I usually always choose the Primary Pokemon versions, with the exception of Soul Silver, because I originally had Gold back then and I wanted to try the Silver version for once.

I think people just pick the Secondaries to be different.

i pick the version that appeals to most to play through as my "main" game, though i buy both versions.

blue>red because i prefer blastoise and the color blue

silver>gold because i prefer silver and lugia

sapphire>ruby because i prefer the color blue and kyogre is amazing

pearl>diamond because i prefer pink to blue and loooooove palkia

black>white because i told myself i'd buy whatever version had reshiram

Blue, Gold, Ruby, Diamond, HeartGold, White.
But then again I end up buying the other version and the third games too so it doesn't really make a difference in the end :p

And yeah, they're usually based on the version exclusives to begin with, even though that ends up being irrelevant.

I just pick the version with the cooler cover. Diamond, SoulSilver, White.

I don't even check the version exclusives since one of my friends always has the other version so I can just take the other Pokemon from them

I honestly don't get how people like Sandslash. Easily one of the worst Ground-types in the entire series.

I'll have you know that I loved using Sandslash in Blue. I had a great one that swept up in competitive battles amongst my group. It must have been in the top percentage of Sandslash.

Edit: I always pick the secondary version. Never felt conflicted about it as I was always getting the better cover/version (though I THINK Kyogre took a little bit for me to warm up on.)

I got Red version as a gift, so I didn't have a choice. Chose Squirtle anyways.
I got Gold version because my brother got Silver.
I got Sapphire version because my brother got Ruby.
I got Leaf Green version because my brother got Fire Red.
I got Pearl version because my brother got Diamond.
I got Heart Gold version because my brother got Soul Silver.
I got Black version because my brother got White.

I've never been one to care what's on the box.

If I trade a (for example) Blastoise to a game that doesn't have a Squirtle, Wartotle or Blastoise in its pokedex, will it gain all three stages of evolution its pokedex, or just the Blastoise?

Butterfree > Beedrill
Arbok > Sandslash (though Sandslash has a kewl design, I practically never used him.)
Primeape >>>>>>>> Persian
Arcanine > Ninetales (*summons UltimateIke*)
Victreebel > Vileplume (Victreebel was a total bro on my SS team. I didn't use him in RBY, though.)
Electabuzz > Magmar (The entire line.)
Scyther > Pinsir (Pinsir hardly gets any love :( )

Haha, yes!

I got Blue version when I was a kid. I want to replay it once before the battery dies forever...

Silver, Ruby, Fire Red, Pearl, HeartGold, Black is the following trend. Getting Black 2.

So since Red won the battle against Blue...

GOLD VS. SILVER
01. Primape Vs Persian
02. Arcanine Vs Ninetails
03. Ariados Vs Ledian
04. Ursaring Vs Donphan
05. Mantine Vs Skarmory
06. Ho-Oh Vs Lugia

Edit: Urasing and Donphan switched in the Japanese Versions

they switch what version they are exclusive to between japanese & international versions, for some reason. it was switched back in hgss.

Yeah, just looked it up, confusing.

Anyway my picks are: Persian, Ninetails, Ledian, Urasing, Skarmory, and HoOh. Giving Silver the win.

Mantine is basically the child of Gyarados and Skarmory.

GOLD VS. SILVER
01. Primape Vs Persian
02. Arcanine Vs Ninetails
03. Ariados Vs Ledian
04. Ursaring Vs Donphan (I can't decide! I've been here for like 10 minutes trying to choose)
05. Mantine Vs Skarmory
06. Ho-Oh Vs Lugia

so Gold wins, plus you know, Primeape is worth like triple points.

Your decision was made even easier in HGSS. Because Heart Gold and Soul Silver got Ursaring and Donphan switched (Donphan is now in HG, and Ursaring in SS).

You know , these posts have made it clear how little i've actually cared about version exclusives other than the main legendary. Maybe its because i always ended up buying both versions anyways...

Primape > Persian
Arcanine > Ninetales
Ariados > Ledian
Ursaring > Donphan
Skarmory > Mantine
Lugia > Ho-oh

So in the case of exclusives, it's a tie. Oh wait no, Gold won out.

Nine. Tales.

Man, the English name for the anime's Donamite tournament is laaaaaaaame ಠ_ಠ

What was wrong with the Japanese name? Why do the dubbers feel compelled to surgically remove all of the good puns and replace them with things that make no gorram sense?

*sigh* I guess that's one of the drawbacks of being dubbed by TPCi. Better translation, worse jokes.

GOLD VS. SILVER

01. Primape Vs Persian
02. Arcanine Vs Ninetails
03. Ariados Vs Ledian Ledian is better than Ariados, but Spinarak is better than Ledyba.
04. Ursaring Vs Donphan
05. Mantine Vs Skarmory
06. Ho-Oh Vs Lugia

Silver wins, even though I love my Growlithes.

So is it time to move onto the battle of Ruby vs Sapphire? Well i'm doing it, that's just the kind of reckless and impatient man I am.

Shiftry Vs Ludicolo (Dancing mexican pineapple duck thing is pretty awesome but the Tengu tree man just about edges this one, I'd probably like Ludicolo more if it weren't for Miror B and his rain dish team)
Mawile Vs Sableye (Mawile is oddly adorable, Sableye...is also oddly adorable? Well damn I just like Mawile more, these two need evos!)
Zangoose Vs Seviper (Arbok is the only poison snake I need)
Solrock Vs Lunatone (Solrock has those shifty eyes, Lunatone has the beak face, the sun rocks visual hilarity wins out)
Groudon Vs Kyogre (Best cover legends, despite the inflatable Kyorge I got with Ruby trying to tempt me otherwise Groudon is my man)

It's a Ruby version knockout for me.

Shiftry vs. Ludicolo: Shiftry (Dark type with Extrasensory FTW!)
Mawile vs. Sableye: Sableye (Both are adorable, but Sableye gets the edge due to his epic DW ability)
Zangoose vs. Seviper: Zangoose (Both have meh movepools and stats, but Zangoose's Crush Claw and cool design make it the winner)
Lunatone vs. Solrock: Lunatone (I have a grudge against Solrock due to an extremely lucky one killing my Crawdaunt in a Nuzlocke run with its flinch and crithaxx)
Kyogre vs. Groudon: Kyogre (Easy. Better ability, better moveset, better design, better inspiration, better lore. Clean sweep.)

I legitimately like the secondaries better. Not because I'm a hipster.

Silver wins. Just wish Ariados was in Silver. I really like it's design.

Shiftry Vs Ludicolo
Mawile Vs Sableye
Zangoose Vs Seviper Easily one of my fav gen 3 pokes.
Solrock Vs Lunatone
Groudon Vs Kyogre

It's a Ruby version knockout for me.

Sapphire barely gets it. Only because I love all the gen 3 exclusives. Except Groudon. I hate it.

Superior Silver is Superior

Ruby vs Sapphire?

Shiftry Vs Ludicolo
Mawile Vs Sableye
Zangoose Vs Seviper
Solrock Vs Lunatone
Groudon Vs Kyogre (is this even questionable?)

Sapphire

So how did that work out for you before the GTS came about?

I was always up for trades and have friends who were willing, but their selection of Pokemon always sucked.

Why do you think it took until SS for me to get a completed Pokedex? :p

RUBY vs SAPPHIRE

Shiftry Vs Ludicolo
Ludicolo because Shiftry is trying too hard to be bad ass.
Mawile Vs Sableye
Both kinda flop, but Mawile is steel, so yeah.
Zangoose Vs Seviper
Seviper is pretty awesome, but Zangoose is way too cool. One of my favorite non-evolvers.
Solrock Vs Lunatone
Neither, but if I had to pick, Lunatone.
Groudon Vs Kyogre
Definitely Kyogre. Water legendary is awesome, and he's not some angry generic monster.

Looking back, I really liked Gen III's locales and stuff, but a lot of the designs were pretty lackluster. =/

Ruby vs Sapphire

Shiftry Vs Ludicolo - Mexican/duck/pinapple thing vs Samurai tree. it just wasn't fair.
Mawile Vs Sableye - Sableye doesn't do anything for me, while Mawile is beyond adorable.
Zangoose Vs Seviper - Seviper > Arbok though.
Solrock Vs Lunatone - Sun > moon. simples.
Groudon Vs Kyogre - Kyogre's cool, but there's no beating the GOAT.

The king has spoken.
