The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim PC Performance discussion

OMFG HOLY MOTHER OF MARY IN HEAVEN I CANT BELIEVE IT WTF WHERE ARE MY SEDATIVES AAAAHHH
I'm putting this here too, if there would be a mod or something for this.

Okay so I managed to delete my +100h save and I decided to start Skyrim again from the beginning. I have always played on the hardest difficulty and now when I started I can't beat anyone.

Playing on PC and I just noticed the enemies/monsters have regenerating health. Has this always been like this? This is SHIT. I'm seriously considering stopping the game because of that. I'm certain this wasn't the case when I first started my playthrough when Skyrim came out.

W...T.......F.....

Didn't know where else to post this, but I feel I had to share my feelings to other skyrim fans. I just hit the 200hr mark and I think I'm nearing almost finishing every significant thing you can do. I've bought all houses and filled them with books and loot. I've become thane in every city and have collected all masks and daedric artifacts. I finished all questlines..reached lvl 60 and fully scoured the map.

I feel like I've played this game "right" in a sense and it followed a natural progression and things just sorta played out right. For example, I was tasked with a siege on a fort and I started with storm call, which rained lighting down on my foes. We took them all out but one who took off running down the road. I noticed a red dot on my map and took after him. I had to pop a stamina potion to catch him but when I did, it went into a kill cam and I stabbed him in the back. The fact that it didn't HAVE to do that, but it did..perfection.

As a kid I dreamed about this kind of game..and I finally have completed it. It's sad in a way but it was a great journey and now begins the long wait until es6 :(

Just wanted to share my love affair with this game and I hope everyone basked in this games atmosphere and played it the way it should be played. It all felt like a giant LOTR movie that I controlled. I love it. I love it so much.

I just swapped out my 8800GT for a Asus 6850 1GB card. Problem is I can't force vsync, AF, AA etc or anything, even using the RadeonPro software. I'm using Catalyst 12.2 drivers.

Is it because RadeonPro isn't compatible with Cat 12.2 drivers?

I'm also getting lots of stuttering, something I didn't get with my 8800GT in Skyrim :(

Running with patch 1.4 as 1.5 sucks.

So since installing 1.5 three days ago, ive only seen the kill cam come up twice in 10 hours of gameplay. Something is definately wrong. Anyone else seen this. Could it be a mod issue?

Just tried playing this for the first time and I get this weird effect on the opening not sure if it continues into the main game but I presume it does. My specs are 4gb ram, 6850 and i5 2500k. Not sure what is causing this, I can play other games perfectly fine. I'm running no mods and the graphic settings were set by the game to high. My drivers and application profile is up to date.

EDIT: Seems like it is an issue with the latest drivers and certain cards, fucking AMD.

Douchebag. Yes, me.
I fired this up to start a new character. I haven't played since the 1.5 patch dropped.

I'm getting a really strange problem. If I'm on my horse exploring the overland, after about a minute of running around my horse's galloping sounds cut out. Also, I won't hear any creatures around me. If I go to the menu, I don't get any UI sounds either. However, ambient noises and music continue to play just fine. Eventually all the sounds come back, about 2-3 seconds after I stop running around on my horse

Is this a known bug? Is there a fix? I don't remember this happening in the previous 80+ hours I've invested in the game.

lol I'm using 10. something. I do need to update for battlefield 3, because I'm getting texture glitches in that game. But I just know it will fuck up this game.

Not sure if this goes here or in the other thread. I just installed Skrim on my PC and every time I alt tab out of the game to look something up online....when I go back to the game it is a blank black screen and I have to close it out entirely and restart. Not sure whats up.

It does that on mine. It works for me if I alt-tab to it twice in a row (alt-tab to it, then hit alt-tab again and click on its icon). It's still a pain though, so generally I use the steam overlay, my phone or the netbook to look stuff up.

OK I just now have started to seriously play Skyrim. I'm using a 360 controller and the very first thing I noticed was the stuttering. Happens with the mouse too. So I tried a couple fixes and finally I found the one that works... windowed mode. Runs smooth as butter in windowed mode, no stutters.

But its windowed mode. Any tips on how to remove the borders, center it on screen, etc?

I use this

Thank you much!

That one didn't exactly quite work for me, I mean it worked but it didn't quite center to my screen properly so i tried

http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=12345

with the added "/noborder /fullscreen /stretch /exe Skyrimlauncher.exe" (without the quotes) and that works flawlessly, brings up the launcher first too. You wouldn't even know it's windowed mode.

I can't believe how much better this game runs in windowed mode. So weird. I've never had to do that for a game before ever.

OK So I've run into another small problem.

Using windowed mode completely eliminated any stuttering when moving the camera.

HOWEVER

it introduced this... thing... where if I move the camera up and down I see these horizontal crawling lines. There's a whole bunch of them evenly spaced. They're not like visible full lines, they're like when you play a game with no vsync and the screen tears, that kind of line.

If I switch back to fullsceen they're gone but then the stutter is back.

Is anyone familiar with what I'm talking about and know how to get rid of those in windowed mode?

Edit- fixed. Had to do with using the windowed mod I linked above instead of the one MrTroubleMaker recommended. His fixes the problem.

Ever since the Beth High Res textures I've been getting stuttering whenever a torch or candle, etc is nearby.

Recently though, it's progressed to turning into a slideshow after playing for around 30 mins or more. Tried looking at temps and it peaks at around 130*F shortly here or there, but I looked when it would get all choppy and temps seemed average.

I really don't think it's that my system can't handle the game, but it's getting progressively worse. The only mods I have are the Osaku (sp) better water and fire, dragonbone weapons, and sounds of skyrim.

I have a problem...

Before the game was running great, loading times were short and quick and then when I got out of the trader house in the first town, the game went bonkers basically....screen was red and green and I couldn't see the game....

Restarted it, and now the loadings are big as hell. It doesn't even make sense, the only thing that seems to somewhat help is Ctrl Alt Del and then getting back to it. But after two or three loading screens it all goes to shit in other ways.

I have re installed it twice now, surfed the web, and I can't find a fix. Loadings are messed up period...

Help?

Anyone with the most recent nvidia beta drivers (300 something, forget exactly) notice weird issues? My times with loading my save went from about 10 seconds to over a minute.

I'm having the same problem. Load times are unbearable now, especially since I fast travel all the time.

Yeah I think I'm going back to the 296.10 ones. I don't even know why I bothered I already get great performance and I shouldn't screw around with something that works. Lesson learned I guess.

Hi guys, I just got my new pair of 3D glasses for my Panasonic ST30 and I wanted to test them out with some games, I tried Alan Wake and even though nvidia recommends not to play it in 3D, I felt it was a nice gimmick, no visible glitches in the five minutes I played.
Then I tried Skyrim, it should have optimal 3D support according to nvidia, and I didn't think it was very good in 3D. Shadows are all messed up, the highlights are all on the front row even if they shouldn't be, and so on.
Anything I should know? I thought the nvidia drivers took care of all the recommended settings (crosshair, water, etc). I'd like to play it in 3D since it looks like it has optimal support. Anyone tried it with nvidia 3dtv play? I'm using the free 14 days trial.
Sorry if this isn't the right thread.

It's a known problem with the recent beta drivers on factory-overclocked cards. Somehow it (also) prevents the card from correctly changing to 3D clocks, as discussed on the official NVIDIA forums.

I have an i5 2320 clocked at 3.0 ghz
6 gb ram
GTX 555 1 gb

The only graphical mod I have is the official high res texture pack and I usually get between 50-60 fps in cities or in the world. For some reason in caves and other indoor locations if there are lots of dust particles or certain types of water or light sources my frame rate drops to like 25-40. Any idea why this happens? Seems like if I can run cities and open world at 60 fps consistenly on ultra preset it shouldn't be an issue.

I seem to have fixed my problem by lowering shadows from Ultra to High so now I'm getting 60 fps pretty much everywhere but the Thieves Guild. Strange that one setting can make such a big difference.

I'm having an issue where randomly upon loading a save, exiting a building, or fast traveling my frame rate drops to about 5-10 fps. I've tried waiting it out, thinking it was just having issues loading everything. It didn't seem to help at all. Strangely all the menus work perfectly. The only way to fix it is to completely quit out of the game and restart it. I tried searching Google, but couldn't find a fix for this.

Here's my system specs in case it will help:

GTX 460
i5 750
4 GB ram

I used the shadow and memory tweaks in the op. Also using nvidia inspector's frame rate limiter (58), and d3d overrider. I only have 4 mods installed:

SkyUI and the script extender
Space Core
Unread Books Glow
Racial Bonus in Description

By the way, I only have the settings set to High. I also lowered AA a little to help with my frame rate. Maybe I've just missed something between the OP here and searching Google. If I can't fix this it's tolerable enough. Would be nice to not have to worry about it though.

So anyone know what causes this problem?

Every time I enter the dark brohood sanctuary I enter a void and start falling through the world. I can see bits of furniture and stuff in the distance and they start to fall too. I can't work out which mod it is or what.

Thought I'd ask here if anyone has had a similar problem before I purge everything.

Go to the Bethesda forums, it's a clusterf#ck for a good deal of people.

It break Ambient Occlusion support, the new grass shadows seem to affect performance, and don't even look that hot (and they really should be working on fixing the shadows that are already there).

Really, I'm not having the crashing and gameplay corruption issues others are having, but ambient occlusion being broken is utter nonsense. I can't play the game without it after running it with it the whole time I've played it. Sure, you can use nvidia inspector to set a Fallout 3 AO compatibility profile, but the performance of the game under that profile is crap, and the AO itself looks like crap using that profile too.

newest edition of Nvidia Inspector added Skyrim presets. My performance certainly improved with the updated drivers and that new AO setting.

If people are still using this, I really think we should clean up that OP.

At least in my experience, there's a lot of suggestions in there that are flat out incorrect.

When I'm playing and enter a building or dungeon, whole tiles no longer render. There's gigantic holes in the map. Leaving and coming back doesn't fix it.

What's going on? Is the save getting too bloated? (this is PC)

Go into a small cell (like the whiterun house) and type "pcb" into the console. That will purge all the cached cells in your save and may or may not fix the problem.

that made it so the cells that did load are gone now and when I enter a dungeon it's just blue empty space.

You've got a bigger problem then. Start a new character and see if the same areas do the same things and you'll know whether it is your save or the the game data that is corrupted.

Came back to this after a few months.. lol cat 12.2 was rendering skyrim as a see through/blocky mess. I updated to Catalyst 12.3,and everything seemed fine for a while. But now i'm getting some fantastic zigzag artifacting. It almost looks like.. a ghosting sort of thing? :/

I've removed mods, and all that good stuff. Any ideas?

EDIT: forgot to remove the d3d9.dll thing. that might have fixed it. :p

So I'm running Pure Waters mod and here is the difference between above and below water views:

But in the PC screenshot thread L0st Id3ntity was showing this:

And I'm using his ENB settings too so I don't know what's up.

Dice

Pokémon Parentage Conspiracy Theorist
I have it set to stay up to date. The settings page says its v1.6.89.0.6.

Dice

Pokémon Parentage Conspiracy Theorist
Everything checked out fine... wonderful.

Edit: Apparently pure waters is causing the green haze, because it goes away when I turn it off. I don't know how he got Pure Waters as well as clear vision. But now obviously my issue is figuring out why I can't start a new game.

Edit 2: Apparently when I disable every single mod including ENB, it still locks up before even going to the load screen when trying to start a new game. Awesome.

^ That's unfortunate, wish I could help.

Tried out the new parallax mods, decent improvement:

paralq28lf.png

Also I can affirm now that the game is unplayable without a nice enb:

222hw813.png

Mind you the first pic isn't even vanilla skyrim, far from it, it's heavily modded just with enb off.

For some weird reason or another, I bothered to run Skyrim on a piddling Intel HD Graphics 3000, since I see that I'll be stuck with an ultraportable without any dedicated chips in there for the next three years. Turns out that it can run it fairly well at low settings - around 20-30 FPS at 1366x768. Setting a custom resolution of 848x480 and forcing the game to run at it by editing the configuration files actually manages to send the laptop into 30-60 FPS territory, especially indoors. Heck, I could even turn up the actor and light fade settings (these are for visibility) a bit, into medium territory, I think. (I don't mind gaming in upscaled SD.)

Many of the posts I have seen seem to be for prettifying up the game. I wonder whether there exist mods which are more performance-oriented?
