The iconic character Lightning.

YOU WILL CONSIDER HER ICONIC. WE WILL KEEP FORCING HER INTO EVERYTHING UNTIL YOU DO

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
So the game will be timed and you have to be careful of your actions? Eww....

The time aspect has been the most worrying for me since I heard about the game. I'm still not really sure if I'm going to like it. I didn't like Majora's Mask because of it.

Was it the ongoing tension of having a timer tick down, I guess? Or did you just not enjoy the mechanic as a whole? The former was an issue for me when it first released, but I enjoy it now.

I don't know. The countdown system sounds simultaneously brilliant and completely off putting.

I definitely don't see anything brilliant or off putting about it now (although I'm not watching the stream either, so I might have missed some things), but I hope that they can use it to make the game more interesting as a whole. Even during slower portions of the game, you'll have to consider the countdown and how your actions affect that. The best RPGs always have strong, unique mechanics that make otherwise slow portions of the game interesting and fun regardless. Hopefully this will function in that way.

The game is actually called "Lightning Returns"? And the subtitle is Final Fantasy XIII? That makes as much sense as if we called the second Indy movie "Temple of Doom: Indiana Jones". They're really trying to milk all the money they can out this engine aren't they? Or trying to compensate for the money being poured into Final Fantasy Versus XIII.

Wait until they announce Lightning Returns 2: Final Fantasy XIII-2.

Square is so lucky they bought Edios.

The goddess farron is back!!! Im the happiest person ever right now. So fitting for her to be pushed as the main reason for people to buy the game, such an awesome character. And they are actually making her more badass than she already is.

God Bless Square Enix!

They heard my prayer when i asked them never to remake the good final fantasy 's and instead give us two sequels to the one no one liked.

Can we mod her model to turn her into Adult Link instead? :lol

I like the idea, but it seems they're ditching the only good thing the XIII games had. The battle system worked well because of the different party members and roles. This just sounds like another action RPGs. Also, this seems suspicisly like Versus XIII. I don't want Versus XIII to become this, but I wouldn't be surprised either.
Well, yeah, that's what I was expecting. I was hoping they'd develop CSB even further, but I guess they only want to do this game with one character with more customization for said character.

It has some neat ideas so far, but... I dunno. I hope they release battle footage soon because my interest is in negative integer territory.

No kidding, but that doesn't answer the question either :p I assume that it was planned, and that the high-cost nature of modern game development made it rather enticing to focus their FF output this gen around a single world.

oh yeah, definitely. it's a great way for them to get away with reusing assets, rather than rebuilding mostly new content for a new numbered game. i don't think it was their initial plan though, but a culmination of various factors and considerations during development. Stuff like dev costs as you said, and the frequency of their mainline software output.

You guys are not even giving it a chance. LOL...
lol, better safe than sorry.

The countdown in Majora's Mask was a big part of why the game was so great. I'm not sure if I trust it here though. I'll probably be tempted to buy it regardless. :/

I'm not exactly teeming with excitement over this.

I haven't been interested in FF since before 13 and the only 2 I care for are either not coming out here (FFType-0) or are taking forever to make (vsXIII).

I will keep an open mind but it's not looking good.

It's a shame, though, really. There was something really special about expecting 3 unique final fantasy worlds every generation. Though I didn't experience FF1 in the US, when I played FF2/4 at release, I was hooked. I was always really excited to see what would come next, up to and including the release of 13. I've really been completely uninterested with everything else they've been doing this generation, however. I would completely support a move to handhelds if it meant a return to 3 worlds per generation, to be honest. I'm sure I'm in the minority here, however.

At this point I'm pretty sure Square Enix bought Eidos so they'd still be able to publish awesome games while their Japanese studios did LOTS AND LOTS OF DRUGS.

Forgive me if I don't exactly trust Square-Enix to pull off a difficult design decision like a countdown mechanic as well as Nintendo did out of hand.

Especially not THIS Square-Enix.
