OP, you're making it sound like this is going to destroy your entire life from this point, and then you said you feel like people are following you? This is not a life-altering event but a funny story to tell people. I was expecting the OP to end with a joking tone after the shocker thread title. If you sleep on it and you're still weird and paranoid (and it's not just the adrenaline and chemicals running through your body right after it happened), maybe there's a problem with how you view or deal with situations?

When I was younger I was on a plane that hit turbulence and dropped 1,000 feet in the air before it stabilized. One flight attendant said shed been working for 20 something years and never had that happen. It was scary, lot of screams.

Is it not the case that the chances of a lift crashing is extremely low? They have multiple thick cables and breaks.

really old ones can kill you but you'll rarely if ever come across them outside of europe. modern elevators have 3-4 safety backups and i dont think anyone has died from one dropping. night auditor was right for calling out the OP.

Sorry but a security job and a guy who can't take loud banging noises and starts screaming as soon as it happens doesn't seem like the perfect match.

Sorry. You've gotta give up that avatar.

Like now.

edit; Maybe try meditation though..? Sorry to hear that it freaked you out this bad.

Still though.. the avatar.
lol. I have to admit, I kind of imagined James Bond being absolutely terrorized by a malfunctioning elevator while on his way to a nuclear underground base that is operated by 500 heavily armed mercenaries.

For that split second when the elevator starts shaking or dropping you'd still be scared, because it's unexpected.
Then you can remind yourself about the emergency brakes.

I think I will today. I havent smoked in a while. I'm thinking of giving a complaint about him. He also called me an asshole earlier in the night and told me I was a waste of space and I didnt know how to do my job even though I work at two other hotels. So I won't ever be back there which is a good thing.

I like this sound of this other guy - lets get him on the forum.

OP should look up Otis elevators.

The Otis Elevator Company is the world's largest manufacturer of vertical transportation systems today, principally focusing on elevators and escalators. [1] Founded in Yonkers, New York, United States in 1853 by Elisha Otis, the company pioneered the development of the safety elevator, invented by Otis in 1852, which used a special mechanism to lock the elevator car in place should the hoisting ropes fail.

I'm still trembling in fear and scared shitless. My brain is scattered and all I can think about were the images that were seared into my brain as I thought I was going to die.

I was delivering recepits to rooms at a hotel. I work security and I was filling in for someone else. I was on the 4th floor and pushed the button for the 5th floor in the elevator. As soon as the door closed, the elevator shook very violently like the cables had just been cut. I screamed out in horror as I felt like I was plummeting 4 stories to my certain death. As that was happening, images began burning into my eyes like my death and my family. I screamed more because I wanted to live. I wanted to see my baby boy again. The night auditor heard my screams and yells for help. His response "Is that you yelling like a jackass? Are you fucking retarded?" The elevator never moved a floor but the way it jerked and shooked had me fooled. I can't take loud banging noises or anything like that. I'm weirded out like something is following me. One of my employees banged on the security window to let him in and I couldn't contain myself...I yelled and screamed again. GAF...I'm severely scared...what should I do?

So you want some donation money or something?

What the thread title set up and what actually happened are two completely different things my man - you might wanna look for a new line of work if something like that shook you up so bad.

I was in a little plane that happened to drop for like 3 seconds suddenly just 30 seconds after takeoff at night in the Caribbean - but I laughed it off mainly because of the other passenger reactions because some people managed to put out prayers in that short amount of time so quickly.

Your story? I dunno man.

The part that had me cracking up was when he said he wanted to see his kid again. When you reach that point, there is no doubt in your mind that it's a wrap. The only way it could be even more funny is if he shit his pants.

lol Glad you're ok OP and thanks for the laugh.

OP, calm down, grab a tea and watch how the world doesn't really care for such a mishap. When you are still under the aftereffects of a slight shock best thing to do, aside from chilling with friends.

Consider this: my first long distance travel, and I did it alone, and I went to India of all places.
On my second day, I wanted to go around a parked motorbike in the dark and right behind it was an open sewer into which I fell. I could feel the impact of the fall whipping through my spine. I felt the sting. I checked if I could still feel and control all my limbs. I cut open my knee... in the sewage. My trousers were soaked.
The next weeks I could not really feel safe again in my travel and when I finally met up with a friend in Kathmandu, I bawled my heart out.

It took me almost 2 months of training until my spine moved completely freely again.

Back then, the whole thing was overwhelming. 4 months later it already is an anecdote. So don't feel like this will change much because after all, you simply freaked out because of a missintefpretation of a perception.

Take it as one of life's many harmless pranks on you :p

Thread title should be renamed to, "I screamed like a pussy when the elevator moved and Sentry really actually had a near-death experience. Oh, did I mention, I'm a pussy."

seriously though, Sentry, be safe man.
:lol & thanks.

But seriously OP, it's obvious you overreacted and I don't see how you don't see that in retrospect, and even went so far to make this thread about how you 'almost died'..

Thread Hijack

Yesterday my friends and I were playing Ultimate in the middle of a thunderstorm. We wanted to finish the game before we left. T-Storm was pretty far away anyway...

Then saw lightning strike pretty close. Like a quarter mile away.

NOPE.AVI Got the fuck out of there.
