New Grand Theft Auto V screens: TRANSPORT

They probably have some GTA5 side stories ready for next gen. It would be smart to release this for current consoles because of the huge install base.

One major problem with GTA IV was the scripting in mission such that targets may be invulnerable until certain conditions are met.

I very much would like an increased freedom to deal with missions in any way I see fit.

A greater emphasis on emergent gameplay over scripted gameplay is my fondest wish for GTA V.

Read my mind. The thing that makes GTA III and Vice City Rockstar's best games is the simple freedom that every mission offered. You'd be given a vague outline for a mission and then the game would just let you take over. With a whole city's worth of stuff at your disposal, so many different weapons and vehicles and potential vantage points and strategies, you'd end up with the most amazing experiences.

San Andreas started the move towards more tightly scripted missions, but at least the subject matter kept things exciting. You could forgive the less open design when you were stealing a jetpack from Area 51 or hijacking a plane in midair. GTA IV's design aesthetic was oppressively realistic, though, and most of the missions were just corridors. Take cover behind this thing, shoot these men in this order, follow this invincible and uncatchable car until you've seen all the scripted events, then you can damage it.

Unfortunately, that's what all 'open world' games are now. They put you in this open world, but as soon as you start a mission it's just as linear as COD or Uncharted. Saint's Row 3, Sleeping Dogs, just variations on the theme. I can't really see Rockstar going back to the old style. I'd love some open mission design in GTA V, with the chance to use that jet as often as possible, but it just doesn't seem likely.

But they made one of the most fun racing games with Midnight Club, fun is what matters. Not "sim". If you want a sim, play one.

You're kind of proving my point here. They should be focusing on fun, not boring sim or realistic stuff. Games like Gran Turismo hit the sim stuff just right and you know what? They're boring as shit to play compared to something like Burnout Paradise (or insert your favorite arcade racer here if you hate that game).

Sorry to come off as rude now but it's not like I go looking for boring models. Can't describe a specific handling model as "fun", as that's extremely subjective and isn't a way to describe anything.

Was not meant that way, no harm done.

What does a road texture mean for the game?

And we could always look at what the screenshots are depicting - bicycles! I miss the pedal bikes from SA, glad to see them making a return.

If anything, it may be indicative of the type of advancements they've made with their engine since the last game. In this case, it looks about as good as GTA4 did which is not really a compliment. I would be solely happy to see an optimized PC version which doesn't need to rely on gangster like thuggery PC's with 580's just to run it at an unstable 60fps. I'm sure I will have a 680 or better by then though. Even with my current 6970, I feel confident about running this at 60fps for the most part. About the same as I run GTA4 with modest LOD settings at this time.

But again, I blame the performance nuances strictly on Rockstar since other open world games look MUCH better now but don't punish your PC like the old GTA4 game from years back.

The driving model is more like Midnight Club than anything. Which is made by R* San Diego...

Bicycles >>> Jets

The main thing that excites me about jets is that they indicate the play area must be BIG.

Jet gameplay seems too silly for the new, better more mature style of GTA.

Definitely GTA V will prioritize the fun .

From Rockstar newswire;
“Hey guys hope everything is good over there in Rockstar. Just a question referring to GTA 4, the game was brilliant and I really enjoyed and still do, but what disappointed me was the lack of planes and jets... Can you tell me why you didn't include them, I'm sure you have a very valid reason?” – via Mouthoff

The city was simply too small for effective and enjoyable flying. It was the first time we made a high definition open world, and it was a massive amount of work to make something on that scale – we simply could not make an environment big enough for planes to work properly. Fear not, they are returning in what is our biggest open world game to date.

They're not boring as shit to play. They're just different. That's a stupid comment seeing as many people enjoy sim racers (including me) and find them 'fun'. I would rather play Forza 4 than any arcade racer, and I do. And in a game like GTA where driving is included I would rather it NOT be a sim-style because it's not what I want to focus on while playing the game. I like the arcady feel of the driving in GTA and I think they pull it off great.

I completely disagree that they were trying for a 'sim-style' of game. It's MUCH closer to MC than any sim racer ... by a long shot. If you've ever played a sim racer you would see that. If you've played a sim racer and still think GTA was trying to pull off a 'sim style' then I don't know what to tell you.

And there we have it ladies and gentlemen, according to Derrick and his superior opinions, anyone NOT playing stuff that goes BOOM OMG JETPACKS WHIIII FLOATY CAR isn't having fun. Anyone playing military simulators, racing games or perhaps even collect stamps aren't doing so because they get stimulated that way and have fun but because it's boring, pure and simple. Some people just love boring stuff.

lol i don't understand thy some people think that this is a next gen game, Rockstar is not dumb, if they launch this game right now on the end of the cycle they would be launching on a HUGE user base that can and will buy the game. And for the date i think this game is coming out on May 2013.

At the same time you want other games be as hardcore and punishing as possible (Hitman, DeusEx). I am confused.

Yeah, but looking at from a general perspective it's still just a road texture - hardly something that Rockstar should be dedicating all their resources to.

By all means criticise the character models or vehicles, or even buildings.

And yeah, I don't get why people think this would be a next gen console title, that'd be a ridiculous decision for Rockstar when the install base for PS3/360 is massive at present.

Edit: And am I the only one who preferred the driving in 4 over the physics of the previous games? Cars felt like they had weight and were great fun to drive around. I actually remember playing a bit of SA/GTA3 round a friend's house after 4 had released and disliked how the cars felt. Floaty driving in open world games is one of my biggest issues actually.

Talking of boring.

Derrick loves quality games like Far Cry 2...

One of the better and more ambitious games of this generation. If Far Cry 3 was as good as this and just removed malaria and eased up on the checkpoints it'd be the best FPS of the generation. We should be asking for more from our games than the dumb shits that make up most FPS games now.

One of the most emptiest, frustrating, badly designed and repetitive games of this gen.

Go Figure.

Those games aren't trying to be ultra realistic. Real life is boring and games shouldn't be trying to perfectly imitate it.

Also games are not created equal. The best things about San Andreas was the crazy missions and that doesn't work as well in a Hitman game where stealth is the key ingredient.

GTA threads always bring out the same group of haters and lovers. It is fun to sit back and watch for once.

We love to criticize games we are excited for and want to be the best they can be. That also pertains to the technical side of things :p

I find it funny that people are trying to derail this thread and talk about GTA V while this is obviously a thread about GTA IVs car handling.

Some of the missions in Vice City and San Andreas were very hard, rescuing Lance and killing Tenpennys partner come to mind.

They should raise the difficulty for this as well as GTA 4 was too easy.

Hahahhaaha, child seat aye, for the protagonist?

Actually, the entire main plot is a deep love drama where our protagonist is trying to get a girl pregnant, the girl in question doesn't know it yet. Oh and he's sterile.

Yeah that would be great.

However no RC helicopter missions. Not a single one or I'll snap the disc and eat a live puppy.

If it's the mission i remember that one has you drive right next to your airbase just at the time you've usually obtained the Apache. Makes the mission very fun.

Dear Rockstar,

please let the guys who optimized MP3 for PC work on GTA V's PC version. I don't want a messy piece of shit like GTA IV again.

In love,

I want RC helicopter missions. And rampages. GTA!

I'm thinking of being induced into a coma until this game comes out. The wait is brutal.

So this is a ps360 game? Can we expect it Spring 2013?

If I had to bet, I'd say all major multiplatform titles will be out until March/April 2013 simply due to the upcoming announcements of either Xbox720 or PS4 or both.

The first time you do the RC missions they are pretty fun, the 20th time not so much. I'd have them in the game though, anything is better then taking an NPC to bowling.

Dear Rockstar,

Listen to this man, but please get another team to deal with the QA. My poor heart won't be able to survive the 2 crash per play session quota.

In dire straights,

I'm hoping that if they're still going for realism that they've learned something from the realism driving and flying mod, but I'd MUCH rather GTAV bring back its arcade roots and make driving less of a chore and more like Sleeping Dogs.

Oh and I'm probably gonna get a bunch of hate for this, but if they do take the arcady route, I'm hoping for unlockable and optional over the top abilities, like jumping from car to car like in sleeping dogs or a crazy hand to hand combat system that makes guns optional (also like Sleeping Dogs)

I think by hard you should say 'inept' they were hard because you were fighting against sloppy weapon controls.

That Lance misson was abysmal. Most action interaction outside a car or bike in the old GTA's was imo rubbish.
