Dark Souls internal rendering resolution fix (DSfix)

Go to NVIDIA control panel and select force alternate frame rendering 2 under SLI rendering mode. The only downside to this is you lose the bloom effect in-game.

I get locked at 15 fps when doing forced AFR 2, but an almost solid 30 fps when using only 1 gpu... makes no sense to me.

I have not noticed this, please let me know if you discover anything more about the issue. You can try running it with disabled DoF override (0) to compare.

Good idea, thanks! I tested the same sunlit area with and without the DoF override, and unfortunately encountered the issue regardless of the setting. I also tried to decrease the internal resolution to 1920x1080 (since I had upgraded it to 1.5x after applying the 0.4 version), but that didn't help either. It works fine when I remove the mod entirely, so I imagine some strangeness is at play otherwise, but I'm afraid I haven't been able to intuit what that strangeness might be.

I took some screenshots of the same area under different settings to demonstrate (please forgive the compression! I used the Steam screenshot manager since I figured fidelity wasn't really important to show off what's happening):

The weird part is that if I pan the camera around so that the sun is out of the frame, I can sometimes get the bloom and lens flare to reappear when panning back, though at varying levels of intensity (though that might be because of the HDR effect - it seems random compared to the stock game):

I didn't notice the issue when playing with the 0.3 version of the mod last night, though I do recall admiring the sunlight and lens flare upon reaching the Undead Burgh.

All in all, it's a very small issue that doesn't seem to be widespread, so no worries. Dang, even with the compression, the difference in fidelity between the modded and un-modded shots is still immediately obvious. Thanks again, Durante!

Works with 16:10 resolution too. From bad port to almost perfect port with mods in just a couple of days. Oh, PC gaming.

You can download the fix for non 16:9 resolution here btw. Make sure you let the program update to get the dark souls fix.

Im getting crashes with this tool, it works but it crashes the game after 5 seconds, it looks so good at 16:10!!!! :(

Ok, finally got my issues sorted out. (FRAPs fps overlay was fucking things up then I realized I had left on verbose logging and the game chugged as a 650 dsfix.log was written out in a minute or so). Think I have it and I must say, well done, Durante. It's one thing to see screens but to see it on one's own setup is something else. Never thought this would look so good.

Really have to admit I'm surprised at how quickly Durante was able to accomplish all this magic.

Running the game at internal res 3840x2400, DoF 2160, at 2560x1600 with the widescreen fix is really nice. Totally made the game a must have for me.

30fps doesn't bother me as much as I thought it would.

This is what the fix does on my system ha.

Sorry if it's a super common or obvious issue. GPU is a Radeon HD 6950. If I enter the options or inventory menu the picture actually temporarily starts taking up the entire screen while that's open.

Edit: Ohgod. I'm good at missing things. Much appreciation to the scholars below.

What are your .ini settings and in-game graphic settings?

I'm going to wait a little bit to try the based Durante fix (until he irons all the kinks). However my question is how do you downsample? I've been reading the thread, and I get that people are multiplying the native resolutions of their monitors and then "downsampling." Is that a setting in the .ini file or do I need another program for that?

1) For most people (unless you have integrated graphics) there are no real glitches resulting from the patch as is.

2) You just edit the rendering resolution in the .ini no other program needed to downsample.

I am so happy with what you have done Durante. Simply amazing. I was expecting the assets to be horrible, but your fix really shows the amazing work From Soft has put into the greatest game ever made. A huge thanks from a big DS fan. Beer is on me!

Played this for an hour or so and my framerate is really all over the place. Got up to the Undead Burg and frequent dips into the mid 20s. Running at a native 1920 x 1080, DOF set at 1080, in game AA off. I feel like my system should be able to handle it pretty consistently, even without any overclocking (i5 2500k, GTX 670 4GB, 16GB of RAM) but maybe I'm just being naive.

Something is definitely wrong.

I'm downsampling at 1.5x and DOF 1080 on a worse computer and I get a constant 30fps.

Try turning off any graphics overlay programs or any unused programs. Fraps also beats up some people's config for some reason.

Wake up, find out Durante made the world a better place, laugh and laugh and laugh...

edit:
JJB wants to have your babies

Darn game, the maximum fps is 30 outside of gameplay; while playing the peak is 15 fps shown by Fraps. Is Dark Souls unplayable on Nvidia laptops?

What should I change in this file, Darksouls.ini?

[DisplaySetting]
WindowMode = 0
[DisplaySettingWindow]
Left = 0
Top = 0
Width = 1920
Height = 1080
[DisplaySettingFullScreen]
Width = 1920
Height = 1080
ColorDepth = 32
Format = 7
RefreshRate = 60
[DisplaySettingFilter]
Blur = 0
Antialiasing = 0
ForceDisableAA = 0

Edit: Sorry for multiple post, but the game does not play very smoothly :(

I really cannot believe this is happening. Is their a neogaf hero award somewhere? I don't think I've seen anyone do this much for the community before.

I can't seem to tame the aliasing in this game. I've forced AA in the Nvidia Control Panel, but I still get scenes like this:

(Old content spoiler of a later boss, you have been warned)
http://i.minus.com/ibi4GRzo290zop.bmp

Note the aliasing around the arches.

Is there something else I should do? Internal res is 5760x3240, default DOF.

(Thanks for the fix, Durante.)

Has anyone made it all the way through using the patch?

I'm thinking about purchasing the game, but only if I can play all the way through with this patch.

I've done all content, except for the final boss of the game, without issue.

What could be the reason that the game suddenly doesn´t get more than 15 fps.
With version 3 i had 30 almost locked and with version 4 even if i set dov to 0 it doesn´t go up.

That shouldn't happen. Are you sure you are using the same settings and are in the same area? Also make sure that you haven't accidentally increased the log level.

v4 performance with DoF set to 0 should be exactly the same as v3.

You the man, Durante. I had no interest in the PC version (I have had it on PS3 since release) but once I read about your fix, I had to see it for myself. It's like playing a new game! I kicked you some money via Paypal. Thank you!

From the feedback on that interview...

Auctopus says:
At least now PC elitists will stop complaining and enjoy this masterpiece.

Which is why I thought the best tag would be a hyperlinked: Entitled to 23 Minutes of Fame. Maybe nobody else finds that amusing, but I certainly do.

Is there any way to remove the widescreen bars when using a 4:3 resolution? My resolution is 1600x1200.
I've tried to force the resolution in the .ini; but the screen flickers and doesn't launch pass the NamcoBandai logo.

If DOF set to 2160 is wrong, I don't want to be right. The higher DOF seems to have tamed the jaggies as well (which I guess were artifacts caused by the blurring?).

I guess it looks just as good as the BMP did. Thanks for the tip.
