I played OOT for the first time on 3DS this year. Right after finishing Skyward Sword. Previously I had played a bit of OOT up until about the time you get to be adult Link.

I don't know what the N64 version of the water temple was, but the 3DS version at least was a brilliant temple, probably on par with Ancient Cistern in Skyward Sword.

I found it a bit difficult to know what to do/where to go, and had to resort to a guide for a couple of things towards the end (eg fire arrows and the gauntlet or hookshot for the very last dungeon).

I really regret not playing the game back in the day, as it was an incredible game though.

Also, OoT's horse riding is total ass :/ The game definitely hasn't aged too well

the only time it's troublesome is when you're set to jump a fence and it gets stuck instead. Rest of horse back controls just like you'd expect it to.

And the rest of the game holds up incredibly well. Especially now that's 30fps

Some of the updates really made the Water Temple easier:

-Underwater walking speed increased singnificantly.
-Added color patterns so the player won't get lost tryng to change the level water.
-Modified a cutescene so the player will notice a hidden path in the middle tower. (This hidden path is really hard to come by in the original version)

Edit: I remember a gaffer saying in the OOT OT that he/she didn't even need the (equip spoilers?)
blue tunic
to finish the temple.

I guess as a first time through the temple I have to admit I found it to be good fun to play through. There were quite a few times that I was stuck thinking of where to go next or what to try, but that is the same as any good dungeon. It never became a chore or an ordeal like what I hear the original version of it did at times.

It's so weird seeing people play OoT for the first time, I remember when I got it for Christmas (gold cartridge!) and beat all 3 kid dungeons on Christmas day. I finished it right before school started again, then I immediately started it back up. One of my favorite games of all time, especially the Shadow and Spirit temples.

I hope they re-do Majora's Mask, someday, I know they were considering it, it'd be a great pick for my tastes. That's the one I really want an excuse to replay.

As long as they just nix the Owl Statues and allow you to do a quicksave anywhere, I'd be all for it. I wonder if they'd include a special "3D" dungeon like the Color Dungeon in Link's Awakening DX? It'd be a cool optional dungeon, and would kinda fit with the really "out there/psychedelic" style of Majora's Mask.

I'm playing through Link's Awakening for the first time right now. True story. I mean I've played it before, even on a prior 3DS, but I'm actually giving it my undivided attention. So far it's good as expected, I'm in the second dungeon and am surprised that I'm not just breezing right through it. The challenging is pretty good and the puzzles are a lot more natural.

as long as you have a decent amount of hearts the tunic is pretty much pointless.

The water dungeon isn't difficult just tedious and boring. It just happens to be more tedious and boring than the rest of the game thanks to how slow it is to do everything.

I borrowed (then lost...) my uncle's copy, but it took me forever to get past the second dungeon because I didn't know what a Stalfos, Keese, or Pols Voice was, only that I had to kill them in a certain order. Also, the Tal Tal Mountain theme is one of my favorite Zelda songs next to Gerudo Valley.

Ocarina of Time definitely has not aged well in some regards, such as how clunky horse riding feels. I played it for the first time back in the day as an adult, and tend to feel I don't have rosy childhood memories of the game. The 3DS version is the definitive version, hell, just fixing the frame rate improves how the game plays immensely. But it's not the godgame.

Though people playing it for the first time do need to keep in mind the context surrounding the game: it was essentially the first expansive, robust 3D action adventure title on game consoles. It's the game that invented "Z lock". Considering that Nintendo had basically no map for reference, the fact that they achieved what they did is pretty incredible, and has definitely contributed to the game's legendary status.

Not sure why we're talking about OoT, but I will say that I had repeatedly attempted to play it since the 90s and always stopped a few hours in. Nothing to do with the game, really, I just didn't begin to like Zelda games until the mid 00s.

Anyway, when OoT 3D was released, I enjoyed it quite a bit (and yes, I beat the game, finally), although of the 3D Zelda games I have played -- all except Majora's Mask -- it is probably the one I enjoyed second to least. Wind Waker actually sits at the bottom by being a game I merely "liked". I should give it another chance though.

I would say it has aged very well, as it still is mechanically better than pretty much any comparable game today.

Nope, the 3DS XL screen is cooler than the dsi xl screen. At least with mine. The saturation in 1:1 and scaled is the same on my 3DS XL as well. Both are muted and give a darker image than the DSi XL. I will take pictures when I get a chance... though I'm not sure it will show this properly. But, again, with mine the difference is plain.

I was referring to the DSi screen, not the XL. 1:1 mode on the 3DS XL is pretty much identical in size to the DSi. And when I play games in 1:1 mode on my 3DS XL, there's no muting of colors.

As for OOT, agreed that it hasn't aged well. But then again, I'm one of the few that actually prefer portable Zeldas on my gaming portable. I didn't love everything about the two DS Zeldas, but I did love them as Zelda experiences. I hope we get another in that style on the 3DS.

I really want Resident Evil Mercenaries for my XL. I'm going abroad to study this semester (next week), so I don't really want RE Revelations or OoT until I come back. I'm just looking for pick up and play games. What do you guys say?

Well, I've officially been super-sized; the sultry seductive look of the red XL finally won me over. The transfer from my OG 3DS to the XL was relatively smooth (took about 10-15 minutes) barring the extra prompts - mostly DSi Ware related - that Nintendo's "How-To" video didn't mention. I made educated guesses on the right actions for 'em and in the end, everything seemingly copied alright. My Mii Plaza stuff (puzzles, Find Mii, etc.) was intact, my save data for the games I tried was present, and I could play my Ambassador games just fine.

The increased pixel density/contrast threw me off a little at first, but after playing for a bit, I didn't really notice it anymore. I also noticed the infamous "yellow" tint of the screen at first, though it only seemed to exist during the transfer process. I'm not sure if my OG settings corrected it or if it's only within certain menus, but the background of the top screen when navigating about the home menu icons is white as white could be for me.

Ultimately I'm satisfied with the upgrade. Mainly, it was nice being able to play it for longer than 5 minutes without getting hand cramps. :)

I believe the word you want there is "decreased".

That and without OoT, we wouldn't have Darksiders 1 and 2 which would be terribly sad.

Any good pouches/sleeves for the 3DS XL? I saw the one linked on Club Nintendo but I think I want one with a little bit of padding or something

Resident Evil Mercenaries is available for 3DS.

It's my most played game and it's awesome. It adds RPG skill leveling and unlockable weapon/skills to the fray. The combo timing and aid really works well on the platform. I still play it to this day!

If anyone plays and look for Tri[cell] (me ^_^)

I don't undestand how horse riding is clunky. Turns are exactly how a horse should turn and starting and stopping should work as well.
Game also has, to this day, fantastically designed dungeons, amazing cinematography, and has the best pacing in the series.
The understanding of 3d space is also as good as any contemporary game

It's not the best Zelda in any individual parameter, but cohesively, it's one of the most wonderful games ever crafted.

Exactly my thoughts. OoT doesn't hit the highs of some of the other 3D games (MM side quests, TP dungeons) but it doesn't hit the lows either (MM's/WW's lack of dungeons, WW's Triforce quest, TP's shitty opening). It's definitely the most "even" 3D Zelda. Held up just fine on my 3DS replay.

Oh man, it's criminal just how amazing Link's Awakening is. I remember playing it back when it first came out -- when I was 10 or so -- and it was just as awesome and rewarding when I replayed it last year on the 3DS Virtual Console.

I have so much love for Link's Awakening. Enjoy -- it really is something special. There's no Zelda game quite like it in terms of scenario, story, and characterization, except for maybe Majora's Mask.

So, using the little pads on the bottom of the original 3DS cradle, I have made this to fully protect the XL from any future scratches:

Makes the top pop up a little bit, but it's not too bad. No scratches yet, but this was easy to do and I'd rather be safe than sorry :)

I'm sorry but that looks really bad. And dirt/dust will get in there.

I suppose to me, almost all video game horse riding just ends up feeling like you're driving a heavy, slow to turn truck, even if there's the animation of a horse occupying the space that is really just at truck.

Shadow of the Colossus is pretty much the only game I've played in which horse riding actually feels like horse riding, and thus is interesting and exciting for it.

In the pantheon of Zelda 'vehicles', the horses are not my favorites. Actually, the boat in TWW is the best I think. It really is like sailing a boat, and is both relaxing and adventurous. Flying in Skyward Sword is actually fine, even if some folks have trouble holding a wiimote level. It's just that the skyworld is terribly underdeveloped so there's nowhere to go on the bird.

omg this thing is amazing

Also protip: the bag it comes in is perfect for use as a screen protector. Carefully tear the bag at the seams, and then tear it in half. Put one of the pieces between the screens when not in use, and keep the other as a backup.

Magic!

Nice idea, I might do that while I wait to receive the screen protectors from Amazon
Now I just need to figure out where I left it. :(

I noticed a micro scratch in my screen (not related to the bottom screen), it's barely visible when in the light, when playing is unnoticeable, but my OCD is killing me here.

Is far-fetched to say Nintendo have been intentionally gimping their OG handhelds lately to make people double dip? I remember the OG DS being pretty dire as well. I've been enjoying the XL immensely but it comes down to the original one being so poor that anything decent would have been a large improvement. Sony's first two handhelds have both been amazing aesthetic wise from the very first version.

I don't think any company thinks this way, especially when they have competition in the market. It is most likely simply a matter of them creating a design, then making something better after feedback/thought.

I'm playing it for my second time now (first on the 3DS, and first in color), and I'm loving it as much as I did when I first played it. Only Zelda I love more is Adventures of Link.

Looking forward to playing Oracle games on VC.

The colors aren't washed out on the 3DS XL in 1:1 mode. There's no way I'm keeping two variants of the DS any longer when one does the trick. If the DS game looks bad on the 3DS XL stretched, I merely go 1:1 and then I get essentially the same thing a DSi user sees, without needing to buy another DS. If you must play every game on a screen the size of an XL, then I get why you'd want both, but personally I'm fine switching between stretched and 1:1 as need be.
1:1 does indeed look much better and for me it's probably the best way to play a DS gamexon the 3DS XL. However I started wondering yesterday if I should take it back and get a DSi XL since I will primarily be playing DS games on it. I still don't know if I made the best decision. I want to play in a big screen and I cannot stand that the 3DS puts that blurry filter on the games. I wish we had a firmware fix or even an option in the settings for a filter or not. But since it is Nintendo you know it will never be so.

Sad thing is I am still debating on getting a DSi XL. I just need to figure out if I can live with the ugly filter or play them in 1:1 mode. My wife did say she liked the 3DS so I would probably have to go buy a DS XL instead of being allowed to return it. But is it worth it? I am so anal that it might be but it is a foolish
expense since I just bought a 3DS XL!

Nintendo was unable to power a larger screen on the 3DS. It was only as they got new power saving abilities they were able to incorporate that into the design and power two larger screens.

Also the PSP had a heck of a lot of complaints if I remember rightly about the initial models.

After this year, expect Nintendo to launch two sizes of their next portable, one Lite and one Large next generation.

It's been a few years, but I remember thinking Agro was way too lose and weird and didn't really liked how he controlled lol

Does anyone else have an issue where they can feel a slight separation between the bottom faceplate and the system on the left side? It's easy enough to snap that side of the faceplate on and off but when I snap it back on it still doesn't rest completely snug against the system and it's been irritating me lately. I'm thinking about applying a thin coating of super glue in between the plate and the system to keep it from moving. It's a really minor issue though, I was just wondering if anyone else had noticed it.

Besides that I'm loving my XL so far, it's a great upgrade from the original.

Well, all you can do is weigh the value of upcoming 3DS games you might be interested in against how important DSi vs DSi XL screen sizes (or the upscale blur, if you dont mind it) are.

I do kind of miss my Bronze DSi XL, but I mostly loved it for it's aesthetics. It's nice to only have one unit to do it all, though, especially in games where the slide pad is a boon.

I'm not a collector, or a hoarder in any way shape or form, I kind of jettison anything as long as I'm done with it because I don't like physical gaming clutter, but I may consider buying another bronze XL in the future just for the sake of it. Really did like that unit, wish the 3DS XL's could have colors and designs like that.

But the DSiXL throws DS games onto a larger screen, like the 3DSXL, too, which creates a less sharp image.

If I were a DS purist, I'd find a DSLite: games look the best on the screen and also have GBA backwards Compatability.

I'd recommend enjoying the Backwwards Compatability and keep the 3DSXL. That way you can still play the old DS games, but are also future proof when and 3DS games arrive that you want. There are a lot of good 3DS games, now, too.

No it doesn't.
It does the same thing the 3DSXL does to 3DS games....which is makes them less sharp, due to a larger screen and it makes them appear washed out and less sharp compared to the DSi and Lite. In the same way the 3DSXL has the effect coming from DSXL to 3DSXL.

I'm pretty much agreed with this. Loved my bronze DSi XL, but I much prefer a single system for all of my portable gaming. The moment I got my 3DS XL, I jettisoned both my DSi XL and standard 3DS.

The image quality for DS games on the 3DS XL is a bit weaker comparatively to my bronze DSi XL, but it pales when it comes down to using the slide pad for certain games. I really disliked the dpad on the DSi XL, games like Dragon Quest gave me horrible cramps for long-term play. I can never go back after testing many of these DS titles on the 3DS XL. The hazy stretched pixel filter in full screen is noticeable at times, but far preferred to losing slide pad comfort. In most cases the effect is easily ignored, but I find Dragon Quest 9 to be an ideal reference game, as the image quality noticeably suffers from 1:1 to full unlike many other DS games I have tried. Ultimately it's no contest though, the slide pad comfort(in that game especially) FAR outweighs the blemishes the pixel scaling dumps on the player.

1:1 mode is not that great though anyway. Yes, it carries the crispness and clarity over from what you would expect on a standard DSi, but it's impractical as I find the borders distracting and the smaller screen space not worth the trade-off.

Just bought Cave Story 3D for my brand new (silver) 3DS XL, and I must say they seem like a perfect match.
Everything is so tiny in this game, playing it on the original 3DS must have been a real pain.
