Trine 2: Director's Cut (Wii U) Details/Screens (E3 2012)

I somehow missed this thread the first time around, not the second. :)

Put this one down under 'pleasant surprise' for the Wii U conference. Definitely grabbing this, always wanted to play it but didn't get around to it on ps3/360.

Same here. I haven't played Trine 2 yet, I however have played Trine 1 and thought the game was very fun. Man, seeing the youtube videos and the list of improvements this game is getting, I'm excited!
Getting a confirmation that it is an eShop title, that the game will be competitively priced and that you can play just on the Wii U GamePad (thanks JoelFB) will make this a nice treat come the holidays.

Also, you guys rock for supporting the Wii U @ launch.

I wonder if Nintendo is imposing size restrictions on downloadable games like the they did on Wii. Given the rumoured low amount of internal storage on WiiU. Trine 2 on the PC is over a gig in size. You could easily max out just buying lots of games.

They already stated retail games will be sold in both physical and digital format. This means we'll have 20+ GB games for download at some point.

Also, it supports both SD cards and USB hard drives. For 70 bucks you can get 500GBs of storage.

Not as impressive as an OLED screen but it looks like resolution is better than Vita, and graphics are so much better anyway that yeah, it's a bew benchmark.

Isn't the screen resolution on the Wii U controller 854x480? If so, then that's lower than the Vita's 960x544.

Who is publishing this game?

Frozenbyte itself? Like their other games.

Atlus published the other versions of Trine 2.

Thanks guys. :)

Yeah that FutureShop thing, I think they're just listing all the titles that have been announced or something. We haven't exactly communicated the downloadable aspect that well either, so some people have mistaken it as a full retail game. We have nothing against retail though, we'd love to do that too, but at our pricepoint it's maybe not the best idea (or even possible until later).

On AA, I think we use FXAA or so, but I'll have to confirm with the programmers once we get back to Finland.

And yes you can play just on the Wii U GamePad. :)

(And yes online co-op is available on other platforms as well - but on Wii U we'll have the exclusive party mode which will go for some asymmetric gameplay.)

Thanks for the answer, and wow that's pretty good news.

Count on me to buy it, fantastic work!

So far and by far.

Trine 2 is one of the best looking games around, even on PCs.

I reckon I should have written "Best Wii U graphics so/by far", but messed up. It is indeed one of the most beautiful games I've come across. With news of it being a downloadable title and fully playable on the Wii U Gamepad alone, my purchase is set on stone. Very nice of Joel to pay us a visit here. Great job, guys! Your game is one of the very few I know for sure I'll be getting on Wii U.

The game looks boss. I'm tempted to d/l on Xbox live now because it completely flew under my radar, but I think I'd rather have the Wii U version so I have stuff to play on it and can use the streaming controller function. Plus the bonus content (and hopefully it's a little prettier on U than 360, because the graphics are what caught my attention the most).

Sorry for asking this but will the other versions of the game get a Director's cut update by any chance?

More people should play Trine 2 whichever platform. It looks great as console version but on pc it's one of the most beautiful games I've ever seen. There's so much movement and detail on screen, it's just amazing.

It's also one of the best looking 3D enabled games I've ever seen. Trine 2 plus Nvidia 3D Vision is glorious.

Ah right, good to hear. :) Yeah we do google stalking quite a bit, and obviously here's where the action goes down when anything significant happens, so we're always lurking in the shadows (I used to hang around on GAF more regularly back in 2004-2005 or so but then work just got too busy and all).

What version of the devkit are you guys using in making this game?

Hmm if you don't mind me asking, how does the Nvidia 3D Vision work? I'm afraid this is the first time I've heard of it ^_^;

I've played and beaten both Trine games on the PS3, and i definitely liked both of them. I'd recommend Trine 2 to any new WiiU owners, especially if you havnt played any of the previous versions.

Not quite. The PC is getting the expansion pack, The Goblin Menace, along with the Wii U but it's not getting the Director's Cut.

I highly suspect Director's cut = Trine 2 + DLC given a fancy name to sound like an exclusive game.

Read the press release again. The Director's Cut and the DLC are 2 different things. From the sounds of it the DLC will still need to be purchased and downloaded separately on the Wii U.

Yeah sorry I had only seen a smaller version of the press release. Still, to be honest the changes sound mostly like a big patch and some changes to make the game more suitable for Wii U controllers.

I'm not sure if this version will offer anything significant over the PC version. Kind of seems like a Batman Wii U situation to me.

Still a good game though. so worth getting if you haven't already played it.

Do you find any drawbacks when using the gamepad screen such as cutting the framerate or whatever?

Cause it seems that that when it's used, there are added limits to the graphics.

720p with AA BTW is perfect, honestly I played Portal in The Orange Box on 360 set to 720p and it looked fantastic on my (though small) 1080p monitor, even up close. And that seemed to lack AA.

Does the game run in 60 frames?

This game looks amazing, the only thing is for some reason its not listed on xbla in australia, anyone know why that is? Its in all other.regions..

3D Vision requires a 120hz monitor (not to be confused with TVs that falsely label refresh rates) and a 3D vision kit. This is the only real way (aside from AMD's solution) to run games at 1080P 3D @60fps. The software is pretty great at taking care of things. Although some games work better than others (although mods can usually fix poor games somewhat).

3D Play is software you can buy that allows you to play on a 3DTV. This allows you to use your tv sets 3D glasses. Like all 3D tvs, it's limited to HDMI. Which means you're capped at 720P 3D @ 60fps or 1080P 3D @ 24fps. Again, the software does most of the work and there's not a whole lot involved.

Trine 2, as previously stated, is absolutely mind blowing in 1080P 3D @ 60fps. Truly a showcase game and utterly amazing.

As you can tell probably tell, this is exclusive to Nvidia video cards. AMD cards need to use different software. And because you essentially need to render twice the framerate (120fps = 60fps 3D), you're not gonna be able to roll with an 8800GT.

I've looked into it and apparently even the devs don't know why it's not on Australian XBLA, it's pretty insane. It's on Aus Steam so it's not banned or anything.

How much better are the graphics on DC for WiiU than the PC version ?

Probably going to be bit worse for WiiU considering the resolution, anti-aliasing and no 3D option (I think).

the only real way to enjoy trine 2 fully is to play it in 3d, but at least nintendo fans will enjoy this pretty game.

I need to get back and play my free PS+ version. I hope this isn't a retail $50 on the WiiU, that will just be a money grab, sort of like that Gameloft dungeon game on the Vita that was $40.

Seriously - ive been waiting for this game for AGES and it just never showed up. maybe the guy from Trine can shed some light on it because im not sure why it wouldnt be up.

:)

I see, i thought there was something better there visually to make it more appealing

I mean since they call it Director's Cut, what is there extra comparing to PC that was cut ?

If I understand correclty, new levels/areas and new asimmetric multiplayer.
plus, compared to the other console versions, it should be visually better, due to the AA added.

Sorry if I'm wrong.

How has so many people in this thread never heard of Trine?

Do some people only look at titles here if they're on a Nintendo platform?

There are a lot of games, in the market.
I think that being presented as one of the few games for the new platform during the E3, could be a little help in gaining attention.

Wont the new levels/areas be on the new DLC for PC though ?

At least will be 1080p that is above other consoles, which is a plus for bigger TVs
