Nintendo E3 2012 Conference Thread

Games are coming eventually.

Still, makes for a pretty damn boring conference. Come on Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft handed you this win on a silver platter. :|

After the Vita I will never take this for granted again no matter what company it is.

But if we take it easy and not dish out the disappointment, Nintendo won't let any of their cards out like the stubborn jerks they are.

Reminds me of the time where Iwata saw the E3 response to the 3DS and went 250$ on our ass. We need all the crap thrown at Nintendo because they're looking.

Hmm. You're right. The response to E3 2008 was enough for Miyamoto to announce Pikmin long before it was ready. I never considered that the backlash can make good things happen.

The difference now is that there seem to games that are ready to be announced, otherwise why release all of your prepared games at launch? So I think it's possible they could show something.

But it's all in Nintendo's hands right now. Let's see what they decide.

Hell, for all we know, their original plan could have been:
Event 1: Controller
Event 2: Launch Games
Event 3: Later Games
Event 4: 3DS Games

But probably not. I'm just hoping for one or two announcements.

The biggest lesson to take home is that there is a huge detachment between Nintendo and their fanbase or the gaming landscape in general. How they thought this was in any way acceptable is beyond me. Batman Arkham City, seriously?

See, though, I think their fanbase isn't what I'd consider "the gaming landscape." The Wii brought in a ton of casuals.

I think it was a pretty exaggerated response in here some hours ago. I don't get how it could've been any different. Sure, they could've gotten more relevant games, not just ports, but then again, it's a super-cheap way for Nintendo to cater to their casual "only has a Wii, and suddenly Assassin's Creed" crowd.

I'm not surprised at all by this conference. I was maybe expecting a new version of the 3DS, but maybe that's tomorrow. It was a very solid conference, it's just like everyone had hyped themselves up too much, and let themselves down. Nintendo's doing good.

Remember when the speculation threads were filled with hopes that Nintendo was getting every game announced for other systems but were under NDA?

Fun times lol
They're a 6 billion dollar games totally focused company. I'm sure there's something coming out in the next 5 years LOL. And as a dedicated Nintendo girl, even I admit I was disappointed. But I realize this is a new console and they have put out a decent launch lineup. New 3D Mario? New Starfox? New Metroid? New Xenoblade? New IPs? They will come. Everyone should have calmed down to understand that by now

Was anyone else somewhat alarmed that none of the core games were playable on stage? Are the only playable games on Wii-U so far just tech demos and the Nintendoland mini games?

:lol ok. Please look at my post history before pointing the finger. You know that's bannable right? Instead of having a discussion, you quickly accuse me of planting a defense force even though I'm not.

Btw, It was literally the worst console reveal of a-time (well since Saturn at least). Worst then PS3 $599. I've already said it a few times here AND on the neogaf Facebook channel. I hated to whole thing after Pikimin 3.

I am talking strictly sales here. Wii-U will be successful over the holidays, and fall off IF Nintendo doesn't do anything. As for a core console, it will be lucky to get western Third-party support as good as the GCN right now.

It's just Nintendo. And as much as I complain, I've learned to get used to it... because I do the same thing. Look at that upscaled Wii game, Pikmin 3. It barely uses the power of Wii U. But it's Pikmin 3, and that's my dog whistle, so like a slut I buy in. Nintendo is an abusive husband.

So true. That's my dog whistle too. A 360 level console with oodles of ram should have been a perfect pikmin machine - look at the texturing and water on the ancient GameCube. But it's nothing special. And I'll still lap it up and ask for more.

I do hope someone teaches Nintendo how to actually use modern tech. They probably don't even know what a shader is after so many years with low end tech.

They are hoping that fans that wanted to play Batman and Mass Effect 3 utterly forgot to buy it on PC/PS3/360 and are waiting out of the Wii-U version. Stuff out this year is fine, anything over 6 months old seems pointless, especially if it was fairly big,

Today's conference should have been simple: SHOW GAMES. AS MANY AS POSSIBLE. Don't fuck around too long with any one of them, just douse us with the shit. They have enough pressers and events this year that they don't need to waste time with any one game for too long. We'll get to that. Just show us everything. Get us excited, our hearts beating a bit quicker. MTV the shit out of us.

This is the truth.

That, and Nintendo failed to energize both it's core audience and those invested heavily in their competitors platforms.

No its a game that was original started on Wii and then redeveloped for WiiU, its clearly not just upscaled as anyone should be able to see.

You want a proper upres launch title from the previous generation? Go look at Kameo: Elements of Power. Switched platforms three times and yet still looked pretty good as a launch title for the 360. Pikmin looks like a middle of the road 360 title from years ago, not something that's supposed to showcase the next generation of Nintendo's console.

The Legend of BorkBork: BorkBorkity Borking
What irked me the most was that they specifically said how they were going to do things, and then NOT do them.

"We're going to talk about games".
Reggie starts talking about non-game stuff for significant portions of time.

"We're going to have a separate 3DS conference."
Proceeds to bring a dude up to talk about 3DS games for like 10 minutes.

Add that to the incredible amount of repetition in message and the cringe-worthy awkwardness, the whole conference becomes an exercise of maddening frustration. What were they thinking?

Yes this wasn't the best E3, the Wii U coulda used some more 1st party games shown for the future, but the Wii U lineup is looking great, theres probably 5 titles in it I'd like to get, compared to the 3DS where all I had to play until Zelda came along was Super street fighter IV.

The problem here was that there wasn't much shown that we haven't known about already for a year.

365 days.

GAF's gone through 6 speculation threads just to talk about essentially the same thing all over again.

Not only was the first-party launch lineup barely adequate, it was lacking in surprises (we knew about NSMBU and Pikmin 3). We don't have any sort of idea of what comes after December, or any glimpses of Nintendo franchises with that extra bit of HD gloss.

We have no clue what's going on with 3rd parties. With EA almost entirely absent and Activision a complete no-show, that doesn't give me a lot of confidence. When Batman (a great game admittedly) is the highlight of your 3rd party showing, that's a sign for concern. Additionally, most of the games demonstrated in that sizzle reel were ones we knew about last year. Where were the new game announcements?

When we still don't have a good idea of their online plan, price, or date, it also is a little saddening (if expected).

Lol, you can always tell when the they don't have much to show. The vamping was particularly hilarious and painful this year what with the "So many games, so little time!!!" angle.

If you have so many games to show, why not...I don't know, show them?

It's probably been asked a zillion times before, but where can I watch a recording of the live stream?

I had to miss this conference due to work.

Uhh... never mind. I found a link in the OP.

Well. lets see how much of a disappointment this is.... (based on the NeoGaf comments :p )

It's like 2006 all over again, but not for the reasons you think.

Remember what happened when we all groaned and said "oh man, that conference sucked"?

SMASH BROS. HAPPENED.

Can we at least wait til the end of the day for this shit, or are we going to prove that we never learn our lessons EVER?

What are you talking about? 2006 was an awesome show. SSB not showing up was just a slight disappointment, it ended up being icing on the cake later.

Right. After total silence for a year, you expect a blow out. Not this.

I am surprised that Retro Studios was a no show. They were rumoured to working on a Star Fox title for launch.

looked like the same old nintendo since 2008. I blame gaf for nuking this shit and having their hopes too high. shame on you.

You think already released games that will be 6months - 1 year old have a chance at being Million-Sellers and drive adoption of the console? Man someone should tell Irrational that Bioshock seriously under-performed on PS3.

never forget RE4.

The difference is Nintendo had a great hook with the Wii with Wii-Sports and Wii-Fit and were able to usher in a whole new way of gaming for the general populace. Where is that hook now? You think they can just re-release the same exact hash on the Wii and expect it to move units with nothing unique? If that's the case why is the almighty Rock Band plummeting?

Rock Band/Guitar Hero plummeted so quickly because they got releases every year. (like Tony Hawk games) COD finally hit that fatigue with MW3 but still huge. At least for these "rehashed" Nintendo games, they always have a few years in between so it won't be as fatigue as the yearly release.

Also, your points most likely would apply to all console maker for the next gen games announcement.

What is the price of Wii U? I missed that.

I mean, I personally think the Wii U will do fine, but as a gamer, I already gave up hope that Nintendo gives a shit a long time ago. The hardest of the hardcore Nintendo fan are really shamless - as long as they're getting THE LATEST ITERATION of Mario, Zelda, Metroid and occasionally Nintendo throws them a bone by reviving one of their older franchises, it doesn't matter if they have zero new ideas. They'll buy the system anyway, and suck it down when Nintendo returns to focus on their casuals and non-gamers.

As I said, Nintendo Land is almost self-parody levels of pandering. It's a party game (and we know the industry is missing more mini-game compilations), wee - hey casuals, here's your dog whistle - but it's ALSO a Nintendo Franchise Whore game, so the hardcores can look at it and SQUEEEEEEE when they see Link and their own Mii interacting in barely playable chunks of gameplay that was so shite it couldn't past standard for their own full fledged products.

Nintendo is an abusive husband.

yo skies i waited until tomorrow, i guess the surprise you wanted me to see about the Wii U pad was its atrocious battery life?

*Confused.gif*

Well said. Exactly how I feel. With WiiU, I feel it's not for me from the get-go. And I'm a Nintendo fan since the NES. I know I will need my crack down the road so I will buy one but there's an empty void right now.

What will Capcom and Activision be bringing?

I am assuming that BLOPS 2 will be on Wii U, but will RE 6 be there too?

Also, disappointing to see Peter Moore confirming that Wii U will miss the Madden and other EA Sports titles this autumn. I guess ME3 is a good surprise, but NFS or Warfighter would have been better.

Nope, gotta have awkward banter between the presenters and taaalking.....verrry.....slowly.....

Worst part is that Nintendo mostly brought the hate on themselves. They kept promising they were "in tune" with the core gamer, they promised far more 3rd party titles, even in the presentation itself they promised more games than you could shake a stick at...and yet they failed to deliver on all fronts. I haven't seen such a well and proper failure of expectations in quite a while. I mean, the MS conference sucked but at least I could see the shit coming a mile away.

Many papers send a reporter to E3. You really think that if they catered solely to the hardcore the reporter would write nothing and jack off during the entirety of E3?

NOW they do. When do you think that suddenly changed? Do I need to bring up videos of E3 conferences from 1995 or even 2000 to show you just how much more the mainstream press has a presence at E3 now that there are items to cover that their readership wants to see?

What are you talking about? 2006 was an awesome show. SSB not showing up was just a slight disappointment, it ended up being icing on the cake later.

Go back and read GAF in 2006. I hear the same things now that I heard then. They had 3 hardcore games at E3 that everyone expected, one standout title that everyone was excited for, and the rest was casual gaming.

Looking back, things always look better than they were. Always.

Is really bizarre the lack of Activision, and Specially EA since they were "really excited" about the system last year. Not even the token Madden port.

i mean, what exactly did nintendo show us that make the consumers want to purchase a wiiu day 1? Isn't that the whole point of Iwata stating that they learned their mistakes with the 3DS? All of the third party games are ports, so pointless to buy those, and then the first person games are okay I guess, but I don't want to buy a new system at launch to play NSMB. I'm actually a huge Nintendo fan, but I just can't see myself purchasing this system on launch which is a first when it comes to Nintendo systems.

if you have a 3ds, then you know that nintendo and sony live in two completely different universes.

Except third parties gave their word they would support 3DS and have supported every Nintendo handheld prior. I've been thru too many Nintendo launches before to fall for this again. Things are a lot different this time. UE4 supposedly won't be on it. CE3 will work, but they aren't actually making any games for it. Almost every third party game announced for PS3/360 is coming out next year. Wii U won't get them. That's after dev kits will have been out for at least 2.5 years, it's supposed to be easy to port to and it has a more traditional controller. This is looking worse than GC.

Pie and Beans

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
Reflecting on the conference now, this product is all over the place. Gone is the simple "Wii Sports" kernel to what the general public is supposed to be excited for, instead on presentation you have:

- The Wii U pad
- still using Wiimotes (motion pluses only?)
- break out your Wii Fit Board again or they'll package it again?
- the X360 pro pad

The Wii U pad itself of course back to the supposedly terrifying multi-stick many buttoned controller the Wii audience was terrified of.

Its just shooting off in all directions. Its too complicated for the hyper casual, its not cutting edge enough or 'hardcore' for the other set. I just dont know who the product is for other than what seems like more of a gimmick play than the DS ever was.

Is there a developer roundtable tonight? Or just the 3DS software showcase tomorrow night?

There is, but it is with the Nintendo hardware guy I believe so I am not expecting anything.

We are gamers. We don't give a fuck about sales. We care about games. And because the games aren't there, there won't be any sales. I think you assume WAY too much.

Yeah, really made no sense. Remember that Nintendo Direct that showed off the hardware on Sunday so we could talk about games today? Here's a summary of it.

Just checked the thumbnails for the private videos on Nintendo's channel.

Looks like we'll be getting a 3DS sizzle reel, an Iwata asks, and trailers for Luigi's Mansion 2, Paper Mario, Scribblenauts, and Castlevania. Eh.
