'm hoping. They need to go up to third parties and convince them to bring their titles to the Wii U. I think they've probably done that so E3 will be interesting. I would love to just own one console this generation if possible.
Fallout 4 for Wii U please :)

Exactly. It's so crazy how some ninty fans can say things along the lines of "we don't need those titles". So we've come from no third party support to being able to pick which ones we need and don't need? In my eyes everything should be on this thing for it to be the most competitive. Tell you what though: if bioshock infinite was available on WiiU i'd wait and get it for the WiiU launch.

Same here. The screen tearing issue would be resolved if it was on WiiU.

I can't see how people would say something like that. It's always good to have these titles because they're different from what they would normally play. I bought a 360 due to lack of third party titles on the Wii, so I'm hoping I don't have to do the same again this generation. :p

Here's hoping for a Bioshock Wii U announcement at E3.

Even if he appeared on the devs reel saying how awesome the Wii U was going to be, here's what Ken Levine (Irrational devs) said:

"Just to be clear, there are no plans. I'm not saying it can't happen, but we have no plans to do any games for that platform," he told IGN.

He doesn't just say Bioshock won't be on Wii U, they don't plan to make any games for it at all.

Well, technically, if they were already doing it they would be beyond the plans stage.

Guess that means no Bioshock for the Wii U.

It should at the very least be a competent launch:

Assassins Creed III
Batman Arkham City
Call of Duty : Black Ops 2
Darksiders 2
Madden 2013
Ninja Gaiden III : Razor's Edge
Pikmin
Super Mario Bros.
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Online

Those are all very possible IMO and that's just of the top of my head. There will be announced title that miss launch, and new stuff shown that will make launch.

Even if it's just these, there's several I want. My PS3 died so i haven't played ANY of those (The ones in existence of course).

It would be more up to the publisher anyway, Irrational doesn't have the time or resources to mix in another platform in the middle of their dev cycle. 2K could have another dev do a port, just like they did with the PS3 version of Bioshock, if they or Nintendo desire such a thing.

Honestly for me there isn't anything there outside of Pikmin. But it definitely has the potential to be a really solid line up.

So you are projecting they will have two games at launch. How is that going to get people to buy the system when the audience they are most trying to connect with already owns a PS3 or Xbox? :\

Don't forget Killer Freaks, a third party exclusive.

Nothing I want from that list to be honest. Not even Pikmin.

Hope they have something from Retro.

It's way to early to predict, but rumors of Wii U's power and with PS4 / Nextbox coming probably holiday 2013, I don't know if it's wise to get your hopes up that Wii U will be the only machine a gamer would need.

Sure, it'll get the best versions (probably) of PS3 and 360 games, and of course wonderful Nintendo exclusives in HD -- But even if it gets an aggressive head start, what happens in 2014? Will third parties pass the U up because it can't run the engines made for the other two platforms?

It would be great if Nintendo invested in the future by putting as much power as they can in the U, but they're not big fans of breaking even / taking a loss with their consoles. Keep in mind the tablet technology + streaming is likely an expense that competitors will use for higher end graphics, so who knows how it will play out?

Plus whatever title Retro is working on. I know that's included in "announced titles that will make launch" but it deserves a separate mention. Nintendo has been EXTREMELY quiet for a very long time with many of their teams and I think it's going to be almost an overload of info.

Rumors point to it being capable of running them. We'll see if that's true or not.

During the Gamecube era Nintendo patched up relations with Japanese 3rd parties for the most part. Now with the Wii-U it seems like they're at least getting some support form the biggest western 3rd party publishers who port their games to everything anyway, but a big remaining problem is still the slightly smaller guys who've never worked with Nintendo before.

Two in particular I'm talking about are Take Two and Zenimax. Maybe the Wii-U will get a version of GTAV, but Irrational and Bethesda have no existing relationship with Nintendo. I could even say the same thing for DICE, BioWare, and Visceral, but EA might just make them port to Wii-U anyway.

On that subject, what kinds of Wii-U features do you guys conceive showing up in these ports?

If BioShock Infinite were designed for the Wii-U's interface I could see it having a System Shock 2-style inventory system, but a port would probably be little more than maps and maybe quick access to the sub menus. A Fallout game could have the Pip-Boy as the touch screen! Sub menus and pause screens is probably what a lot of ports will end up doing.

Really? Any particular reason why or just speculating?

It was pretty rough at E3 last year.

Pure speculation. I think Ubisoft will have Ghost Recon and AC3 at launch. I don't think they really need a third title, especially one that would be overshadowed by COD.

I'd buy it for Mario and Pikmin if it was a good price. The rest are just PC games to me, but I reallllyyy want a new Pikmin. I'd also love if it had the multiplayer part from 2, but expanded or maybe coop. Probably won't happen but that'd be nice.

Oh, I'd prefer it get those, too. I can't speak for other folks, but I expect that Wii U will be taking the lion's share of my gaming time this fall so whoever skips their port will likely get ignored. Going forward I'd really like it if the U was a one stop shop for the majority of third party stuff. It's not like I can't just buy one of the competitor consoles though so it's not the end of the world if it isn't.

I don't think you can necessarily put some of these games not coming out on Nintendo. Developers have a long history with PS3 and Xbox. They still have to come to grips with Wii U development. Since they're working on high budget, ambitious projects it'd take a good chunk of lead time to get the U version up to snuff. Nintendo throwing money at them won't necessarily remediate that.

Would sadden me a lot if these games didn't come to Wii U sooner or later, because the most likely story would I sell my PS3 when I pick up the Wii U or at the very least stop buying games for it, like I did when I picked up my PS3, I stopped buying Wii games.

Also, I have no idea what the hell Black Ops 2 will do with that controller.

For the campaign, I wouldn't expect anymore than moving the HUD to it (which, given how ridiculous the HUD has gotten, may end up being a blessing in disguise). I imagine they could do more with it in multiplayer, where you can just drag and drop your loadout, edit your custom emblems, and have a couple of the killstreak rewards work with it (like how the UAV operates in Ghost Recon Online).

Simple stuff, but in theory a bit more user-friendly than the normal setup.

Hey quick question about controls. Are we to assume that we're to play these games with Classic Controllers? I love all four of my CCs, but it certainly isn't my first choice when playing AAA titles like Assassin's Creed III or Darksiders 2. No rumble and no L3/R3 buttons are a bit of a deal-breaker to me.

Because fuck if I'm playing on the tablet unless I absolutely have to.

How about trying the tablet first before making a decision? You can't take CC support for granted, most games will be customized to make use of the tablet and if the Wii is any indication not too many developers will bother to add a classic mode.

In 25 years of gaming, I don't think I have ever heard anyone say a console's launch wasn't "looking pretty damn good." Things are only ever considered bad in hindsight.

Being able to edit my class after unlocks between matches instead of navigating through menus on a time limit would be nice.

Oh I will, but I think holding a controller that wide presents some ergonomic problems, which has been brought up by people who have actually used the thing:

Jason Schreier said:
Though it isn’t too heavy, there’s something a little uncomfortable about its width. The Wiimote and Nunchuck feel like natural extensions of your hand; in contrast, the Wii U’s tablet is more like an especially wide version of the Wii’s Classic Controller.

I'm hoping there's a better mold of the tablet to be debuted at E3. John Davison calling it "cheap", "a piece of shit" and a "giant DS screen" does little to encourage me.

It's also worth nothing that my purchase of the Wii U is solely contingent upon Nintendo letting me transfer ALL of my Virtual Console content to the new console.

Yeah, after all, GameSpot has never shown bias against Nintendo.
