Dragon's Dogma Demo Impressions

People defending 20 fps? Would not happen if this was the same case across both platforms. Would rather punch myself in the eyes, less painful.

Honestly, if the full game requires me to have three companions who want to lead me by the hand and constantly call out the weaknesses and attacks of every enemy I encounter, frequently shouting over each other to do so, I might as well pass.
Pawns only point out weakness or paths if they have encountered them prior.

Choose your pawns carefully.

Still, so many people already mentioning diablo here...

Oh well, I guess it eats sales of every game released near it.

It is one of the most awaited games for pc gamers and understandably a lot are hyped over it, however Their are people who are not interested in diablo and are put off by the beta as well.

It releases one week after anyways, not on the same date either, also its not releasing on pc for now so their something to play in the consoles.

ill prefer mp3 and DD over diablo 3 for now , didnt like the beta much

Okay, there's an option to not let my pawn get hired by other players, but what about the other two? From what I saw on the quick look video, you can't tell what other pawns have seen when you're hiring them.

Prior to choosing the two other pawns there's a screen showing their experience, if they experienced something you have not it will say 'quest unknown' or 'enemy unknown' with a star rating show how familiar they are with things you haven't experienced.

Choose lower level pawns and be sure to check their experiences so they are as clueless as possible if you want to figure things out yourself.

If your character is overpowered in the demo I imagine the pawns were as well, so like I said, probably a poor representation of the game.

But you can, there's a huge list of locations, quests, monsters with star ratings next to them when you are looking at pawn statuses. If you have not seen an area, quest or monster that the pawn has seen then it will show up as a question mark.

Edit: beaten *le sigh*

Diablo is such a bore.

Well demo seemed interesting. Aside from terrible framerate. Wasted 30 minutes in character creator just to play 10 minutes of combat without my characters...

But I don't really wanna play little chunks of game like this so I'll wait for the release date since I've been sold on previews.

It took me 6 hours to download the demo...will be playing it today at lunch.

I'm familar with the game and have been following it. A shame it seems they have missed the mark on the demo.

That said, Im looking forward to seeing how the combat works. Im well aware the game is supposed to be difficult where if you stray off the path you get crunched...Im well aware the game is open world. I'm will aware the game is heavy on equipment.

Well that's something at least. I still say they talk too much.

You really got to play the griffin portion of the demo, it uses your characters and it at least more open feel.

Sadly I wasn't sold on the game until I played the second part of the demo. The manicore fight really didn't excite me at all.

Add me to the not very impressed people. Feels much more like Dragon Age 2 than Monster Hunter, Dark Souls, Skyrim or whatever game we wanted it to be like.

Hopefully it's a bad demo because I'm still intrigued by the concept of it all.

I only did the first mission, and created my character and pawn for the full game. Overall i really liked it. Only gripe i have so far is the banter from the pawns can get annoying, but from what ive read here you can turn that off in a setting in the final game right?

We'll see what i think tonite after i do the second mission from the demo. Still a day 1 for me so far.

So i played both the 360 and PS3 demo, there was some slight screen-tearing in both of them but i only noticed it during the cutscenes, couldn't detect any major graphical or performance differences.

Gameplay and especially the camera are so chaotic, lots of button-mashing...fighting the chimera with pawns feels like God-Mode...fighting it without them is a pain in the ass because this goddamn game has no descent dodging system, just blocking or slow-ass jumping...i am pretty disappointed with this demo...

Just beat it, the Griffin battle was way funner than the Chimera.

Wow can you share those settings? Looks great!

hope this one is more skyrim or even dragon age (yeah.... not 2 hopefully) then it's monster hunter.... i want my stats to matter and my level to matter.. i want skill and abilities, i want spell and such, i don't want to spend time to just farm for craft run, dodge, dodge, square+square, dodge,etc...

Strider has a dodge.

Also didn't have any problem dodging, since I could pretty clearly see what the chimera was doing and dash out of the way in time. I prefer to try and parry, though. Like a boss.

Playing the prologue mission with just Salde is way more fun, I discovered a lot more about the Fighters abilities that way.

I didn't know if you pause after a light attack, and the combo, you will begin a new string that will end in a launch, not to mention it looks cool.

This game is pretty much exactly what I expected, so day one for me

God's had his chance.
I keep realizing i'm far past decision making on whether or not to grab this day 1 when i catch myself day dreaming about the possible "rare" special assassin class weapons.. maybe a pair of daggers that are actually more short swords? maybe a sword alone that is crazy perfect assassin style... dark black short blade made for wrecking faces... Really wish you could equip two swords on your person at one time. Still praying for berserk specific weapons... i want a wrist bolt launcher to compliment my deadly sword skills! lol ..

godamn this game is wicked. Finally had a match in the dark last night against the griffon (had to adjust the dark levels on the ps3 and in the game... quick question: where does everyone have their slider on the darkness scale in the game/?) ... bout half way through he takes off with me on him ... in the dark ... was insane. cutting away while he is trying to throw me off.. my mage tags him with some fire and my screen lit the hell up. First comment my wife actually made on the game so far ... "Wow. Well that was kind of cool... " :D

For those who have seen the trophy list (im not to avoid potential story spoilers), is there a trophy on there for beating the game in super hard mode or anything like that? That's assuming the game even has difficulty adjustments since im not sure it does..??

Just trying to gauge how hard of a platinum it would be.

There's no difficulty adjustments.

There is only one difficulty.

Playing both demos most gamers likely won't be bothered by either technical flaws but I will take minor frame dips over double screen tearing, besides that the game looks identical, just for me screen tearing gives me a headache why I avoided the early Assasin's Creed games on PS.

Did notice at least twice on chimera fight while climbing on the camera gets suck where you can't see character, not big deal though. Finally someone took fun SOTC elements and put it in another game. I think I will put my preorder for PS3 version on Amazon, just so many games coming out maybe should wait for price drop, still need to finish Witcher 2 EE.

Slicing down the parts of the chimera was pretty pretty fun. Action can get a bit too hectic though, high chance I'm getting this game.

I kind of like how hectic it can get though, I think it captures the intensity of fighting a ferocious beast better than other games.

I'm loving the cloudburst volley skill. It's fun to try and time it when the griffin is swooping down on you so that it gets caught in a hail of fiery arrows before reaching you. So satisfying to pull off.

There was a point in the demo that sold me on eventually trying this game:

The griffin was about to take off and then myself and two others pawns jumped on its back and got carried up in the air. We were hacking at it and just as the music swelled it came crashing back to the earth.

Hacking the Griffin down in mid flight never gets old.

I have done it so many times, and each time puts a big ol smile on my face.

Something else that is fun to do is making a heavy character that can weigh it down and prevent it from flying off, so your Pawns can unleash hell. The fact that they paid attention to little things like this will make this game so damn replayable.

It was a bit too much for me in the first part probably because the camera was going bonkers du to it taking place in confimed space. Way more manageable in the second part of the demo. Bringing the griffin down was super satisfying.

As for the difficulty questions, I looked at the trophy list and there might be a New Game + so there's that.

I also love how your warrior pawn can actually launch you to it if its in mid flight.

I mean, come on this game is one of a kind.

I don't see how anyone can pass this up.

You said it. As is usually the case for big, open world games like this, demos rarely do them justice because there is so much involved. However, in the case of this game, I feel it is even more so because of all the little variables that will easily get overlooked unless you play it, read about and look into it.

Even the combat, which many have described as "button mashing," is anything but. Sure, you can play it that way, but it is actually far more nuanced than that, with timed button presses and all of the abilities at your disposal. It is just a matter of learning how to play the game properly. If you button mash, it's your own fault, not the game's. As it is far deeper than that.

Really enjoyed this demo. The three pawns can be a bit overwhelming but I'm assuming they give you time to acclimate in the final game.

If this is Capcom flirting with the idea of a "westernized" Monster Hunter...it's a start and I will support it.

Still waiting for some kind of spectacularly foolish news around the release regarding optional pawns or quests DLC considering Capcom's track record of late BUT...so far I am cautiously optimistic about this game.

Also...I though the griffon was tough. : /

For some reason, the first few times I fought it it one shotted me.

There already has been DLC announced. 100 quests for $7. Don't know if its day 1 or not.

I don't know enough about the game...the XP progression, loot acquisition etc to know whether or not they are Capcoming us with that. : /

For some reason, the first few times I fought it it one shotted me.

It was super chaotic the first time I tried it. The griffon was pounding my pawns and I was missing with most of my arrows. Coupled with the...

"Shoot it's wings!"

"Kill it with fire!" shouts coming from the pawns.

There's a fair amount to absorb. I'm sold though. I'm not going to play the demo any more and simply wait for the game and hopefully they ease you into the chaos a little more smoothly.

Fighter is BOSS, just tried it a few times again and I think a shield parry on the chimera leap attack in its face (do it early instead of parrying it when it lands) seems to be an instant knock down, I think it was at 1/4 of its last bar though, most of the other time it just stuns it for like a second, you could parry majority of the big attacks too.

Also does block uses stamina? I haven't been paying attention to my stamina and I noticed when I tried to block the chimera 's huge attack, it broke through my shield a few times, then my character ran out of stamina and out of breath, don't remember how much stamina I had when I tried to block it, but I'm sure it was low.

Had a great moment in the countryside quest.

I was flinging fire arrows at it while it flew above me making contact with its wings every so often then it headed toward the sun, obstructing my aim.

I then noticed he had used the sun to conceal its change of direction and was barreling towards me. I never exited the bow aim and continued to shoot at it and at the last possible second as it soared just above me my last arrow caught its wing and he fell behind me engulfed. I pounced on its head and strong attacked him with my pawns as my mage tried to keep the fire going. It was awesome.
