Dragon's Dogma Demo Impressions

I like the concept, but it's not really much of a western Monster Hunter clone if we're talking about the big monsters - I really would've appreciated if the monsters had patterns or at least memorable attacks - it's all very 'generic' feeling at the moment, they just throw out a random attack every now and then. The SotC clinging onto monster is awesome though.

Also, massive letterboxes. Really? :/

I've seen people post in other threads that the letterboxes might be there in order to ensure stable performance, but i'm not sure how well that holds up, especially since I havent seen any real performance issues in other MT framework titles.

I really enjoyed the demo. I thought the Countryside Quest was a bit short, but I really like the controls and the feel of the combat. Day one for me.

Is there a way to stop those little cutscene interruptions when your pawns grab an enemy? It was really annoying me... just let me fucking play I don't care that you grabbed the dude and want me to stab him. Really takes you out of the action with the frequency it was happening during the prologue.

You can turn off the cinematic cut scenes in the options menu from the main demo menu.

Yes you can, thankfully the HUD is customizable as well. Lots of options which is always a good thing.

I wasn't really floored by what I played, but it's certainly on my radar. Combat cinematics, pawn subtites simply shouldn't exist.

And the character creator - candidate for the most evil witch noses ever compiled.

The Dogma demo just makes the game feel like a level based quest game, rather than a gigantic open world RPG.

That's what I felt, almost expected an end stage screen with number of kills and time taken etc. with another stage loading after.

Doesn't feel open world or RPG like.

Just found out by accident, and it may have been mentioned, but if you block just as the enemy's attack connects, there will be a flash of light and then you'll counterattack.

Going through it again and I'm warming up to it more but these controls are just sloppy compared to dark souls. I did the chimera with just me and 1 other guy and the fighting seemed really sloppy. Just lots of hacking and slashing with the occasional grab and then hack and slash some more until you get thrown off or fall off.

Also I can't tell you guys how many times I keep hitting R1 to swing my sword thanks to Dark Souls lol.

Holy shit. Day 1. I just hope there is some sort of crafting, enchanting, and exploring on my own. Like some other towns/ forts. This games seems to scratch an itch that I didn't get with amalur, skyrim. And I want loot!!!

After playing the demo it looks like i am waiting for a bargain bin price, not that it was terrible but it's nothing like i expected. I want the game but not for more than $19.99-24.99 which is a good thing since a ton of games are coming next month, just means i will be saving $60 next month.

I felt mislead by all the video and hype from places like destructloid, made it out to be this vast open world RPG and it's not, controls are pretty shitty as well.

Its supposed to be open world (or at least as open as Dark Souls i'm guessing), they just dont let you explore in the demo.

That was...kinda amazing. Some of the stuff that happened during that Griffon fight was insane. AI flinging AI (and I assume me if I had gotten there in time) through the air, my sorcerer resurrecting a dead troll to serve as bait which totally worked! Setting up a volley of arrows as the griffon swooped in, grabbing unto it's back as it is engulfed in flames and stabbing the shit out of it. Helps that I'm playing a dual daggers + bow character in Skyrim right now, but wow, that pretty much sold me on the game.

What? How did you get this from the demo?

I think there is crafting. The gryphon dropped something, not sure what it was the 2nd time I killed it. I really like the animations here.

I don't see how the demo gave you that conclusion. It's just the tutorial section and a boss fight.
It had no exploration elements, but that doesn't mean the game is a series of sectioned off boss fights and linear dungeons.
It's a bad 'demo' in that respect though for sure because it does not fully exhibit what the game has to offer.

It is an open world game. Look at the griffon fight, you're in a wide open field with a forest on one side and a castle-town in the distance. You can see how you could easily run up to there if the demo didn't restrict you.

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
Does anyone else kinda wish there was an optional C-C-C-C-COMBO METER to slap onto this game with medieval plays on the DMC grades?

Dreary! Capital! Bountiful! Allelujah! Stupendous! SSacriligious!!

Slightly disappointed by the demo, mainly by the fact that's so short. And it was a bit too easy and the battles just seemed a bit sloppy with the pawns all running around.

Nah. I'm terrible at that stuff. It's why I could never get into the DMC games.

^ Look like a Silent Hill reject.

How do you solo in the demo?

At the very beginning of the prologue quest grab your pawn and kick him toward the cliff behind you. Keep doing it until he goes over the edge. Later on, ignore the riftstone. The NPCs that join you for the chimera will run away and one will be killed during the cutscene. You'll be left alone to solo the chimera.

I mentioned this on the previous page, but this is capcoms fault for the way they made this demo. It's going to give alot of people the wrong impression about what type of game this really is. The poster just proves my point that alot of people will not walk away from this demo thinking it's an open world RPG, they will think it's a level based fantasy action game. Which is a shame because if you take the demo, in conjunction with the streams the demo will make you know if the controls feel right for you which is an important factor for people who already know alot about the game.

For people who are not following it though, this demo is going to do more harm than good I think.

Hadn't thought about this. Guess it's kind of odd to me to think about people playing this without some prior knowledge about the game.. at the very least that's it's a large RPG. It's plainly obvious that the game is a large open world... and to assume that it's a small arena style action game of some sort because of the demo feels... i dunno.. intentionally ignorant? Like you pop into the middle of the field with some goblins and a griffon to fight.. no story. No plot. No travel to get there. Just Bam... field... higher level character and some shit to kill... who loads up a demo .. sees that and says "Oh well the whole game must just be a series of these type of fights.."

like... seriously... who in the hell would think that? ... just weird.

I agree it was a really bad demo. I had to play it several times just to get a grasp on the mechanics and deal with how fast everything was going, especially if you had 3 pawns with you. Combine that with how much they talk and with how fast the enemies move and I was definitely suffering from a bit of sensory overload.

It should have been how kingdoms of amalur did it. Take the prologue dungeon and then after you get out give you 45 minutes to do whatever you want. Throwing us in at level 20 with a full set of gear and no tutorial is just begging to have mass confusion take place. Like in the prologue I was a warrior with a shield and then in the field my created guy is an assassin/archer and I had to stumble around trying to adapt to that and learn the new moves.

I still remain optimistic on the game and I think it'll be fun. I didn't notice any huge frame rate drops even out in the field and I thought it looked pretty good too, probably because of the lighting system (played on ps3).

Not a fan. Better button mapping would help A LOT, but as it is, I wouldn't buy it.

I didn't actually check if I could change the buttons. But capcom don't normally let you

Um, it IS an open world game. You didn't actually expect a demo that's under 2GB to allow you to explore the world, did you?

Played the demo, still day 1.

Same. The demo was a bit crap being to small in scope, had to play multiple times to get a good feel for the combat and everything else, but I think it's going to be an excellent game. Still my 2012 GotY frontrunner. Paying off my preorder next week.

It's really not that far fetched, its not like Dragons Dogma would be the first game with invisible walls barring you from all that scenery that "looks" like you can explore, but can't. Also, there is now skill based content in the demo, you can't mess with your class at all, you can't play as the mage for instance, you cannot pick your abilities or skills at all, and the first quest against the Chimera is very linear.

Alot of people play demos of games with no prior knowledge of the games exsistance. Kingdoms of Amalur is a perfect example of a recent game that no one bother to care about until the demo released. Then the flood gates opened and the game was everywhere, the demo thread on Gaf alone blew up. Yet many of the people in that thread stated that they had no prior knowledge or interest in the game.

I've said it before, and Derrick01 seems to agree that this demo should have been handled the same way the Reckoning demo was. Let players create their character, play through the tutorial quest, and then give them an hour or so of unrestricted playtime to do whatever they want. Mess with the Class system, explore the towns, talk to NPCs, go dungeon crawling, get a real feel for the combat other thank just fighting a few peons on the way to the big boss beast.

This demo funnels you through a cave in on quest scenario, and the second they pit you against a griffon within 5 minutes, giving you nothing else to do. They don't even have a trailer at the end showing and of the depth available in the full release. It just comes off that with the amount of rescourses Capcom has supposedly sunk into this game, they would have thought this demo out abit more carefully and made it meaningful. The demo sold me, but I already knew what the game was, this feels like the D&D game i've wanted all this gen, I just think the demo will leave some with a bad taste in their mouth. Hope i'm wrong though.

I just started up the PS3 demo, and the actual gameplay and combat is really fun.
It's too bad about that absolutely ridiculous framerate (in the griffon mission, haven't played the other) . It feels like the game is locked at 22fps, not to mention the muddy image quality (sub-hd?)

The invisible walls made me go wtf at first. But I know it's an open world game. Day fucking 1. Stryder is a badass.

REALLY wish the character creator had some sort of face/body code :(

As for not knowing the game is open world...eh..the game tells you "This is as far as you can go, buy the full game to actually play it" any time you get near the walls in the demo. If you can't figure it out from that, or the countless streams/previews...probably not the type of game for you.

God damn, tearing is horrible. I also hate how I can't change my default weapons for the created characters, I always end up with the knives and a long sword for my pawn.
I liked the game though.

I agree. This is a demo for the people who've been following the game already. It's for people who have been watching multiple videos and streams and just want a taste of the actual controls. Everyone else is kind of being thrown in to the deep end here (both on info for the game as well as the basic mechanics) and it is not a good way to sell to people wandering in.

My impression of the demo is that I really like the feel of the game. It plays just as I expected which gets me more hyped for release, BUT that's because I know just about everything there is to know about this game and I know what the demo is not showing (or doing a poor job of showing). I'm still day one.

TGO

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
It does looks generic as hell. Like an attempt by a japanese team at making a WRPG ... Oh wait.
I'm very impressed, how a Japanese dev can master the art of generic WRPG design is beyond me.
As for the demo, it seems a lot better then the usual games of this type but I won't be buying it, it's still the same'ol generic WRPG flare

For me I find it best when I have a good idea of what I'm trying to go for. Find something to work off of first, hair color/style, eyes, face structure, etc. then go from there.
