Some good posts in here, but really guys, you forgot the best map in videogames:

Pictures just don't do it justice. So good.

I was OBSESSED with this overworld. Studied the strategy guides. Looked for every secret spot.

+1

Leaving Midgar in FFVII was a major "holy shit" moment.

Exact same feeling.

But for me...

and...

Most fucking amazing game ever! I have the Collectors edition already preordered and reading the novels as we speak. Its going to be glorious.

BTW, somethig mind blowing amazing...

Let me introduce you to this, my friend snuggler...

First of all, THIS is the whole map of the original The Witcher. A small zone of the Temeria Kingdom.
rWJoA.jpg

This is the world Sapkowski created for the novels, the empire of Nilfgaard
aqRT5.jpg

This is the map from The Witcher 2, is difficult to know what the places are as the names are written in another language
VbjK4.jpg

And this, is the incredible comparison shot of where the second game takes place, compared to the original. Holy moly of god.
nUfnQ.jpg

You can see just how big has the world scale up to compared to the little zone you played in The Witcher. Yeah, most probably it will be zones from the whole map, but it will still be bigger and much more varied than in the original game.
Also you can see one of the main things in the story just be looking at the map, as we know for the title and trailers theres an assasin thats been killing kings. Or rather we say it has killed 1 king.
If you look at the map, theres a vacant throne in the Kingdom of Aedirn, which means that the kings head in the trailer was from there. The other 3 kings are:
-King Foltest from Temeria (the main king in the witcher 1)
-King Radovid V the Stern of Redenia (the king that appears also in the game and future husband of Adda, Foltest's daugther
if you didnt kill adda, of course
)
-King Henselt of Kaedwen (isnt mentioned in the first game)

A few details to be more excited!

Lost all credibility.
A good world map is a big thing for me. With 2D platformers, I think I have been spoiled by the DKC series and Super Mario Worlds.

Special shout-out for Donkey Kong Country Returns' maps. Absolutely loved them.

Yuck, I've never played the DKCR but I hate how structured that looks and like it's straight out of Mario Party or New Super Mario Bros. The maps for DKC 1/2/3 are so much more interesting IMO.

Haven't played Ninety Nine Nights, but I heard that I will be sucked. Perhaps its world map is really engrossing.

Put me down as another in favor of Silent Hill's map. I also like Xenoblade's "map". Just the bodies of the two titans was really cool.

YES! My first thought, as well. I remember being ten years old and being so excited to explore the whole island. Of course all the levels are fairly linear, but it was still really cool to visit each of the differently themed areas.

One of my favorite games ever. <3

Leaving Midgar in FFVII was a major "holy shit" moment.
Seriously. It was my first JPRG, and I had NO CLUE there was an overworld. I was completely floored. Midgar already seemed huge on it's own...

I can't find a good screen of it but most recently the world map of Sacred 2 really pulled me in. It's so huge.

in a game with very fast movement even moving the indicator on that map took awhile.

6000pixel version. I think I had bigger topographical one before

Came here to post this.

The best part was that there was NO OTHER MAP. That was it. You had a green circle that showed where you were on that map, but you could run run for a solid few minutes before seeing it budge. No radar that showed every little path, and you can literally get to any place on that map.

So beautiful.

Still my favorite area of any RPG. Sometimes I just like to sit there and pretend...(Chrono Trigger).

I don't think your LTTP picture is big enough.

FFVII%20-%20Overworld%202-620x.jpg

Final Fantasy VII. You spend all this time in a very steampunk-esque city, battling an environment-killing corporation, and then BAM! Some old soldier named Sephiroth just killed who you thought was the big bad villain, your main character is starting to act unhinged, and it looks like shit is seriously about to get real. And then...you leave the city and realize you still have the rest of the world to visit.

Leaving Midgar in FFVII was a major "holy shit" moment.
1990s Squaresoft is still master and commander of the world map.

What is That? Fucking That?

Um. World of Warcraft. Its all fully zoomed out but that thing is massive. And doesn't show the new Pandaria continent. Or Outland.

There's about 15-20 zones each in Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor, and 5-6 each in Northrend, Outland, Pandaria (upcoming).

I've been playing for about a year and a half and I haven't even visited all the zones yet, let alone explored them fully :(

For those who don't know, it goes from World > Continent > Zone.
Outland, Northrend, Pandaria are each about 1/3 of the main continents.

So nice to see some Asheron's Call love, makes me almost want to go back. Frostfell represent!

Not exactly a World Map but pretty much served as the only sense of home in the game and that tune will always be with me.

I always see it the wrong way the first time I open it. You normally should look from above onto it, but I always see it from below first. I get so confused by it.

Dragon Quest VIII world map.
I actually remember having the manual opened up just to look where I am now. It's gorgeous to wander around this world.

The map from the first Shogun: Total War (and the first Total War game). I actually prefer this more stylized map to the more realistic ones in the later Total War games.

Witcher 2 does have a good map, but man, the implementation in-game was awful. At least in the 360 version.

I really enjoy Skyrim's map, though Oblivion's map with the coloration and UI mods actually makes that world more enjoyable for all its boring copypasted forests. And while I'm on TES games, filling in Vvardenfell's generic map with the detailed map as you go to each area square by square was SO much fun. Best way to encourage exploration ever. Give you one generic political map that slowly becomes a geographical map as you explore... loved it.

Also, a good Metroidvania lives and dies by it's map design. Circle of the Moon has an awesome map layout.

And I love the way games like STALKER and Far Cry 2 integrate the map into the game itself.

Here is a bad example, looks better in game
Fucking hate that map. It may look cool but it's functionality is awful. Zero help when it comes to finding the right path up a mountain or such, way too cluttered deeper into the game when you've got markers all over the place and if you've got a bunch of active quests, and you can barely zoom out, so sometimes you don't even know what part of the map you're looking at cause you see such a small part of it.

For me personally it's Digimon World 1 (PS1). Exploring around the world just base on this map has never been so fun.

Every map for me did. With the music a lot of them seemed foreboding. Especially for the humans during the war, in the future, on the ground here, etc.

There are mods that make the map show all the roads and paths, without them it can be pretty frustrating.

(Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga) One of the simplest looking maps considering how massive the overworld actually is.

LoZ: OoT & FFXI. Just looking at the maps you wouldn't think there was anything special in those worlds, but man, brings back soooo many memories just taking a look back at them now.
