Instead, lazy third parties gave us Wii games like this:

Okay.. blood is boiling here.

And then they have the nerve.. the unbridled gall to whine about their sales? And they wonder why we (Nintendo console owners) don't trust em? Really?

Grrr..

I don't understand why Reggie would constantly re-iterate that the '1080p box has been ticked' if the system was incapable of running launch titles in that resolution.
it's a buzzword! And he is talking shit.

Also I bet some games will end up being 1080p like animal crossing, possibly NSMB, basically the simple titles. But all the bigger ones, don't count on it.

Even considering the Zelda demo, which was 1080p?
That was 1080p? I'd assumed it was 720p, based on the pictures for NSMBM...

I hope this is indicative of what Nintendo games are going to look like. 1080p is ♥.

And they pledged strong support of the Wii, as well. Like that old saying goes: "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, surely the launch fps is going to be great this time. Hype! HYYYYYPE!!!"

;)
For that matter, their 3DS showings weren't that hot, either. Rayman 3D is a very subpar port of the Dreamcast version. Certainly still playable and fun, but there's no reason for the sound issues, for the odd lighting issues, for botching up the secret
1000th Lum
, the framerate issues, the skybox issues... That Tom Clancy SRPG was pretty good, I hear, but it was using DS assets and was hardly a looker.

goddamn when will this misery end?

I cannot wait for this to be over... I know we should set our expectations low but sheeesh this is depressing serious guys. Can't you post some good hype?

Because as president of NOA Reggie is more interested in boasting about what is possible than being a Debbie Downer and talking to the press about the realities of launch ports not taking advantage of all those possibilities.

At this point i'm pretty much accepting the fact that WiiU games will be 720p/30, with probably less polys than some of the most resourceful PS3 games.

I know most of you are optimistic, but it would just be the perfect pattern compared to their past console. Always a little less than what people expected.

BUT, art will be great and some games will wow us and create some excitement. Maybe it will even seduce some guys who didn't buy a Nintendo console for a while, if some games are badass. But it will totally fail at convincing guys who play on PS360 that they could taste the next gen 1 year early with the WiiU.

I can just see it from there really.

Could they though, do you think?

Well, actually. I guess we don't know yet.

1080p might not be achieved based on the game (and yes, because of performance), but games should start being designed with 1080p and 60 fps in mind.

The pad will probably display but not actually be optimal for 1080p; it wouldn't make much sense to use more power and not see it.

He said it to get Geoff Keighley to stop asking him. It's moot since people (and not Nintendo) will just keep making unrealistic demands

Well, the Wii U trademarks should be published for opposition tomorrow in the Official Gazette of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. This brings the name, unless it is met by opposition that is, one step closer to being what the system will actually bear. I'm not sure really if this constitutes as good hype, but with the name established prior to E3 Nintendo at least won't spend several minutes of the media briefing explaining any new name. And that leaves more opportunities for new games to be shown.

I'm sure NSMBWii2 will be 1080p.
You'd think so, but they seriously used 720p screenshots to represent it - with very noticeable aliasing. I suppose you could argue that it was a tech demo hastily scrapped together from NSMBWii assets to show off at E3 and thus not even remotely optimized, but you could just as easily argue the opposite, really...

It's kind of mind-boggling, really. I mean, this is a game that by-and-large uses 2D assets, with some 3D flair here and there (notably player characters). This shouldn't really be taxing on any modern system.

On a system fifty times the performance of an Xbox 360, developers can opt to run their games at 720p with details and effects not possible at 1080p. Reggie was basically saying "Our system will be capable of full HD".

For what it's worth, the final set of system target details was likely a moving target at the time, so that's all he could probably legitimately say then and there. "We'll have 1920x1080 resolution support, there will be an online system that third parties will have a strong armhand in, beyond that it's question mark blocks.

Nintendo games - in HD.
A jump all the way from GameCube past the 360.
The crazy idea that some of us will need to buy new TVs to catch-up with Nintendo..

YUM!
(does that help any?)

I don't even think he knows the technical stuff about 1080p. He's just a business guy in a suit. Media asked him if Wii U is more powerful than current consoles, and he would just reply back with "It's 1080p. Check the box".

I can dig your post from pages ago saying the exact same things...
What facts are you talking about?

I don't see why anyone would want to oppose such an awful name so they can use it themselves :3

What I want is a full FCC release with good bits of info about final hardware being tested but that is like what 5 months away?

Yeah. The lack of anti-aliasing is most noticable in 2011_SW01_5_scrn05_E3.bmp: http://media.nintendo.com/pressroom/E32011/WiiU/WiiU_Software.zip

Why even supply those screens in the first place, at least in 720p? Doesn't seem to be too difficult to get running in 1080p. Even The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword saw some official screens in way better resolution than natively "possible" on Wii, why supply such low-res screens for a console you've labeled 1080p compliant.

I remember when some people would use Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay on Xbox 1 as the goal post for Wii launch games.

Maybe it's jut me, but I thought the majority of third party games on Wii actually looked WORSE than third party games on Gamecube even, which is crazy to think about.

I thought open world type games like Tony Hawk on Gamecube looked good, shooters like Timesplitters 2 looked good, then you had Resident Evil and Resident Evil 4, and stuff like Soul Caliber 2.

Then you look at the Wii and you have stuff like that, Need For Speed games looked like dog crap, etc.

Logically, this makes no sense as to why this would happen, but thinking about it, all the new games were low budget PS2 to Wii versions of the "major franchises" with no care or effort put into the games compared to the 360/PS3 versions.

I've come to the conclusion that anticipating E3 affects the passage of time and that if one wanted to live forever they would simply delay E3 one day at a time, slowing the passing of time to a crawl. However, there is the possibility that the potentially deadly side effects of too much hype increases exponentially the longer it takes for E3 to arrive, so I don't know if slowing time wouldn't kill you, anyway.

u low balled my expectations
Awww.. damn. My hope was to point-out that a worst-case scenario isn't bad at all.

Personally, I'm still sticking with the position that it'll be 2.5-to-3 times more powerful than the 360. 360 games to begin with are already scrumtrulescent-looking, and we'll get the added entertainment of gaming media dimwits claiming with straight faces that the PS4's graphics will blow the U's out of the water.. when in reality, the differences are going to look more and more subtle over time. The comedic entertainment value will be sublime, muahahaha!

"While we realize that the Wii U can do 1080p now, if you sit two feet away from the TV and pause at the 35-second mark, you'll see that the rendering of the trees is slightly better on the PS4 version. Thus, because of differences like this, we cannot in good conscience recommend the Wii U version."

It doesn't seem out of the question. There have been 1080p PS360 games for a long time, though they're definitely in the minority. Wii U being more capable, whether it's by 30% or 200%, should have an easier time of it.

Can you imagine a Majora's Mask parallel timeline where a banned member returns to GAF where E3 'never happened'?

It'd be like the New Londo Ruins in forum form.

Yet plenty of the chums over here have played the games, if anything Mother 4 could be made with only loose story based connections to the prequels. Rename the EU version to 'Starside' or some shit, and off you go!

That would depend on your definition of plenty, & it was never a particularly requested game (The Final Fantasies & CT were the games that people wanted, Earthbound never really came up).

I love how there is no concessions to your optimism :)
Anyway if Nintendo delivers more than what i'm waiting for i'll be pleased and impressed!

By all means be massively negative in order to guard against being disappointed. But you shouldn't mistake that for realism or mistake informed opinion for optimism.

Trials Evolution, Diablo 3, Peace Walker, Xenoblade - these will keep me busy until E3! It ain't that much anymore.. remember January? Or February? The wait killed us. :)

Oh so we know exactly what will be the graphical power of the WiiU, regarding what it'll have to do with the second screen and what will be the os and features of the console, my bad.
