Dragon's Dogma Demo Impressions

Seeing them climb the bosses and shank them to death, while the mage is healing and magiking up a storm, while all constantly praising me and worrying about my stamina is like the ultimate RPG power fantasy. This game doesn't need co-op at all, I love the concept of pawns. In fact, I wish I could create all 3 of them.

I thought this was pretty cool. It makes it feel like they're real friends. Like real dependable allies on an MMO, but not an MMO.

Yeah the game works/looks so much better with most of the subtitles/health bars (for enemies) turned off. Dunno about mini map.

Yeah, it's weird to see that here just after coming off Xenoblade. The exact same mechanic is in that game, too, and it's pretty nice to have your allies help out. Xenoblade probably goes way more in-depth with the relationship stuff, though.

It's nice to feel like that's an option since bosses get visibly wounded like in Monster Hunter.

God's had his chance.
Last night i managed to time a jump just right on one of the Griffon's swoops past my party to grab his neck feathers and after a minute to stabilize got to cutting his with the fast attack special on the strider. Ended up catching him on fire and bringing him down to the waiting arms of my pawns to help me finish him off. Best part? My boy Prime calls out on our way down "I've learned a way to combat this beast!!" :D Fucking glorious...

Yeah, I tweeted Capcom yesterday asking about the issues and they haven't replied. I'm guessing they didn't fix them and are staying quiet about it.

Do they even respond to anything? I only see announcement and advertising tweets from them lol

just tried the demo, I don't know what to think of it yet. I kinda liked what I played but I don't think Im going to get the game right away, definitely not on my priority list.

Played the demo last night. Yup this is so awesome. Im glad the music is good we at least so far in the demo lol.

Also having me and my main pawn holding on to dear life while the griffon is trying to escape is ace. Love this game!

I enjoyed the demo. I didn't like the sudden transition to a support character doing some kind of attack while you're trying to fight a giant beast. It really threw me off when I was focusing on the monster and then it immediately cuts to someone yelling out some kind of attack or support. It also feels like there's way too much information on screen and coupled with the odd aspect ratio, it feels too cramped. Otherwise, I had fun with it and I am interested in this game.

Also, I must say how satisfying it is to grab one of your support characters and then throw them off a cliff or ledge.

Sadly, speed running Countryside Quest seems to boil down to having the mage enchant you, Triad Shot until the griffon burns down, dual blading its face to pieces with light slashes while your stamina recharges, and repeating. I think we're using a really overpowered, optimal setup for demonstration purposes, but, even with this strategy, the fight seems very dynamic each time I run through it thanks to continuously shifting battle parameters. The extra dash of fluidity (character responsiveness) and spice (skills and spells) over Monster Hunter is certainly welcome, too.

And I love, love, love the loading screen hints about using your ears at night. It creeps me out in the most exciting way possible.

Turn off "Cinematic Camera" in the options and that problem will go away. It's horrible--I'm so pissed it's turned on by default because it definitely rubbed me the wrong way. You can also tweak what UI elements you prefer to be visible if the cramping continues to bother you.

Yeah. It's annoying. It might be cool in SOME places. It just seemed to happen way too often. They had so much stuff cluttering the screen with the UI that I could see it being a deal breaker if you couldn't turn anything off. It's one thing to have your party constantly chatter (which is okay), but to have the same chatter appear on the left side of the screen and constantly scrolling. Just too much.

mt framework runs on soft vsync on 360 and you can even reduce tearing by reducing your console to 720p display.

as long as your tv is relatively new the scaler on the tv should be on par with the 360s. but remember this in no means makes the 360 version worse (historically outperforms on 360) because nearly all PS3 mt framework games dont even have a 1080p option and instead 720p as the maximum output.

Good lord the framerate on PS3 gets downright nasty.

If I get this game I'll probably go for 360 as I would rather have responsive controls. Plus getting the RE6 demo early is nice.

They're actually pretty helpful and aren't just dumb AI. It seemed like they were always doing something for a reason. And I like being able to command them some.
Seriously, all of my people seemed to play smart.

So much this.

Has it been confirmed that this is the same demo they were letting people play at E3 2011? Because looking at the footage from last year reveals that it's the same two scenarios and it looks basically the same as what we're all playing now.

I thought the game looked nice. I don't think it's great that I didn't really know what the hell was going on but still managed to muddle my way through easily. There were plenty of times where I just wandered around while the pawns did all the fighting.

At least these options exist.

Really?
Will have to try this out.

this demo has the date for release well month+year so this is probably a later build. its unlikely they had the date that well known nearly a year ago.

I did not know that, thanks.

Haven't played the demo but love how long the fights seem to take in videos. Can only get one game next month and am conflicted on whether to get this or Diablo 3...

My main character. Tried to make Solid Snake/ Naked Snake. I think he looks quite nice, especially in-game with daggers in both hands.

My pawn. Tried to make him look smug and easy going. I think I succeeded.

I don't understand how people can say framerate *dips* on PS3, because it's not.
BTW, very good IQ on my 46", no screen tearing, no aliasing at all (whereas i expected it all over the place), and the game is fantastic...

I nearly forget... best AI in a RPG ever.
Can't wait any longer for it to eat my life!

ppl are too quick to believe what they want to hear about performance. Wait until some comparisons I guess.

It's me, or... are we all blind or crazy?
I detect low framerate on DA:O (PS3 version) but not at all in DD's demo.
So what's the real consensus?

edit: maybe it's because of: 360 version's framerate > PS3 version's framerate?
But but but, framerate is maybe lower on PS3 without being a low framerate, am i right? :D

It seems to be consistently running at a lower framerate than 30fps, as soon as there are any kind of lighting, so it doesn't really affect gameplay much, I find it kind of jerky when the camera moves in the second scenario so I don't know what's the deal.

Okay so maybe i'm very tolerent about this, because i did think it's rock solid v-synced 30fps when i tested it last night.

I'm curious as to whether this demo has FXAA implemented or an older method. Whatever they're using now looks very nice!

Yes, i think with example like this, we can expect no aliasing nextgen.

I thought that the framerate was acceptable on PS3. And I play a lot at 60+ fps on my PC.

I think console owners should lower their expectations. With these graphics fidelity, you can't expect to run it like a ferrari.

Why are people hating on the character creator? I think it is great. Way easier to make good looking characters. (Better than Skyrim, Mass Effect off the top of my head)

The starting builds for males makes me laugh. Aside from the obvious Gutts, I see Frodo (or Patrick Klepek) and Kratos. One that looks like Vayne too, but that's probably not it.

First thing I did in the Prologue Quest is kill my pawn and then kill him and the others again when I summoned them by accident.

I hate this line of thought and generation so much. The demo dipped below 30FPS on several occassions, but I figured it must've been an old build and that wouldn't be the case for the full release. How have we gone from sacrificing 60FPS to have more special effects to sacrificing even more to stay in and around 30? Don't settle for less.

It's really not that big of a deal, seeing as it doesn't effect the pace of battles at all.

Then again, I don't know what your talking about when you say the framerate dips.

You're right! I played the PS3 version of the demo and the peformance wasn't detrimental to the several encounters throughout the demo, but you can't sit here and tell me or anyone else that the demo provided a smooth, consistent framerate. There were several occasions in the heat (and outside) of battle when the framerate would momentarily bog down or stutter, whether it be a poison mist spray here or a dragon breathing fire there, it wasn't truly consistent by any stretch of the imagination.

The point I was trying to reach with my last post is that there have been so many sacrifices to games over the course of this gen in order to reach a solid 30FPS, to excuse this or any other game because of how vast it is or how it looks is inexcusable.

I thought people liked the character creator. I thought they should've added more parameters like the one in dragon age instead of using a face template thing, but overall it's a pretty good creator and the strong point is definitely on being able to change body types, weight and height among other things.

It could use more hair variety, but it's better/as good as the ones in other RPGs.

you should consider that not everyone does notice any framedrops or tearing or other technical thingys... i for myself did not notice any of the above. not on 360 not on PS3... i don't count any pixels, i primarily play the games ... there is not much time to analyze ...

I'm sold on the game after playing the demo yesterday. Really enjoyed the combat and the pawns seem like they'll be extremely helpful. I'll admit that I wrote this game off as a missed opportunity because it didn't have co-op multiplayer. While multiplayer would still be awesome to have, the game isn't hindered by lack thereof by it in any way. World exploration looks fun, pawn system seems interesting and the combat is reminiscent of Monster Hunter. Can't wait for May 22nd.

This. PS3 version has a solid framerate. It might be lower than the 360's overall (30 vs. 24?), but there are no dips that I notice, not even when the dragon comes on the screen.

I'm wondering if I'm crazy, since so many people say there are so many dips in the framerate, lol. I don't notice it at all.

Really looking forward to a comparison to confirm my craziness.

DAY ONE 360. I don't care about a PC release now unless they confirm it before it's out (then I'll wait for it).

Aside from the screen tearing I love this.

I'm going through the same thing, I was set on Diablo but after the beta my expectations were lowered for it. Not that I'm saying it's bad by any means, just that it's some thing I can live just fine without.

I'm going with DD unless the reviews are overwhelmingly bad. I would love to support a new IP from Japan that's made for western gamers as long as the whole thing comes together.

jeez, i was reassured the fps would be consistent. i even preorderded.

It is very consistent. While it may not be locked at 30 FPS, it holds up fine. All these claims that it dips, chugs and gets nasty is totally untrue. Just watch footage of the demo on Youtube for confirmation if you can't be bothered to DL it. Furthermore, watch the hours of live and unfiltered footage of the PS3 version that they have streamed. What you see is what you get.

Yeah the mage guy in my group was healing everyone which saved me the hassle of going into the inventory a thousand times to use items on them and he seemed to always cast a fire spell on me at the right time so I could shoot fire arrows at the griffon.

Meanwhile my main pawn was always trying to launch me into the air when it was hovering above the ground so I could grab its tail and climb up top. I don't remember anything about the 3rd pawn though, he was probably a relatively useless bastard :p

Yup. In this game especially, it seems like every class is significant and helpful.

This sounds like me. If the game plays well I won't notice all the blemishes (unless it's pop in), especially if I am having fun.

I think I decided I will buy this game. After playing the demo which was a mix of really fun and bleh (tutorial area) I watched an OXM preview which sold me on the game.

It's just a shame Diablo 3 comes out about that time too.
