lightweight cotton pants are awesome during the summer, and cotton/linen blends are better and kind of reduce the linen 'crinkle' that develops.

avoid blends with a lot of viscose/rayon, though it is great for breathability it tends to show every little bump in the fabric (like pockets and/or underwear lines).

depends on what how much you want to spend and if your goal in "lighter" clothing is more in materials or a combination of material and color.

i've only recently began toying with the notion of adding actual spring/summer colors to my wardrobe. I too live in so cal and you can pretty much wear whatever the fuck you want here without much notice. just take a peak online at the front pages for some retailers. they'll usually show some nice combos of styles for the season. this should give you some idea about colors and different styles.

I'm really just looking for clothing that will help keep me cool, temperature wise. I've typically stuck to darker colors in the past, but I'm definitely looking forward to experimenting with colors, clothing, and shoes that I've never worn before. It wasn't until last year that I started wearing white in an informal context, and it's been wonderful.

Thanks for the tips. The types of fabrics used in clothing is something that I only tangentially paid attention to until recently, so this kind of thing helps a lot.

IMO black shoes aren't that great.

I have a very nice pair. They go with my suits and that's about it. In a pinch they look OK with a business casual setup, but they're no good with jeans. Brown is the way to go with nice shoes. More versatile.

Every man needs a nice pair of black shoes in a reserved style, but maybe that should be the 2nd or 3rd nice pair.

topman is God for slim fit clothing! Need a pair of shiny black work shoes though, recommendations? I'm not sure what style to go for, but it needs to match everything :p

You'll need to go black and you'll need lace ups.

Cole Haan Air Adams Oxford. You can dress it up or down and it's comfy. You can get apron, or split toes on these. They look much better in person than any pics I can find on the net.

If you're going to be moving around and on your feet a lot, ECCO is a great choice. They look dressy but wear like trainers. You probably won't want to wear these with a suit though. The Cole Haans will work with anything.

It's for work though, I wouldn't use it for casual outfits. I've got some dark brown slip ons that are good for both, but are a totally different style. I don't really wear jeans any more so I guess it won't be too much of a problem!

Bold ass shoe for work, assuming normal office attire is what most people wear.

those are a bit* on the pointy side

*by bit I mean a lot

Might be the lighting, but that is way too elongated and pointy.

Thanks for the comments, it won't be a problem at work. I do work for a large automotive firm in product development where it's not exactly the metropolis for fashion, but dress code is oddly relaxed. No need for ties, top buttons, sleeves down kinda thing.

Here's a better photo...

They're really flat, which is why they look so pointy. I might get it for casual wear any way! I'm infatuated with them.

The flatness at the ends is not attractive to me. I don't think that's a timeless style.

But hey, it doesn't sound like you can be convinced. You could do much worse.

They're great looking shoes, but you had better have equally bold clothes to go with them. A pair of chinos isn't going to cut it.

EDIT: lol. Crap.

OK...suggestions for comfortable walking shoes? My feet are pretty bad so they need good support. Want to avoid looking *too* out of place in Eastern Europe :p

Looking for a watch.. would like to keep it around $300.

I like leather bands and a minimalist dial. Any pointers?

Why is it so hard to purchase a slim summer jacket for men. Jesus christ.

I just want a simple, sporty jacket that goes well over a button down shirt with slim fit jeans/chinos. Shouldn't be this hard, but most stores around here simply fill their racks with blazer after blazer.

Welcome to my pain.i think I've found a nice lightweight cotton thing, hopefully it fits, since there is only one or them.

Alright just came back from HK/Paris/London and here are some of my pickups:

Gucci belt. Only use one at a time so it might as well be decent.

Nike sneakers from Hong Kong.

Sweet pickups! Well, everything but the Chuck Taylors, God I hate those shoes. Congrats on the Burberry trench, seems like a real steal!

To be honest I wasn't crazy about the belt, the buckle is a tard gaudy for my tastes. I needed something pretty quickly for a wedding so I settled.

What's a good, nice, affordable messenger bag? I don't have much money, and I would like one for next semester at school. I'm thinking $30 - $50. I want it to be pretty casual, just using it for school.

So, I need lessons on khakis. Basically, I wear khakis and a polo 2 days a week to work. I have brown shoes, socks, and a brown belt. Do all 3 need to be the same color brown? Socks should match the pants right?

Also, what are some good brown shoes that go with khakis and polos?

My current watch. It looks a lot darker in person. It's a really hard to photograph, so pictures don't do it justice. I've gotten more comments on it then I've had any other watch. It's very non-traditional which I love.

Anyone know much about the Junghan Max Bill Automatic watches? Anyone own one? I'm taken by its minimalist design but my goodness at that price tag. $900! I'm the type of person who might spend a little more on an item if I really like it, but I usually applied that principle to a pair of shoes or sunglasses, not a watch and certainly not at this price level. I don't think I've worn a watch in 16 years. But it sure looks nice and it would offer something new to my usual wardrobe.

Watches are generally one of the most expensive pieces of clothing/accessory, depending on what you're looking for. The price range is extremely broad. If you're only going to have one watch then you might as well spend a bit more and get something you really like. Then again, you're not a watcher wearer (I'm generally not either) so really it boils down to you. $900 is a lot of money to some people as well, but in the world of decent watches it's not much at all.

Thanks for the perspective leng, you're right the world of watches is completely foreign to me. As I read bits and pieces about watches, I'm learning about the value placed on mechanical watches as opposed to quartz -- a few comments I've read are adamant about never purchasing a quartz watch above $50. Despite quartz being more accurate in keeping time, these fellows value the larger complexity of a mechanical watch over time accuracy. Interesting stuff, I'm beginning to understand why good watches cost a lot.

My main issue with expensive watches is that I'm anal about defects and scratches so I'd never be completely comfortable with wearing a watch worth over $1000 (unless of course I turn into a millionaire and that amount money becomes poo change).

There are actually plenty of nice watches in the $300-$800 range if you look at the right brands. For example, Seiko.

Anyone know where I can get a military style jacket like this? I've been looking for about a month and all I can find is wool and leather. The brand in the picture is Zara.

I got a similar one from Urban Planet two years ago. Of course, since I'm a dumbass, it turned out it was a size to small and I didn't try it on the store (eyeballing things is a terrible idea when it comes to clothes). It doesn't have those epaulets though.

automatic watches are very nice. I simply love and cherish my Omega Seamaster. I actually quite like the look of the watch you posted, for the same reasons. I like wearing watches though and wouldn't mind spending a lot on a very nice quality piece.

With that said, you can find nice watches, even automatics, for cheaper than the $900 of that watch. It will definitely boil down to aesthetics, cost and overall quality. i do think if you want to step up your game as you seem to have interest in a watch, a nice piece will catch the eye of people always. In the 12 years I've owned my Seamaster I've gotten countless compliments on it from strangers. Watches such as fossils and other cheaper brands, while shallow to say, simply can never hold a candle to a more finely crafted piece and will barely add to your overall ensemble.
