Whatcha Been Playin': Ghosts of Survival Horror Past Edition

Dead Rising 2

I'm lost every time I go into the mall. That there isn't an option to set my own way points for the arrow is really annoying. They can give me an arrow to find a person to rescue, but an arrow to lead you back to the safe house? Now you're talking crazy. I am happy that I can run and shoot at the same time, and that is a big improvement over the last game. The one thing I kind of miss from Dead Rising to this game is that I felt like I could spend all my time killing zombies. This one has a compelling enough story that I want to keep progressing. So far my only death has been after I killed a man with a tiger. I got a call right after the cutscene and who kills me when I answer it? The tiger. It should have been eating.

Resistance 3

This should not have been Resistance 3. This should have followed the Assassin's Creed model. There is a new main character, but his story is a lot of AC: Revelations type stuff. It focuses on his journey and him missing his kids, but it isn't anything worth a numbered game. Maybe it should have been called Resistance: Cold Sore. The systems in the game are great, and the fights are fun, but when it comes to moving the story forward, it just feels like a Half Life Episode 1. The chimera are going lambent, and there are new enemy types to face, but the rest is just a by the numbers story. As for the new questions that came out of the game? I don't care to know the answers. I had fun shooting the bad guys, and that's all that I was looking for.

Dead Space Mobile

This game is much better than I thought it would be. The mind tricks are also interesting. I picked up from an old save, so I don't know if the guy I am playing is the same one from DS1, but he is already more interesting. They do this really great joke where the guy runs up to a locked door and a voice over the intercom tells him that he will have to back track 300 meters, go into several different rooms, activate power sources, and then admits that they are just pulling the guy's leg and he pops the door open. I like a dev that can laugh at their own mission structure.

October is a great month to play scary games. I'm going to try to keep a horror/monster/zombie theme for all the games I play this month. I'm really looking forward to seeing if anyone else is doing the same, so I gotta know: Whatcha Been Playin'?

Started playing some DayZ again. Still great.

Playing through mirrors edge for a lets play - it's fantastic!

Playing through silent hill 1,2,3 and 4 on an emulator - it's interesting seeing how they advance then get slightly worse. All good though and very very scary!

Edit: oh and constantly playing small amounts of true vault hunter mode in bl2 :)

Resident Evil 6 - It's ok.

The game does it's best to convince you it's terrible, but once you come to grips with the awesome combat mechanics, and learn to tolerate all the bad QTEs and baffling design decisions, you might have a great time.

Beat Torchlight 2 (PC) with one friend using my Outlander. Found the final dungeon a tad disappointing, but what a fantastic game. Been working on a tank Engineer with another bro since, which I find a lot more fun, surprisingly. Throw down a little sentry gun and watch him run drive-bys on our enemies. So awesome. Also started up Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow (DS). I wasn't really sure what to pick next from my DS backlog, but I needed a bit of a break from the adventure / visual novel stuff, so here we are. It's ... aight. Kind of hard to go back to this sort of thing after Ecclesia.

Going to start up Tokyo Jungle this weekend. Pumped.

Finished off Borderlands 2's achievements yesterday. I moved on to Sengoku Basara HD Collection and One Piece: Pirate Warriors.

Resident Evil 6 (Xbox 360) - Been out of the loop these past two weeks due to Eurogamer Expo, but found a nice, little promo from Capcom waiting for me by the time I got back home. I'm not very far in Leon's campaign, I've barely touched Chris's campaign and nowhere near Wesker Jr's campaign.

But even now, I've got a little bit of a bad feeling. But lets see where it takes me.

Back home for a wedding so I have access to my older stuff.

Super Famicom:

DBZ Hyper Dimension
Tetris Battle Gaiden

DC
Psychic Force 2012

I'm on a big RE kick since RE6's debut has been so hilarious and expected.

RE Outbreak - Won't be the same without online
RE3

Might squeeze in RE1 or continue my RE0 replay.

It's roguelike week, FTL and Spelunky and both are excellent.

I hope to get some playtime with the Trials Evolution dlc this weekend.

NHL 13 - Been playing EASHL with one of my friends. Only about 27 games away from my Legend card.

Dead or Alive 5 - It's pretty fun. I still need to go online with it though.

Vanquish - No idea why I'm so late to this party. Just finished up my first playthrough a couple nights ago and started hard mode.

Bayonetta - Still working on unlocking the secret boss fight... slowly.

Fatal Frame - Only played it a bit recently. Need to get back into it.

Same. I have tried online just a bit. ....I need practice.

BL2 should be in my mailbox today from Gamefly; looking forward to trying that.

And playing Counter-Strike: GO whenever I get a spare half-hour or so.

Three days weekend for me (Forza Columbus!) so I hope to finish up Sleeping Dogs. There's a lot of sports on Saturday and Sunday though, so gaming might take a backseat until Monday morning.

Torchlight 2.

I'm waiting for XCOM and DisHonored, but I can't decide what I want to play them on. I've got a laptop and a PS3, and my laptop's not great, but I'm worried about the PS3 versions, and I prefer to get retail boxes whenever possible, but I've got these steambux just sitting in my account.

Mainly waiting for Retro City Rampage though.

Finally got Borderlands 2 form Gamefly, can't wait to crack into it this weekend. Also downloaded FTL, which is amazing. Want to try to finish BL2 sometime next week so I can have time for Dishonored and X-Com. It's so good having quality games to play!

Been a busy week at work so I haven't been able to sit down and play that much. Been playing mostly DS titles on my 3DS - Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story and Professor Layton and the Unwound Future in this case.

Also managed to buy Tokyo Jungle and play a 103 year run with a pomeranian the same day. I really have to get back to it next week when I have more time.

I've been on a bit of a retro-spacesim bent as of late; been playing the entire Wing Commander series from the first game, expansions and all. Up to Wing Commander Prophecy now, not gonna start it just yet. (also got XCOM coming next week, can't wait for that.)

Tokyo Jungle. This game owns. I'm pretty motivated to keep unlocking the increasingly awesome animals and I love that I can play a complete round or two of survival in one sitting. It makes for a great game to chill out to when I have a little free time at the end of the day.

Borderlands 2. Tokyo Jungle has been stealing the spotlight, but BL2 is an okay game. More of the same, but there are some minor improvements. Hopefully it clicks more with me once my weapons get less shitty.

Bejeweled on my phone more than anything else. Best game ever.

Rayman Jungle Run. So glad to be done with the flying levels. The wall-run levels are the best yet, this is neck and neck with Super Hexagon as the best mobile game of the year so far.

RPG Maker VX Ace: Still working on various things. I've jumped ship from my current project to help out my bro's game. I think we are going to release/complete his project first because it's a bit less ambitious than mine. We just want to test the waters to see what people think and then go from there with our next (or future) projects. We also have a friend who's been making a really, really interesting game and we both think it's shaping up to be pretty fucking exceptional. He's kind of lit the fire under our asses, so to speak. We've all played and demoed countless projects from the RPG Maker community and there's NOTHING interesting out there. It's incredibly depressing, to be perfectly honest. There's like zero competition and it's sad because you CAN make interesting games with this software. Our goal is to sort of "wake up" everyone with these projects. Hopefully we can pull it off! =D

Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne: Just finished last night. 50 hours logged on Normal, got the "good" human/neutral ending somehow. After returning to this game after so many years I think I have to make it my favorite PS2 RPG of all time. It's just so fucking incredible. It's got great character customization, rewarding progression, excellent enemy variety, interesting boss encounters, unique dungeons, an incredible soundtrack, multiple difficulty levels, tons of end-game optional content, and an actually cool post-apocalyptic world and setting. It's just got everything you should be looking for in an RPG. I honestly feel bad for those who haven't played through this yet, especially if you are a fan of RPGs.

Fatal Frame 2 Crimson Butterfly: It's October, the leaves are falling, Halloween is approaching, and it's getting cooler. What better time to open the windows, get some fresh air, and play a survival horror game? I would have picked up Resident Evil 6 if it wasn't such a colossal train wreck of "not getting it", but unfortunately, that's not the case. FORTUNATELY, I have a bunch of classic PS2 survival horror games that I've never played before. I totally missed out on the Fatal Frame games back when they released. I picked them all up a few years back and just played through the original a little over a year ago. Needless to say, I loved it! I just started playing Fatal Frame 2 last week and I'm on Chapter 2. So far, I've got nothing bad to say about it. It's just that perfect PS2-era survival/horror action formula that just WORKS. Everyone says this is like the scariest game ever but I haven't been too disturbed by it yet. I think I'm just so desensitized at this point to be scared by a video game. Plus, I just think this kind of shit is cool so what normally makes people jump makes me go, "Whoa, this is really cool!".

Raw Danger: HUGE Disaster Report fan here. I've only beaten this game once with one of the main characters. There's multiple characters to play as in this game so I've decided to get back into it to see the rest. Still playing as Joshua at the moment, but I can't wait to see the others. The game is still as awesome as ever. Man, I miss Irem! =(

Those have been my primary plays. I started up Strange Journey a few weeks back, but Nocturne took over again and I haven't picked it up in a week. I also started Devil Summoner which I might jump into soon. Other than that I've been playing some eShop Gameboy titles here and there on my 3DS like Donkey Kong 94'.

Not the best game ever made, but i'm certainly enjoying it. Love the combat and it has some good characters. The game just could have done with a lot trimmed off and a better camera.

Finished 6 chapters so far, by following the chronological list from the OT.

Borderlands 2 PS3
borderlands20220skillmrpol.jpg

Traded for the PC version, but double dipped on the PS3, so i could play with friends. Hopefully having a LAN of it tomorrow with some friends. Think i'm going to settle with the soldier class, that has the turret.

From what i've played, i think the dialogue is historical.

Jet Set Radio PC
untitled-241ox4.png

Still playing this, but have slowed down a little this week. Think i'm a bit into the second act and have quite a few skaters unlocked. Such an awesome game and awesome soundtrack.

slide into a fucker with your shotgun, blow his head up at a 45-degree upward angle, shuffle backwards on the ground to barely avoid getting stabbed from his friend, blast said friend in the leg, get up on your feet, dropkick that bastard

when this game works, it works

Resident Evil 6 (360):Leon's Campaign was good fun, Mercs mode is a blast as usual. Dipping into Chris' campaign tonight.

Torchlight 2:so much content here- Im a lowly level 20 outlander(5 hours in), but so far I have seen enough to warrant it a better purchase than Diablo3.....

Borderlands 2: will log in tonight and tomorrow to give my level 50 'zerker 2 more gold keys on 360 and my level 50 assassin 3 more gold keys on PC. weren't people bitching about a lack of gold keys?

Hell Yeah!:my most played game this week on steam and I got it yesterday morning! Love it. Also side note: this game my wife actually doesn't mind I play in the living room. Haha

Last week, I said I was pondering dropping Lego Star Wars (360) and starting a replay of either God of War or Final Fantasy X.

Well, I've dropped LSW by simply not playing it, but I've been too busy with work to start a replay of anything else. Will definitely do that this weekend, starting with God of War. Love that game. FFX to follow, will probably take me deep into November at the rate of things. Halo 4 after that. Unless I replay Dragon Age first.

Ooh, or KOTOR.

Anyway, getting ahead of myself. God of War. This weekend.

I think said something similar in the OT, like "When it's good, it's good". I definitely agree.

I'd actually love a directors cut, which made the game shorter, rather than longer. It reminds me of Sonic Unleashed in that regard. I would have paid to have a version of Unleashed, with only actual sonic.

Lots and lots of DOA5. Got Resi 6 yesterday but barely touched it.

Also trying to get all the endings on 999 before the end of the month. Put me off a little when I ran through the game and got an ending I'd already seen.

Borderlands: Game of the Year Edition (PS3) - At New Haven, got to
meeting Patricia Tannis.

New Super Mario Bros. 2 - Finally beat it, still need to collect more star medals and
to the Mushroom, Flower & Star worlds.
I don't really like the game as much as I did SM3DLand or NSMB1 on DS or NSMB Wii. It felt like 'leftover levels' cobbled together.

Assassin's Creed Bloodlines - Playing this on PSP and....it's not very good. In fact, it's awful. Just power-playing through it and not really worrying about the side missions.

Surprised at how this game hooked me from the very start. Playing the Berserker class with a Wolf companion. This is kind of like my first foray into this type of game and I'm loving it. I definitely wanna go back and pick up Diablo 3 after I beat this.

Only played this for like an hour or so. It's really good, but it feels just like 2k12 a bit. Gonna put more time into it when I start up my season.

I like Metroidvanias a lot, but one of the things I like most about this one is that I never have to feel lost, I can always look at the guide to find out where I should be going. I'm gonna try to finish it up this weekend, I think I'm getting close.

Resident Evil 6: I've been using the chronological chapter order from the OT and I'm 5 chapters in (out of 20). That puts me at 6.5 hours played, and I am having a blast. This game definitely takes some getting used to, but once you figure out the combat and traversal mechanics it really is a blast and a half.

Drop a remote bomb next to the window that zombies are streaming in from, dive backwards to avoid a zombie leaping through said window and shoot him in the face, peg another one in the leg while you're still on the ground, get up and suplex him into oblivion, then detonate the bomb to asplode the 7 zombies who have now clambered in through the window. Awesome.

Rochard_Cover.PNG

Rochard: Been playing this on and off on my laptop but it's a really fun and quirky puzzle/action game with a great sense of character. Probably has one of the best voiced protagonists in indie game history.

250px-Metroid_Prime_Trilogy.jpg

Metroid Prime Trilogy: The first game I got for my new Wii, and it's a blast. I haven't played any of these games so I'm making my way through MP1, which holds up surprisingly well (even though the graphics are pretty dated). I'm still impressed at all the visor effects that Retro snuck into this game; dat condensation!

Woooo, long weekend!

Sonic Adventure 2 HD (PSN/XBLA/PC (later))

I'm a huge fan of Sonic Adventure 2's soundtrack, but not so much the game because most of the other characters who aren't named Sonic or Shadow have some weird levels. Neither of the Adventure games aged well from my experience with them a few years ago, and it seems like nothing's changed.

Still, I love the soundtrack, and visually, it aged somewhat pleasantly outside of some of the environmental textures. Textures on other things look fine, though.

NiGHTS into Dreams... (PSN/XBLA/PC (later))

NiGHTS into Dreams isn't for everyone. I like it, though. It's quite colourful, the music's great and the game's general premise is rather simple. But like a lot of people have been saying, the controls feel a little stiff in this version.

Little Big Planet Vita

I'm not a fan of LBP, but I don't mind this game. The touchscreen controls seem to work pretty well, and I like the worlds in general so far. it's okay. Kinda iffy on gyro and backtouch stuff, though.

Final Fantasy IV (SNES)

Tekken Tag Tournament 2: Simply the best fighting game out this year. Looks great, plays great, has an amazing soundtrack, and its feature-packed to the gills. BUY THIS.

Dead or Alive 5: Love the tits. Wish the soundtrack were better. Story mode is the videogame equivalent of Zoloft. Still fun though. Didn't need the CE but oh well.

Double Dragon Neon: Love this. A total tribute to my favorite childhood genre and it gets it completely right. They really nailed it.

VITA! Just enjoying being a Vita owner. Love getting in quick rounds of MvC3 and Wipeout. Really excited to get Jet Set Radio on there next week. Downloaded the Silent Hill demo as well but have yet to try it out. Feeling good about this little device. Also looking forward to Ragnarok this month.

Want to get:

Doom BFG and Dishonored. D3 will fit perfectly into my October Halloween festivities and Dishonored, well that's just fucking awesome looking. :)
