Shin Megami Tensei IV (3DS) - Minor website update (BGM + Dev team)

Jealous of the Glory that is Johnny Depp
Its not so much as a step back, as a step sideways

Its just a different style.

I thought strange journeys was superb.

nah, it's a step backwards. with 3rd person view in SMT3 the environments were more expansive, kaneko's art had bigger emphasis thanks to this.

and strange journey was a good game, I never said or imply it was bad.

I disagree, there is something magical about the old school look and having a close up on the monsters when you fight them.

I dig the sprites man. I like it better......

It might not be the popular opinion but I thought strange journies was the better game than nocturne

We ever going to get a screenshot? When are they going to unveil this game?

When the devil summoner 3ds demo of it gets leaked

I'm pretty sure they're just going to keep everything under wraps until Soul Hackers is out, which comes with the first trailer.

ducky was saying that one's still quite far off, what kinda ballpark date do you guys put up for a release date? i forget how long on average localization takes after that as well.

I'm starting to get the feeling that it'll release in December or January. I'd previously thought November, but they're cutting it kinda close with the start of promotion. As for localization, it's usually about 6 months.

which game? soul hacker or IV?

I think both will be localized in 2013, not a chance in 2012

My "far off" comment was referring to when the first trailer will be revealed. It's not coming until Soul Hackers comes out at the end of August. Meanwhile they started teasing the SMT1 BGM two weeks ago, and now they're teasing the SMT2 BGM. So they'll need more teases to fill the time until the end of August for the actual reveal.

No one wants a throne you've been sitting on!
Might consider heading down to the TGS on business day. Just to poke around, then leave before it gets stupid crowded. Am just curious to see whats out there.

Then again the trip out there sucks, so depending on the weather will consider.

I really wish Atlus would do a HD devil survivor for PS3/Vita.

Look forward to more info on this though.

Not a fan of First Person stuff really, so hope its third person, DDS/Persona style.

I prefer third person too, with a cast like Devil Survivor 2 hopefully.

I dont see that happening, an hd devil survivor remake.

A remake of the DS 2 on the 3ds, that i can see happening.

Its going to be a dungeon crawler with pokemon elements, and it will be turn based

thats all we can say

You're the best Atlus PR rep ever.

Wasn't asking for a remake, more like a new game in the series with HD sprites, kind of like Disgaea 4 but SMT.

I'm curious if this is going to be First Person or not. Honestly I would like it to be 3rd person like Nocturne, but with an optional first person mode.

That website music gets me super excited

It seems likely that since Atlus already has a functional 1st person dungeon crawler engine for the 3DS they'd just re-use it for SMT IV.

Anybody have an idea of how difficult it is to translate a 1st person dungeon crawler engine for use in a 3rd person game? Is that even possible or would it have to be developed from the ground up like I'm assuming Nocturne's engine was?

I'd take either style really; I just want more SMT. And while I've enjoyed every SMT game I've played, DDS and Nocturne were much more interesting than Strange Journey IMO.

I'm down with either 1st or 3rd for my dungeon crawling needs (and they are needs; raw ugly primal needs), but SMT3's sense of dwarfing scope and perspective is something to cherish and I hope it is not abandoned for this. That, and I have EO4 plus Soul Hackers coming anyways.

New comment on the site:

"Like the Messiah Project in Shin Megami Tensei II, we are trying to create a new saviour (Messiah).

Yeah, 3 1st person dungeon crawls within 6 months from the same dev is a bit much, so I hope SMT4 takes the Nocturne approach if only to mix things up. Actually, I'd love a Nocturne 3DS port down the line too.

Where at? I still have the old one on the site.

If you click the マニアクスチーム text on the right, it plays. I was told that it's been there for a little while, though, so perhaps it's old to you.

Oh subtle, I can't believe I didn't notice. Thanks!

Sounds real good.

Yeah, the next track will either be from SMT:SJ, or they'll be going straight into a SMT4 unveiling in a couple of weeks. We'll see.

So no Kaneko? Are illustrators and art directors different positions?

Kaneko is probably the concept designer and character/demon designer, or even the creative director, depending on how involved he is in the game. The art director is usually in charge of the background design and general art design of the game world. SMT games usually don't have an art director credited for some reason, but I know that in SMT3 Eiji Ishida was the one who conceived the look of the Vortex World, even though he was only credited as one of many "designers" in the initial game. For Maniax he was upgraded to "chief designer", a title he kept for both Raidou games, before directing SMT:SJ.

Thanks for the informative post, that's a relief. Kaneko has been keeping such a low profile lately that I was beginning to get worried.
