[Nintendo Direct] 3DS XL (90% larger screen, 4GB SD, better battery) OP has details

I think the DSi is one of Nintendo's best-designed handhelds, from the hardware side of things. Up there with the GB Pocket.

The original 3DS is not exactly a looker in the modern electronics world, but they've still managed to make the second version even less attractive. I think Nintendo deserves some recognition for that accomplishment.

Uh same resolution as the original 3DS?

So does that mean the pixels are 2x as big?

Ugh - really going to look nasty next to those sexy Vita screens.

It'd probably be worse if they doubled (well, quadrupled) the resolution but everything or near-everything ran at the original anyway. Just look at PSP games unfiltered, or even them filtered but compared to the Vita: the resolution bump would be worthless.

E3 now makes no sense.
also, cool they fixed the bottom 3 buttons.

EDIT:

Why would it make no sense?

Why would it make no sense?

Why didn't they announce the XL at E3? The Nintendo Direct was in the same month, they most likely planned to reveal it then, so why not at E3 instead, during the 3DS Conference? That would have got some big attention.

Same question for Layton 3DS.

Honestly, I think we can safely assume Nintendo is done with E3 in terms of making it the focal point of their annual attention.

Nintendo have discovered Nintendo Direct, and without access to actual figures or stats to prove any point, I would imagine they're satisfied they are able to reach people the same way through Nintendo Direct than they are at E3.

That information still gets out there, with the added benefit that Nintendo can dictate when and how it wants to do things. I still think the bulk of the Wii U information we're currently missing will come from a Nintendo Direct dropped onto the internet with a day or two's notice, rather than any major conferences or trade shows.

As much as I love the build up and anticipation to E3 it's a direction I'm satisfied with, as it means Nintendo is able to feed is information in a relatively high profile and contained way all year round. And the fact I want to buy a 3DS XL isn't impacted because they didn't announce it at E3.

The wiiU-dedicated ND just before the conference was fine.

Oh yeah, that was cool but also a bit different. Anyway, basically what I'm saying is that console specific stuff is weird, the opposite allows for less cock-ups and is generally just more interesting.

The reasoning behind this is *puts thinking cap on*

Think of this as advertising. E3 happened and within 2 or so weeks since then the news has kind of died down about E3 and everything that went on. The big reveal for Nintendo at E3 was the Wii U and now everyones slowly stopping talking about what happened, they come with yet another brilliant direct and get people talking about them again. Add to that the 3DSLL announcement and you've got massive advertising for literally no cost. It's a brilliant way to get people talking again and I love the way they're doing these directs <3

I've been really wanting a 3DSXL but with no 2nd analog meaning only bigger picture I think i'm going to pass for now. I really haven't been having a problem with games on the regular 3DS so I think i'm going to pass on this.

I may try and sell my current one to get one of those purple 3DS though, love that purple.

Lol, Nintendo taking a page from Sony on how to try and make a profit; you have to buy the damn adapter separate smh...

Doesn't Nintendo usually have a thing around the time that TGS occurs? I wouldn't be surprised if exactly that happens.

They had a little conference last year before TGS because they didn't show up there, and they do have a press event sometimes before the release of a new console (in fall) to announce the price and release date.

I really don't get why people keep saying this... there are like a half dozen games that use the CPP as an optional input. Nintendo barely shipped the thing... it was pretty obvious they were not going to make a big thing of dual analogues going forward.

Well whatever they do, my tickets for the hype train are as good as bought.

How can it be 90% bigger when there is one inch difference? And aren't the games gonna look bad when the resolution stays the same?

I would like to remind everyone what the DS Lite's (the first DS revision) battery life was like:

That has to be bullshit. I don't remember my DSL lasting anywhere near 15 hours. It was more like 8 hours, and that was on the second or third brightness level out of four.

Yeah, I get what you mean regarding clours and that they could be better... but a machine primarily playing games will never be taken seriously.

They are a device to play games on. Not a statement about who you are or define you.

Yes I know that but I would like to own a device that I feel looks nice and goes with my other electronics.

Could be my OCD but I like most of the tech items I own to be minimalist.

Minimalist = modern.

I hope we don't have to wait until EU launch to get an unboxing, or a closer look at the real thing. The press pics and that video really doesn't show it off.

I don't really care about low DPI. As long as colors are vibrant, I'll be ok with that. When I played DS games on 3DS, it wasn't blury image that turned me off, I really hated washed out colors.

Not that I have one, but I read if you turn off power savings mode, it helps with the colors. I don't know if thats true or not, but try it.

That was fixed with like the first system update. Colors were indeed washed out at first.

Were in the time of consistent handheld revisions and at this point, regardless if it has major uses or not, we want our moneys worth and adding a bigger screen AND dual analogs would have been a major thing. Plus the CPP is an add on, which of course is going to limit its support. On the other hand building a 2nd analog into the 3DSXL would have made it a part of the system and would have meant more support for it going forward from developers. With the poor color choices and only bigger screen i think its a pass for now. I certainly want a bigger screen, but I can certainly hold out a couple years for another revision or at least better color choice and price drop or bundle.

Nah, it't still not the same as for example DSi. I played Pokemon Black head to head on 3DS and DSi, and the colors still looked much worse on the 3DS, even after the update.

IMO the screen is just shitty.
