Well there is nothing wrong with people not wanting to see that side of her. The problem is when people say it's false and completely goes against her character when it doesn't. Hell she was a much bigger badass in Other M than she was in any of the previous games when it came to the action anyway.

Whole-heartedly agree. I thought when it came to some of the grapples and such, you really saw how vicious and dangerous she could be. For the record, I loved Other M. I would have personally dialed back the times that she said "The baby" by maybe about 20 though.

Hopefully it's Metroid Prime 4 or something not totally generic.

I'm fine with something generic, even without that latest level designer they've brought in, they've got the best level designers in the business. The only level designers that come close to their talent are those with Valve. At the end of the day level design and enemy design make or break FPS and TPS games, you can have the most generic plot and gameplay elements in a game but if the level design and enemy design is good enough it will put it streets ahead of the other competition in the same genre.

I never understood the concept of heroines wearings heels. Aren't they like, incredibly uncomfortable to run in?
Sure, but what does it matter? They don't have to be comfortable as long as they look good (and no, "but they don't" doesn't count - personal opinions and stuff). And it obviously makes no difference to a 3D model. Practical wardrobes are extremely rare in games anyway, regardless of gender.

I would never get into that argument on the internet. But that was my assumption always. We never saw Samus internalized, I think it is rather interesting that sometimes she is afraid or nervous, but still pulls of some bad ass stuff. She is a hero. But human. I think people imagined a female Rambo complete with one liners. "You got it baby" as an alien explodes into pieces.

About the 13th September conference

The bottom part of this message posted 4 months ago is still relevant, for major third-parties.

Meaning they will discover huge aspect(s) of the Wii U the same time we do, probably during this conference. To my surprise, they are still left in the mist for important areas of the system to this date.

It could point toward different scenarios:

1) Those aspects (including online plan, the OS, the dashboard, etc.) will be innovative to a point Nintendo wanted to keep those secrets as long as possible.

2) Nintendo were/are polishing all these points until very recently so they didn't have the time to implement them in the latest SDK, etc.

3) A combination of both (the likely one).

That is ridiculously secretive. Do we have any records of MS and Sony sealing their devkits in a similar manner?

I don't really mind about the story, the dialogue. I just want good backtracking and some catchy music. The atmosphere comes whit these elements... That's Metroid for me. And that's the problem about Other M: it sucked as a Metroid game.
The story was ok, the dialogue was nothing memorable, and I liked Samus' reaction with Ridley.

I guess so, but isn't that -- by this point-- kind of status quo for Nintendo? I mean, from my understanding, developers didn't even know the 3DS had a 3D screen until like, the last minute? So I wouldn't be totally surprised if the Wii U had some crazy feature that no one knew about until the last minute.

(Excited...!)

Please let Retro's new game be a platformer.

I'm actually kind of anticipating a "sizzle reel" of games for 2013 to get us excited. Not that they'll tell us MUCH but I think they have to have some sense of the disappointment people felt about their quarter by quarter focus on information and I think they can/will SHOW us some more games even if they don't tell us much beyond the images.

Obviously, Nintendo thinks they really have something going on that'll get people interested, and they think that making it known before the general start of advertising could cause the competition to make counter-announcements.

I'd be disappointed if it were something that's already leaked, like NFC figurines, that rumoured card thingy, or the universal remote stuff.

Such as Donkey Kong country returns?

I would be OK with that, and since it has been very successful - it sold maybe even better than Metroid prime but I should have to check it out - it sounds a very reasonable bet.

I'd love DKCR2, Metroid 2(.5D) remake, or an original platformer. I know no matter what genre, they'll blow me away, so my hope is it that they make a game in my favorite genre. :)

Yeah, not setting myself up for disappointment. There'll be actual news from whatever Nintendo is doing in Japan, but from this, I don't expect anything much software-wise beyond announced titles and Black Ops II. Anything more than that will be a pleasant surprise.

No thanks to Retro dong a platformer. Nintendo makes enough platformers, I want something different from them. DKCR was an utter waste of their talent.

An action game... something with some depth. Maybe an ARPG.

Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about Rayman Legends Wii U.
Well, the secretive stuff cannot be integral to the gaming experience if it has been kept a secret this long to the majority of the industry. My guess is that it only effects OS stuff or some other console feature that doesn't involve games.

To say that DKCR was a "waste" of their talent is a blasphemous abuse of the amount of ingenuity that went into that game. It also presupposes an inferiority of platformers, as if to say that it takes little talent in making them. It also directly opposes the views of many at Retro Studios who actively wanted to make a DK game. You also seem to suggest that DKCR has no depth, which is ludicrous. I understand the sentiment, but DKCR was by no means a "waste"d effort.

Nintendo probably would have gone scorched Earth on everyone if something important were leaked.

Hahaha. Oh god. Given that Miyamoto is apparently a slightly nicer version of Steve Jobs, I can only imagine what would happen. I would fear for his employees. Seriously though, fingers crossed that there's "one more thing."

Prediction time:

On Thursday, we'll get the release date for the console in the main territories (Japan, US, EU), and possibly the price (although they may wait a couple more weeks for that), along with pack-in details. If the reported pricing details are correct, then the bundles are as follows:

$249 - Console and gamepad, no game
$299 - Console, gamepad and Wiimote/nunchuck, Nintendoland packed in
$349 - Console, gamepad and Wiimote/nunchuck, Nintendoland packed in, with 250GB HDD and Wind Waker HD download code

The games on show will mainly be from third parties, although they'll of course show clips of NSMBU, Nintendoland, Pikmin 3, etc. Expect Black Ops 2, Warfighter, Madden, etc., and possibly one or two other multiplats that haven't been confirmed for Wii U yet (nothing major though).

We'll get details on the online service, with a demonstration most likely involving Black Ops 2. We'll get info on the console's "Entertainment" functionality, which should include a unified interface for streaming services like Netflix and Hulu, alongside some sort of social component. It's also possible that the console will allow you to watch streaming content on the TV while someone plays a game on the gamepad screen.

Nintendo will talk about the Virtual Console service on the Wii U, and will confirm that you can transfer your VC games over from the Wii. We'll also get confirmation that you can play VC games on the gamepad screen, and that Gamecube games will start to appear on the VC on Wii U. They'll announce a line of "HD Classics", the first of which will be the aforementioned Wind Waker, which will temporarily be exclusive to people buying the $349 bundle.

We're not going to get any earth shattering new game announcements, but it should be a decent conference to pass the time until launch.

What about the option of Wii Remote, Nunchuk, and sensor bar? Those could be in the higher priced skus, right? Somebody a few days ago suggested that the cheapest sku would be an "Upgrade Pack" for Wii users in that fashion, where they bring over their accessories (I guess this couldn't go as far as the power supply, since the Wii U probably needs a bigger one, right?

On Retro's part? It was a waste of their time. They could have made more complex games in different genres, where DKCR could have been done by any number of teams within Nintendo or under Nintendo's web and done it just as well.

It really bugs me that they'd go from making Metroid Prime, one of the most seriously awesome hardcore games ever made; atmospheric and deep, to a 2.5D sidescroller sequel.

You come off as a bit of a snob here. Why is an exploration based FPS any more of a legitimate genre than a 2.5D platformer? I dare say Retro would argue it was worth their time, as it sold millions and probably firmly cemented them as some of Nintendo's best talents.

And oh dear. You used the "h" word. May god have mercy on your soul. To the extreme.

If there's one thing I think Nintendo could stand to use, which I think Retro would be best suited to provide? An exclusive 3D action game series, with the kind of rewarding combat and "epic set-pieces" that made GoW such a success on Sony's hardware.

Whether they utilize Samus again to accomplish that much, or kick things off with an all-new IP, I really want to see what Retro's been up to.

I'm guessing here, but you didn't spend a lot of time with DKCR, did you? That game has some seriously amazing atmosphere when you stop to look around, or admire DK's animations, or just go exploring and trying things you didn't think of at first.

The game is also very difficult, especially to master. I don't understand what you are talking about when you say they moved from "one of the most seriously awesome hardcore games ever made... to a 2.5D sidescroller." The two ideas don't pair as well as you might think they do. They are both amazing for their genres.

I'm sure they'll all include sensor bars. They probably cost about 50 cents to make, and are necessary for anyone wanting to use a Wiimote (either bundled or one they already own).

Since people are still asking about when the conference begins on Thursday, Media check-in begins at 9am, so expect to hear things starting then but don't expect anything major during that time. The event starts at 10am according to the invitation.

I guess between 9 and 10 there may be some random tweets if demo units are in the open or if people sneak around.

Ok, you're taking my points too far. DKCR is as deep as the genre will allow it to be (well, no it's not), but it can't be Metroid Prime. It is derivative of Nintendo proper, where Retro is one of the few teams in their web that have proven they can do something different and do it well.

It would be like EA asking Respawn to do an NFL game.

One of the top 5 2D platformers of this gen is considered "a waste of talent"??

GTFO

I will not GTFO.

I'd just rather they don't develop in a genre that a dozen other teams inside Nintendo do and do well.

(Nor do I consider it a top-5 2D platformer this generation).

True that it is cheap and necessary, but to Nintendo cheap is just a little more for their bottom line, and the line of thinking could be that anybody who has a Wii Remote likely has a Sensor Bar as well.

I guess the question now is, has Nintendo really created an extremely innovative and unique system, or do they just think they have?

Currently polling second in Australia's federal election (first in the Gold Coast), this feral may one day be your Bogan King.
All three Metroid Prime games combined: 4.4+ million worldwide.
Donkey Kong Country Returns: ~5 million worldwide.

All the new hires in the last couple of months make me quite confident that it won't be a platformer.

New IP, Nintendo Warfare. 1st person or 3rd person shooter multiplayer only game. Similar to what Smash did with Nintendo characters in the fighter realm, this will be Nintendo's take and takeover on the shooter genre.

just my guess.
