How is the Monk class shaping up? I'm thinking of making the class my new main, but reports about how they play are pretty scattered. Anyone here in the beta willing to give a basic rundown of the three specs?

There's still a ton of work and iteration left to do on all three specs before the class reaches a state that has its own unique identity. Right now it's a weird rogue/DK hybrid that doesn't quite know what it's doing with its resources or abilities in any spec.

I think the healing and tanking specs are reasonably along. Yeah abilities change drastically but the cores are there. DPS needs spice badly. It's fun just VERY easy and basic.

DK set is alright. Certainly better than some previous ones. You can always transmog now anyway, and it's probably advantageous to do so in a PvP situation, so that people can't size you up quickly via silhouette. They'd only be able to see health bars, and how quickly they're dying :D

Just throwing this out there, but what is everyone's favorite class / race lorewise?

My first two characters (night elf druid and human warlock) were the two that I kept going back to, but now as I think about jumping back in for a bit I'm reassessing my choices.

In Warcraft III, my favorite factions were the Undead and Night Elves, hands down, so I was really into NE lore during Vanilla. Since I also cared about how my character looked, I went with Alliance because I wanted something that looked good and orc females were just not for me.

I really enjoyed playing the druid class, harassing Horde in the Barrens and then running away in Cheetah form. Just a lot of fun in general. My warlock was a lot of fun as I liked RPing the character (since I'm on a RP/PVP server). I wasn't particularly drawn to human lore or aesthetics but I didn't want to play a gnome so that was all I had.

Played for a bit into BC, never leveled a character to max because I just played at my own pace. I'd play for a while, quit, come back during a new expansion, and then quit again after I'd had my fill. Along the way, something happened. I rolled an undead rogue and just fell in love with her. She had a great story behind her, a compelling faction, a lot of room for individual growth. The same with my Draenei Death Knight and my Worgen Warlock.

I don't know if I've changed as a person, but I guess the things I started looking for in my characters changed. Redemption, in the case of my Death Knight and Rogue, were very powerful themes that gave purpose and pathos to my characters. In general, I think the Forsaken are just well done - at least from what I've seen. No one wants anything to do with them. They're part of the Horde only because they have no place left to go. They can't go back to the lives they had, they can't enjoy the taste of food or drink, all emotional ties they've had with loved ones died with their past selves. Even so, they continue to exist and look for meaning in the world.

I'm probably going to start over so I can experience the Cataclysm content. I never made it to Northrend, but I'm worried that once the Arthas story arc is over, my rogue and death knight will feel pretty out of place. Finishing off Arthas, destroying the man that consigned them to their fate, will probably feel like a good place to retire those characters. Guess I'll go back and continue the Worgen after that.

Anyways, not sure where I'm going with this post. Started as something different and then I kind of went off on a tangent so I'll just get back to the question at hand -

What are your favorite races / classes lorewise? The characters, stories, plots that you care about? For me, coming back to the Undercity and Darnassus always feels like I'm coming home.

Races: Forsaken, Worgen, Night Elves ......... Dwarves, Gnomes, Goblins

Just don't like the whole cutesy angle that they were going for with the smaller races.

Classes: Druid, Death Knight, Warlock, Rogue

I'll always have a soft spot for Druid even though I don't really like the Tree Form, Bear Form, or Moonkin. Early druid content and lore just really stuck with me and the class always represented freedom and flexibility. I can't count how many people I've saved with a spare heal or emergency tank in bear form. I can't count how many times cat / cheetah form has saved my life. Also, a lot of great memories of seeing the world in cheetah form.

I've always liked rogues in RPGs. Just the idea of a man / woman who doesn't necessarily possess extraordinary strength, magic, or intelligence who survives on their wits and instincts. I mean, if you think about it, they have to compete with magic slinging mages, demon summoners, shapeshifters, elementalists, death knights and more with nothing more than their daggers and instincts.

So how about you?

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?
Raiding is so much fucking fun nowadays! It's kinda ridiculous how it went from RAGE to me loving this game again.

Troll Shaman. Even though in Warcraft III I was a Human player, I played Orc from time to time and absolutely loved the Hex Lord, Troll Witch Doctors and Orc Shaman. When I read over what the Shaman class had and the fact that I liked Trolls I knew I had to roll one - it was my very first Character and I still have that character putzing around at 85.

Now that I think about it, if I had went by the fact that I played Human in Warcraft III and my friends were Alliance I'd have ended up as either a Human Priest or Mage...

Troll druids, it just made sense, and I enjoyed their pre-cata event. Here's the story for those that don't know it:

Unknown to the loa priests, Zalazane was slowly cutting them off from the spirits. When they were powerless to stop Zalazane he started to take control of the Isles. Vol'jin, wanting to prevent more of his people from begin controlled, gave the order to flee the Echo Isles. Many trolls, including the loa priests, witch doctors, felt they had failed their people and took towards the untamed jungles of the southern islands. It was here that Zen'tabra had a vision. In this vision Zen'tabra saw the Emerald Dream and spoke to the ancient raptor loa, Gonk. Able to reach across and bring Zen'tabra's spirit to him, he tasked her and her people to save the life on the isles and revealed a new way to connect with all the spirits of nature, instead of serving just one at a time. Since then the once witch doctors were taught directly from the Emerald Dream and the spirits themselves. And although the spirits are not keen on teaching more of her kind, they will help so long as the Echo Isles continue to flourish with life.

Trolls and humans are the worst >.< and orcs, and tauren, and most of the races.

Gnomes > Worgen = Goblins > Draenei = blood elves >>>>> the rest.

I don't really follow the lore. I just enjoy the atmosphere of races.

I'm ready for new models so it's very weird to rank them.

I'm Horde and have all races because I have all 10 classes and I like the diversity.

I hate troll female and orc female tho.

So I'm leveling a BE priest on Tich but it's no my main server and the only thing the toon has for help is my old toon who I sent all gold and any useful supplies/mats. Only reason I have a toon on there was because I wanted to try horde and back in the day u couldn't make horde/alliance on the same PvP server. Now I'm wondering if it's worth bothering leveling my alt on Tich when I could just make an alt on my main server(KJ) and at least send heirlooms since they would make leveling so much easier.

I like the Tauren. In the beginning, I really wanted to play a Tauren, but didn't want to play Horde. They seemed like an honorable, just race and I always respected their leader Cairne. To be honest, I just wasn't as crazy about the starting area or the aptly named Barrens. They did have that cool spirit wolf quest though. I've grown to the like the Forsaken, but I went over that in my last post. The quest where I had to poison the Alliance member to turn him into a zombie almost put me off them, but I persevered. I WANT to like trolls, I just feel like they've been neglected the most - playing second fiddle to the orcs. I was willing to give the Blood Elves a shot, but they just didn't sink in. I think they were too cold for me to resonate with. I rolled a BE Paladin back when they came out, but lost the heart to keep playing her when I realized we were simply stealing the Light from M'uru which we were holding in captivity. I don't know, I think it felt like a form of rape to me and not something I wanted to role-play. (Probably over-thought the whole thing, but it turned me off the B.Elves.)

Cause Gnomes are awesome is why!

I've never understood their appeal. Then again, I was never really interested in learning more about them. What makes them so awesome?

I guess you're the best judge for that. I've never really understood the need to help any of my characters unless I couldn't afford to train them. If you're in a hurry to get to the end content, then putting your alts on your main server is probably the best bet. If you just want to see what live is like on the other side then just relax and take in the scenery on your way to the top. Seems like the game is easy enough that you wouldn't really need heirlooms to progress.

I'd probably level as the same faction as my main characters on my main server.

How much gold and what level was the other character?

Had a 65 tauren shammy and only like 100 something gold since I bought my epic mount when it was ludicrously expensive. I'm honestly surprised thinking back at how much work I put into the shammy when I was pretty much alone on the server besides the RL friends I had that played on there who I actually never played with lol. Also only reason I even have is help cuz I ressed my other acct and sent everything before the 7 day trial was over. Was worth it for that and getting an 80 worgen druid.

Back when I was playing, there weren't as many opportunities to solo raids / dungeons. I mean, we had druids soloing Mother Smolderweb; I think paladins and hunters were having some success at places.

How is it now? Just from what I've seen online, it looks like DK is probably the easiest route but can most classes solo higher ended content from BC and WotLC? Mostly looking at rogue, druid, or maybe warlock since those are the three classes I'm looking at rerolling.

As a Dk ive solod outdoor raid bosses (like the big fat whale in vash) also bloodmakes clearing dungeons for rep or what have you really easy and risk free.

I like DKs and am fully intending to go back and level one up eventually, but I want to experience the Cat content from the beginning first. :D I was playing Blood / Frost right before I quit last time and it was a lot of fun.

Yeah outside of that I dont have any experience other than with hunter! Pretty sure druid would be the best for solo stuff because of the heals and how your dps gear would be good in bear form or vice versa.

If you're only worried about soloing past 5 man content every class is capable.

Priests are shit for soloing. Having only a channeled AoE makes things suck. You can still easily solo 5 mans from vanilla/BC, but Wrath heroics are incredibly annoying and hard, much more so than on like a feral druid or a DK.

WEll, I mean obviously some classes do it more easily than others (I would argue priests are fine though), but the point was mostly the viability of it should have no bearing on your class selection assuming you'd like to do more than just solo with them, cause every class can.

Also holy shit I was wasted when I posted that list of raids...that was not meant to be up here in that early state -_- fml

Heh, that's a pretty good burn right there.

Yeah, I've heard Hunters, Paladins, and Druids are pretty good when it comes to soloing. Paladins just won't die from what I've seen. I was quite surprised to see just what a Hunter could solo.
Feels bad having to relearn everything coming back after a few years. I really wanna try doing SSC and The Eye now that I think I'm geared enough to do it.

You gonna do a list for BC raids? I'd like to see that.

Haha. Nice zinger by the blues. It really surprises me when people QQ so hard about beta content not being super stable. Maybe they should put some kind of disclaimer out there about beta testing and stability. Oh wait..

People had this expectation that "beta" meant "demo", so they're expecting far too much when thye log on to play it. It's safe to say that Blizzard learned their lesson and not to let the masses into the beta this early in its iterations.

I have an alternate theory that it's safe to say Blizzard didn't "learn their lesson" at all due to the fact that they got 1.2 million people to commit to year long subscriptions during a period in which they have no new content in the pipeline at all.

There really isn't that much more whining proportionally than any other WoW beta and none of the people who are whining about it have the power to quit anyways. It's not like their other betas are filled with professional bug testers as opposed to "the masses."

Its sad when players has to make a fixed exe for people to use to keep the beta from crashing. smh.

More like it's an alpha, amirite?!

I guess I'm in the minority of just reporting a bug when I run into it rather than jumping to the forums and complaining that it doesn't meet X standard.

This is a more unpolished beta than their other ones though, if people who've done all of them are to be believed.

I'd imagine there are going to be more bugs because you have existing tech with new features added to it. Sometimes you hope it works and it -does- work on a small scale but then you let in a ton of people and that's when it turns from Jekyll to Hyde. The WoW Jenga code tower is how high at this point? I don't expect it to collapse completely... but the higher it gets, the more I expect some pieces to drop off. 'Specially if they keeps adding features people want. While not all of the unwashed masses may be capable of writing proper bugs, they're still invaluable to the backend to see how the general population will behave.

Account-wide achievement support is in the lates beta patch according to MMO-Champ. Which is great. It's even better if it applies to Feats of Strength as well, and if it awards achievement mounts (as account-wide mounts aren't in yet it seems, though pets are.)

Somebody let me know the details if you're in the beta and can test it!

It does apply to Feats of Strength as well. Unfortunately they don't give you the mounts and titles from the achievements that have those right now. Not sure if that's intended but it would be nice if they did that.
