Dragon Warrior
I was OBSESSED with this overworld. Studied the strategy guides. Looked for every secret spot.
Leaving Midgar in FFVII was a major "holy shit" moment.
Most fucking amazing game ever! I have the Collectors edition already preordered and reading the novels as we speak. Its going to be glorious.
BTW, somethig mind blowing amazing...
Let me introduce you to this, my friend snuggler...
First of all, THIS is the whole map of the original The Witcher. A small zone of the Temeria Kingdom.
This is the world Sapkowski created for the novels, the empire of Nilfgaard
This is the map from The Witcher 2, is difficult to know what the places are as the names are written in another language
And this, is the incredible comparison shot of where the second game takes place, compared to the original. Holy moly of god.
You can see just how big has the world scale up to compared to the little zone you played in The Witcher. Yeah, most probably it will be zones from the whole map, but it will still be bigger and much more varied than in the original game.
Also you can see one of the main things in the story just be looking at the map, as we know for the title and trailers theres an assasin thats been killing kings. Or rather we say it has killed 1 king.
If you look at the map, theres a vacant throne in the Kingdom of Aedirn, which means that the kings head in the trailer was from there. The other 3 kings are:
-King Foltest from Temeria (the main king in the witcher 1)
-King Radovid V the Stern of Redenia (the king that appears also in the game and future husband of Adda, Foltest's daugther)if you didnt kill adda, of course
-King Henselt of Kaedwen (isnt mentioned in the first game)
A few details to be more excited!
Also Silent Hill 1:
A good world map is a big thing for me. With 2D platformers, I think I have been spoiled by the DKC series and Super Mario Worlds.
Special shout-out for Donkey Kong Country Returns' maps. Absolutely loved them.
How could I forget about:
WoW
YES! My first thought, as well. I remember being ten years old and being so excited to explore the whole island. Of course all the levels are fairly linear, but it was still really cool to visit each of the differently themed areas.damn first post ... please use some quotes on those images
Seriously. It was my first JPRG, and I had NO CLUE there was an overworld. I was completely floored. Midgar already seemed huge on it's own...Leaving Midgar in FFVII was a major "holy shit" moment.
Dereth of Asheron's Call
in a game with very fast movement even moving the indicator on that map took awhile.
6000pixel version. I think I had bigger topographical one before

Still my favorite area of any RPG. Sometimes I just like to sit there and pretend...(Chrono Trigger).
1990s Squaresoft is still master and commander of the world map.I don't think your LTTP picture is big enough.
Final Fantasy VII. You spend all this time in a very steampunk-esque city, battling an environment-killing corporation, and then BAM! Some old soldier named Sephiroth just killed who you thought was the big bad villain, your main character is starting to act unhinged, and it looks like shit is seriously about to get real. And then...you leave the city and realize you still have the rest of the world to visit.

This. Fucking this.
What is That? Fucking That?

Came here to post this.
The best part was that there was NO OTHER MAP. That was it. You had a green circle that showed where you were on that map, but you could run run for a solid few minutes before seeing it budge. No radar that showed every little path, and you can literally get to any place on that map.
So beautiful.
I always loved the Chrono Cross world map.
Some good posts in here, but really guys, you forgot the best map in videogames:
Pictures just don't do it justice. So good.
Dragon Warrior III's map:
The sheer size of the Morrowind map blew me away.
First area in The Secret World MMO:
I still have this cloth map someplace. Amazing place at the time.
Fucking hate that map. It may look cool but it's functionality is awful. Zero help when it comes to finding the right path up a mountain or such, way too cluttered deeper into the game when you've got markers all over the place and if you've got a bunch of active quests, and you can barely zoom out, so sometimes you don't even know what part of the map you're looking at cause you see such a small part of it.skyrim because it is sort of 3d and awesome
Here is a bad example, looks better in game
i wonder why this wasn't posted yet
back than I was like "nah, that can't be only one of over 20 areas, can it?"
Every map for me did. With the music a lot of them seemed foreboding. Especially for the humans during the war, in the future, on the ground here, etc.

Donkey Kong Country 3

Full World Map:
Where's that from (er, as in map version source, not game source), and is there a higher-res version? Some bits of the scale look *seriously* off on that.
Shame it's almost useless because of that. :lol(Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga) One of the simplest looking maps considering how massive the overworld actually is.
Mmm, first map I thought of. Fun times. The sheer size of the Morrowind map blew me away.
What did they do to DKC3?
That's better. I liked the exploration aspect they added to DKC3.
How could I forget about:
WoW
So much this...
