... and I have the set up for the 4th movie.

*end of third movie*

Kirk: Khhhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaannnnnnnnnnnnnnn!!!!!

*spocks body ejected from torpedo tube, lands on Genesis planet*

:Cut to Black:

Nah see by revisiting Space Seed they can totally alter Khan and how things happened rather than dealing with Wrath of Khan storyline

They should avoid Khan all together. There's ton of other great stuff to use if they're going to mine plots from TOS.

Not to mention Abrams would never have the guts to do what Star Trek II did and never have the Protagonist and Antagonist meet.

How does a regular guy getting magic powers make sense for a Star Trek movie?

Personally I agree that it doesn't make sense for a MAINSTREAM Star Trek film. The things they'd have to do to make this work for 2 hours arent likely to keep the average audience engaged. However a Harry Mudd engagement and the Orion pirate cartels holds a fair amount of room for the "pew pew" lasers that a mainstream film would need for the box.

I hope "I dropped my phazer" becomes a running gag in this series of movies

You know, I never really paid attention to that aspect. Wow.
They did it in "Balance of Terror" too

XI kinda stomps all over the things that made the episode canonically relevant, however :p

I just saw Chris Pine in Bottle Shock (2008) on Netflix. He played sort of a hippie dude who worked in his father's Napa Valley vineyard in 1976. His Bo Barrett was a likeable character, but a bit too much of a smirking smart ass for his own good. You got the impression that if he ever grew up a little and took things more seriously, he could really accomplish something (which he eventually did.)

Watching this movie I couldn't help but think that JJ Abrams direction to Pine in Star Trek must have been, "Play that exact same guy you played in Bottle Shock, but with a short haircut and a Starfleet uniform."

Wrath of Khan worked because there was a history between Khan and Kirk with Khan stewing in hatred in exile for ~20 years.

Everyone needs to realize it couldn't be a re-telling of Star Trek II, it'd be a re-telling of Space Seed, which while a good episode it isn't exactly a slam-dunk premise (smart guy takes over the Enterprise...)

:lol For a second there I thought that was just a photoshop of him wearing an Iron Man suit. I hope this movie turns out to be more than just a decent popcorn flick.

I want Trek back on TV :(

Does anyone knowledgeable about Star Trek IP rights think it would be possible for HBO to make a go at it?

Viacom is Paramount's parent company. If there was to be a premium cable version, it would go to Showtime. Not that we'll see another Trek series any time soon though.

It's owned by CBS/Paramont. And there won't be any for a long time. JJ Abrams is running the franchise now (and Paramount is very happy about that) and Abrams said no Trek on TV at least for a while. He doesn't want the brand to get bloated like it was in the 90's. He said it will remain just a movie franchise for now.

The franchise is Abrams baby and will be for a long time after how huge Trek '09 was. Pining for the days of Brannon & Braga running the franchise are futile ;).

Same. Sci-fi is dead on TV now. :'(

There was word someone was trying to green light a series set after Voyager but news since.

No chance anything will ever happen in the old timeline. That part of the franchise crashed and burned into the ground. There was huge decline in ratings post-TNG starting with DS9 and cratering to nothing with ENT. Nemesis bombing sealed it's fate. It'd be like making a direct sequel to Batman & Robin these days. It's new timeline or nothing. Even then I wouldn't expect a new series for at least 10 years.

There's 0 chance a new Star Trek series will be anything other than a trainwreck.

There is 0 chance we will get one for literally years and years. People need to give up on that. Sci-Fi on TV just doesn't do well anymore, especially hard sci-fi like Star Trek. No studio will touch that genre. Not to mention Abrams said no.

I hope they continue to develop the troubles Kirk has. I would love for the setup of this movie to start with Kirk in the brig having lost his command again due to something he did.
I like that aspect of the character. Always in trouble but always saving the day despite the trouble it gets him into. It lent something to the Original Series, and to the official movies that I never found in Next Generation.

Do we know anything about Cumberbatch's character, other than being the villain? Looks like he's not wearing any prosthetics/makeup but the dude looks like an alien anyways.

I haven't read anything. But he is beating up Spock-Ninja so he can't be all bad.

I have faith that this interpretation is going to be wildly different from anything that came before re: Khan, and Cumberbatch is a total boss.

I am cautiously optimistic.

Also they totally have an out for denying that it's "Khan" over the past couple of years, it won't be "Khan" as we know him.

Not really an excuse, I know, but I can see why they've been so cagey about it.

Why? If he's the villain, he's going to be all over the marketing and trailers pre-release any way.

They are some neat places they can take it and they can totally play with our expectations, but the writing team is urghhhhhh.

EDIT 2: Nice av btw.
I think theyre going to go a completely different direction than what fans are expecting. New universe and all that. If they just follow the same plot lines then there really isn't any point to have this alternate timeline.

And thank you. How's life in the future?
