Van Persie scores twice and still manages to be shit in the Dutch team. He's a bit like Seedorf, an excellent player who just cant function well in the national team.

They can't all play on the level of this demigod.

And as I am writing this Demirel is catching Ronaldo's penalty. He's still better than the Portuguese keeper.

Volkan's earning his dinner tonight. Portugal is keeping him very busy. Liking what i'm seeing with Hassan Ali Kaldirim and Sercan Serarar. Shame Tunay didn't get more play.

What exactly made you lose hope in the first place?
Except for the last to friendlies, the latest matches weren't that good. Add that we're probably not going to beat the Germans and the WC2006 match against Portugal still gives me nightmares. Not very confident on leaving the group stage in one piece.

Northern Ireland did not pose much of a threat (or even resistance) though.
Correct but I'm watching Portugal - Turkey right now and Portugal does not seem that solid.

Yeah, nu.nl put it something like this:
It appeared that the Northern Irish thought the match was an inconvenient interruption of their party weekend in Amsterdam

It was obviously a much better game to watch than the dreadful duels against Bulgaria and Slovakia, but I'm not exactly confident in our chances to make it out of the group stage.

Wow... the negativity about the Dutch team in this thread is overwhelming :(

I still believe that they will come out 2nd in the group stage and possibly make it all the way to the final. But realistically that group is a minetrap. All four teams could qualify and it all depends on the day.

English players are dropping like flies.

"We lost because we had key players missing". Having said that, Cahill is arguably the biggest loss so far. Despite that, England do have Phil Jones and Jolean Lescott who can partner Terry in the central of defence.

I don't really see the point of playing these friendlies just a week or so before the tournament begins.

I actually found out today that one of the players for the Netherlands (Luuk de Jong) used to be a classmate of mine.

Really blew my mind. That guy made it big!

I don't think Denmark has a big chance. It's a bad group to end up against Germany, Portugal and Holland.

I miss some class from the danish players. I don't think they are the great humble heroes they were 10 years ago. nicklas bendtner does some things in poor taste:(

The 1998/2002 team was like Zen monks. They did really well and played with vigor. I just don't see that in any in the team today.

98 was our best team. Don't have the same quality today (few players excluded). Bendtner was a static joke against Australia. Too bad our replacement strikers are no better. There's a few good players on the team but we'd struggle to get out of any of the four groups. At least now we can blame it on a tough group rather than our inability to perform. No one expects us to make it through the group stage and no one will be disappointed.

It's amazing how seemingly nobody believes in their national team. Really goes to show how tough the Euro's actually are, one small misstep and you are out. I know things look bad for Portugal / Denmark but one upset in the first game and the whole dynamic changes significantly. I have to admit that after the CL Final i'd much rather root for an underdog. But oh well... :)

Btw. Dont forget to sign up for the Prediction League!

Yeah, about that: so I registered and filled in my first bets, however I often find myself leaving the process/forgetting about it throughout the tournament....so why don't we wager money - say $10 (paypal transfer)?
It's 5 ppl. atm (fuenf, GroteSmurf, Phantast, Tegris, Wilbury) so the first prize would amount to $50.

I'm not sure, while a little incentive would certainly be nice, i believe that the main GAF League should be free of charge.

If enough people are interested in wagering and someone would set it up, you could do it as a side-pool.

Miserable friendly exhibitions by Portugal. At this rate the only way we will blow away the opposition is if Ronaldo personally services them all :p

The worst part about these threads when the games are on is the insane amount of repetition in posts:

"what a shot!"

"nice shot"

"did you see that shot"

"now that's how you take shot"

"best shot ever"

Funny to read through though.
