Steam Greenlight: 1000 games and counting, more Greenlit every few weeks

It's a really great idea, and Steam have done well to integrate this.

However, i get the feeling it will just be "get your twitter followers to approve your new game, regardless of how good it looks or sounds"

Ultimately it's still Valve's decision on what is available for sale on Steam. If a scenario like what you described happens for a game that is obviously crap then they'll strike it down, I'm sure.

I guess, but then it really defeats the point of the whole thing, surely? :p

Were there rumors about Steins;Gate or something?

I have actually personally tried to convince them to bring the game out in English with us doing the localization. They seem pretty close minded about the whole idea though.

I think there were, but no idea if they were reliable or not.

And that sucks. 5pb and/or Nitroplus should let you guys do it. It has such potential on Steam and could actually get on there unlike 85% of VNs.

It really seems like a way for Valve to have a general idea of which game is actually worth it. They probably have some fancy way to track which game is getting the most votes.

The point is to help Valve become aware of what customers want. They've said they get countless submissions all the time and that there isn't enough time to go through them, and that's on top of the rip-offs and other crap that they'd have to go through.

If a bunch of people voted in favor of something that would be consider mediocre to you and I, but the developer manage to get a bunch of people to vote for it, then it may appear. But if another developer tried doing that with their lazy Angry Birds clone then I'd hope Valve would see through that and push it aside.

It might prove to be more efficient in the future for both Steam and the users if there's some standard in place that allows one to submit a game and cut down on the pranking/garbage.
At a minimum, a game info form to fill out (with a description of a certain length) and at least one trailer plus a minimum number of screenshots. To weed out those who are pranking from those who are at least semi-serious. Or at least make it more time consuming to prank. If they fill the form out with gibberish --> permaban.

Strictly speaking, I wouldn't think so, but then if your game is publisher-backed, you shouldn't need it.

I can't really see why it wouldn't be indie-only. The amount of indie submissions must be a mountain compared to the amount of studio submissions. It's not like Steam Licensing is going to go "I didn't know a new Darksiders was coming out".

Greenlight is basically for games that haven't received any publisher backing to be released on Steam.

Theoretically a developer Greenlight submission, if successful enough, could convince the publisher to go ahead and submit the game to Steam.

I'd say it's more an extension of Valve staying in tune with what their community wants, rather than an excuse for them to do less work.

It's both.

"Excuse" in this case translates into "we don't have time to focus on both big and small games".

When TF2 made enough money on its own to go F2P, nobody said "it's just an excuse so they don't need to pay for the servers".

It's convenient, and it benefits both sides.

Sure, the service obviously exists for indies, but my point is that it's possible for publisher-backed games to be added to the Greenlight pool, but that would just add an unnecessary extra (and potentially slippery) step. If your game is supported by a publisher, there's no tangible reason to use Greenlight over the typical submission process.

When you put it that way, I agree completely. There are enough indie games out there that reaching out to the community is both the most efficient and fan-friendly way to do it. In a certain sense, we've become another one of Valve's cabals.

Another potential downside is Big Business Hate.

"Let's tweet all our friends to downvote Call of Duty 10/Dragon Age 6/Resident Evil 45"

... no...

Call of Dragon Evil 2.

More ways than one, my friend.

More ways than one.

Haha, mark my words, there will be a Japanese-developed game with that name at some point. :p If I had to guess, it'll be a Capcom game.

I wonder if they are going to lower the vote limit. The highest pecentage for any of the game I've voted for is 5%.

There is no real goal at the moment. The bar is set unreasonably high so Valve can gather the voting data after some time and then determine a reasonable goal.

This is silly, 416 different games to vote for. Who can be bothered to sort through all that and find content they like? Would work a lot better if it was 5 a day, top one goes through etc. At least that way it's compelling to vote.

It also doesn't help that some titles repeat and cause others to not show up while browsing through them all.

Fly'n, Routine, and Dream are the cream of the crop from what I've looked through so far.

NEStalgia is a bit of a dark horse, but it could be amazing if they do it right.

Well, developers are encouraged to get the word out themselves. Get their existing fanbases excited and talking, word of mouth and all that.

It does need some sorting options though to feature the most popular and "trending" (that'd be like ones with the most surge in the past day or two), though.

it wouldn't be so bad if there was an option to turn off the ones you already checked out (aka if you visit the page they won't show up again)

I am just checking out the RPGs and co op games... there are games in the other genres I would be interested in but given how they seem to randomize each page to some degree I could likely go through every page 3 times and still not see all of the current games :/

Vote and they're taken off.

honorless

We don't have "get out of jail free" cards, but if we did, she'd have one.
I'm probably more amenable to console throwback RPGs than most, but it frustrates me that so few of them can come up with a better hook than "NOSTALGIA!!!" or "We're lampshading the same ancient JRPG tropes every other parody does!" You know, you could take inspiration from Earthbound or Lufia or Megami Tensei or SOMETHING outside of Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest and Chrono Trigger...

I'm glad I actually looked into NEStalgia a bit because it seems like a lot of effort has been put into that game even if I have no interest in MMOs. Seems like it deserves to be on Steam more than Revelations or Bad Rats, anyway. But damn, what a crap title.

Using my criteria of games that are

- Already released, in beta, or very close to being in beta
- Look professional
- Were not fucking made in fucking RPG Maker fuck

Here's my favorites list:

http://steamcommunity.com/id/VALIS/...yfavorites&p=1&sortmethod=alpha&numperpage=30

Mind you, there are still like 150 games I haven't rated yet so I very likely missed some good ones, but a lot of them looked like crap at a glance.

what are you using as criteria to see if the game is out/almost/beta for those games that have limited writeups?
