Kotaku: Gamestop has sold out preorder deluxe Wii U stock nationwide

So here in Cincinnati Ohio, I got my preorder in around 6:40 PM EST Friday. So is my receipt that says I got a preorder in still valid? Or should I be expecting a call from Gamestop saying that they have overbooked on preorders? Or is that even possibe?

aahh I knew I should've gone to preorder today.

Maybe Best Buy still has some...

it's obviously a better value based on what u get

Just wish it came in White :(

The biggest reason I went with the Basic set was for the White unit (along with cheaper price + I'm the first preorder for it in my store so I'm definitely getting it)

I kinda hope that we DO have a situation like the Wii, because I'm trying to hold myself back from buying one until at least mid next year, and if there aren't any WiiU's to buy, I can't give in!

My local Best Buy store is no longer taking preorders for the 32GB, and multiple locations in my area are also no longer taking preorders for the 8GB. Just wait and see, it's going to be 2005 all over again. If you want one during the launch window, just go ahead and preorder ASAP. Don't be left kicking yourself this time.

I had the hardest time getting a Wii. I got one not long after launch, but because I didn't preorder it I had to spend at least 46-72 hours total waiting for one. I'd go to the store each day when I knew the truck was showing up and wait for a few hours since a line formed every day, and we would just wait to be told if they had any on the truck that day. It was usually no so we would all leave then come back the next day.
This was me everyday. Sadness. 10-20 people lined yp everyday just to be dissapointed. Eventually I got one december 26 2006 :(

I'm surprised the deluxe version is popular.

Nothing about it seems appealing to me. I'm assuming Nintendo have focused a lot more on standard stock or something.

It's a much better value than the basic one that's for sure. To me it's the only one to get if you're going to get the thing like the Pro 360 was back in 05.

Oh damn, ok, I was thinking ''Well no need to rush for a pre-order, the thing ain't gonna sell out for weeks like the Wii.''

I was wrong, pre-ordering a WiiU is now on my schedule tomorrow.

How is this possible? I don't remember pre orders being "sold out" for the Wii...

That's because shit didn't hit the fan with the Wii until mere days before launch launch when people actually tried the thing out and word of mouth spread via in person and on TV. That's when things got crazy.

The Wii U is the successor to the Wii. People already know what will happen. Go figure.

Indeed it is, but I've got an incredible deal on the UK Basic 8gb thanks to Amazon screwing up their prices to begin with. £220 is something I'm not going to pass up, especially when I already have a massive usb hard drive waiting to be used.

Have they said how many units they're shipping at launch? I wonder if this is Nintendo orchestrating another one of their N64/Wii shortages to get marketing and demand up.

Contrary to popular belief, this was never true afaik.

You're remembering wrong. Gamestop announced the date preorders started for the Wii nearly a week early and people camped for preorders. Wiis were presold out even quicker than this.

The wii even with its massive shortages sold more consoles in the period than any other ever. Demand was just tat insane. I wont say Wii U will be that bad for as long as the Wii but I do expect constant sell outs for awhile

why is the preorder still up on gamestop.com then?

If it's anything like UK retail, online has different supplies of stock to retail in quite a few cases. No idea about gamestop in particular, but it's obvious the report is regarding retail stores.

I got my pre-order in on Thursday for the deluxe, I was the first. I heard that GS was getting 100,000 Wii U's (basic and deluxe combined) in the US for launch day. Now I'm not sure if that's true, but if so, is that a lot or a little? That doesn't sound like much to me, but if Pachter is right about only 1 million being manufactured worldwide per month, than I guess 100,000 for one retailer at launch is decent.

Didn't happen with 3DS or Vita.

Apples and Oranges.

3DS and Vita are competing against smartphones which have taken over the handheld market. I know some of you will never believe this though because you've buried your heads in the sand and try to pretend that it hasn't happened to your beloved handhelds.

This is a brand new game console for the home, and not something to take on the go.

It's clear this was going to sell out at launch. Given the speed at which it occurred, it's also likely this was due to devout early adopters. It's post-Holiday numbers that will give any solid indication of how well accepted the console is at its current price point.

This morning it was SOLD OUT at my retailer.

But now it's not.

SCORE!

Preordered.

Did they charge my card, though?

Or do they do that when it launches?

They will do a funds availability check but it will return the funds to you. When it ships they will charge to keep

Fuck I won't be able to preorder anything until Monday.

Hope I can still get a deluxe set in two days.

They put a temp charge for the full amount on the card which falls off after 3-5 business days. Then, once it's ready to ship, they actually put the final charge through.

Yeah, that's what I thought I'd do when the Wii came out.

Good luck.

I was unable to purchase one at launch for weeks. And I worked in retail, so I had first pick of stock. Absolute fucking madness. And the amount of customers who got angry and irate was unbelievable. Just insane.

Luckily, one of my mates had snagged one at launch with a few games and decided he didn't like it. Sold it to me for £200 (retail was £180). Holy fuck was I lucky. Still got it, still going strong, and still my most played console ever.

I don't see the value. Nintendoland isn't a game I consider worthy of money, so you're paying for more-but-still-not-enough storage and some stands. Shrug.

Gahiggidy

My aunt & uncle run a Mom & Pop store, "The Gamecube Hut", and sold 80k WiiU within minutes of opening.
I bet you will be able to pick one up on luanch day/week if you head to NYC and get in line at either the NWS or the Times Square Toys R Us.

Huh, I called mine at like 6 PM and they said they were like 45% out of preorders for the deluxe. I guess people went after work or someone is lying. Or Nintendo just gave them a pretty tight limit.

Cool!

Got the deluxe and everything.

I hope Amazon/Nintendo sort their shit out soon, though. Those 35 bucks in taxes could go towards another game.

This is... kinda surprising?

In 2006 Wii and ps3 pre-orders were sold out almost immediately. I knew people that camped out to reserve both systems, and I camped out at Best Buy for a Wii on launch day. I think that was due to the launch hysteria surrounding the supply constrained ps2 in 2001, which lead to fears of short supply for subsequent console releases.

People don't seem as obsessed with pre-ordering consoles these days, and I think that's been the case since Nintendo started releasing so many DS variants, which made it seem like new hardware was constantly available for pre-order, and reserving day one wasn't as essential. 3DS pre-orders didn't sell out immediately like Wii/ps3, and did PSV pre-orders sell out at all?

I figured the Wii U would sell out its pre-orders eventually, given consoles are generally a bigger deal than handhelds, but I'm surprised it happened quite so quickly. I'm not surprised it didn't happen within 30 minutes of going on sale like Wii/ps3, however. I think those days are over.

I pre-ordered my black Wii U via BestBuy.com a few hours ago. I don't have a 3DS or PSV yet.

Maybe I missed it, but have they announced anything on the pro controller? Price? Date available? Anything other than saying it will exist?
