Sony "abandons" The Last Guardian trademark [Up: Sony: Game is still in development]

Y'know, I wonder if it's listed as abandoned simply because Sony hasn't "used" the mark in 3 years. Didn't really read the thread, but do we know if there was any affirmative act on their part that was done to cancel the trademark?

Precisely this, all they have to do is file for extension. Someone at Sony messed up and forgot to renew it.

This. Simply this.

They have become beyond incompetent. And if they cant produce games in a timely fasion on current gen, how the fuck will they use next gen? It will be like one game per publisher next gen.
This is one game. It's crazy to equate this to a whole country's production. SotC took ages too, and had serious technical issues.

Missed the freakout.

I doubt it's a name change.

The trademark simply hasn't been used for its registered purpose so it re-enters the public domain. It's essentially expired.

if they are going broke or need another 7 years maybe they should kickstarted?
Than it can be an epic gift to my grandchildren once it comes in the mail.

SotC took a couple years a best. I always thought a lot of the issues with this game were going to be technical, trying to do too much with the hardware as SotC did though

Kick starter? What would that do?

And it hasn't been in development for seven years. I don't think Ueda came up with a new idea he wanted to run with for a year or two after SotC came out

Even if the game was just getting renamed, wouldn't Sony want to hold onto the old name? That way, people looking for The Last Guardian could be easily redirected to the proper game.

This thing is dead. Long dead.

Jesus 14 pages, I've been in the All-Stars thread all day. All these .gifs are blowing up my work imac (it's old and sad).

So... is it really dead now? Can they finally get all those people to move on and make something that can be finished in two goddamn years or something? Maybe the guys from SSM they sent over finally got fed up and said SCREW IT and just canned the project.

What a fucking joke. If it actually ends up getting canned (at least in the West...which I doubt), oh boy...the tears will be delicious. This game will be the paradigmatic monument of the ineptitiude and utter mismanagement of Japanese game development. This and Versus XIII. Sony and Square should be ashamed of themselves.

Maybe they felt the Last Guardian was too smilar to the Last of Us

Maybe they will announce the name has changed in an attempt to make it look like the game has made progress

The best thing about this news is all these amazing and ridiculous gifs that I get to laugh at.

Thank you GAF

Pretty standard really, the game had an epic scope. Four year turn arounds wold be more than acceptable for this company. Seven? Pushing it a lot
This generation it's not even standard, last generation it was far from standard.

Personally, it doesn't bother me how long they take, Ico is still more or less the best game I've ever played.

Yeah this game is just one of many problems facing the japanese gaming industry.
Most of the games at TGS this last couple of years have been published by japanese companies but are western developed titles.
SquareEnix and Capcom are the two companies that really has gone down the drain.

For what's essentially a new IP?

The problem is they are developing a new proprietary engine each time they make a game. It's the same problem with the majority of Japanese developers. Mgs4 took 4 years, the new Fox Engine game even longer.

Ueda spends a lot of time in the conceptualisation phase as well. He doesn't simply go from one product to another with fantastic efficiency like Naughty Dog. For a long time SotC could have been a multiplayer game. In that way he is more comparable to a Ken Levine or Newell in terms of development process. Not that it excuses it, but it is the reason.

So which game comes out first?

The Last Guardian
Final Fantasy Versus XIII
Ni-Oh
Bioshock Infinite (based on that other thread)

wow they abandoned the trademark...Team Ico has been a complete failure this generation.

It's only $159! Someone should buy it now!

why was he banned?
She was banned for referencing some comments made by Ueda about the protagonist of the Last Guardian. To the less-informed it could have been misconstrued as a sexist joke. Regardless, it's negated by the aforementioned comments and the fact she's a woman.

But yeah. Someone should totally buy the trademark.

While similar, I wouldn't say the mechanics are the same.

There is a game on steam, I forget the name, that was developed between when the game was shown and when it came out, that used the mechanic from Fez whole cloth. I could be confused tho.
