SNES Gaf fall in - what's your history with the system?

Have a 70cm CRT, Philips, that I like to use for all the older consoles.
Bought a SNES last year and I have 5 games for it:
DKC 1
DKC 3
Super Mario Allstars
Super Mario World
Starfox

Planning to get Super Metroid, Lost Vikings, Terranigma and A Link To The Past, maybe Mystic Quest. All the other good RPGs, like Chrono Trigger, Super Mario RPG, Earthbound and all Final Fantasies were never released in Europe, so I'll try to get them via Virtual Console. And PAL copies of Illusion of Gaia and Lufia II are really expensive. Or is it possible to play US games without problems on PAL consoles?

Otherwise, even though graphics and sound are really improved compared to the SNES, I still prefer the look and feel of NES games - it gives me so much more for my imagination and the games are mostly really challenging.

I use an XRGB2-plus since I dont have space for an additional TV. Been pretty pleased with it since I got. So pleased that I am thinking of upgrading to the Framemeister.

It's funny because I have every single game there, and with the exception of Zelda, all of them are that exact version pictured. Which is to say, I imported all of them, since I'm European.

I bought my SNES on launch day. The few months before it were, to say the least, nerve-wracking. By then I had been drooling about its games for years, and I was that close to importing a Japanese or US unit, as it was released in Spain in 1992 (over a year after the US and almost two years after Japan); this, of course, was before Internet and e-mail were popularized, and among many other hurdles, both economical and logistical, my level of spoken English wasn't quite enough to hold a commercial conversation over the phone with a foreign retailer. By then I already had a NES, a Genesis, a Game Boy and a Spectrum, and Super Mario 3 was my favorite game of all time, so it's a bit hard to explain how anxious I was to play Super Mario World.

To this day, I consider it the golden age of gaming. The awe and bewilderment many of those games made me fell, as been repeated much more sporadically in later generations. Zelda, FF2/4 and FF3/6 are games that literally had a part in defining who I am today. I sunk an inordinate amount of hours into countless other timeless classics like Starfox, Mario Kart, Castlevania IV, Chrono Trigger, Contra III, Axelay, Secret of Mana, Super Metroid... the list goes on and on.

That is not to say I deny the merits of current gaming; in fact, in a sense, I consider the current generation a renaissance of sorts, as it has produced many games I consider to be simply amazing. It's almost as if 3D reached its true maturity this generation, the same way that 2D reached its own with the 16-bit generation. I'm optimistic for the future. :)

First console my family owned. My father got me the SNES + Two Controllers + Nintendo Scope + Super Mario All Stars.

I used it till late 1998, when I bought a Playstation.

I used to play a LOT of Super Mario AS, Super Mario Kart, Wario Woods and Batman.

I won a SNES in the second grade for some fire safety poster contest. It came with Killer Instinct. My best friend at the time gave me his extra copy of Super Mario World. Those were the only two games I had for a while. Then I let a kid in my class borrow Killer Instinct, and in exchange he gave me around a dozen games. Most of them were good ones, too, like Super Mario RPG, DK Country 1+2, Super Mario All-Stars, and some others I can't think of right now. There were a couple stinkers like Wheel of Fortune and some Caesar's Palace game. For some reason, we never traded back, so I ended up with a decent collection.

It was also my first console.

I was soo close to buying an XRGB-3 when I was at one of the game shops in Akihabara last year. Couldn't bite on the 30,000 yen.

Is that composite or s-video to the XRGB-2?

That is SNES jr modded with RGB out. Personally, I dont think there is too much of a point in spending money on a decent upscalar unless you're gonna go RGB. When I play my NES on it, the difference is barely noticeable. With RGB out though, the difference is pretty clear. I dont have time to post a pic now but when you run StarOcean with composite, the teal/blue (like in the text window) comes out as more of a light blue. Not to mention the cleaner pixels.

Also, as far as price, XRGB 2plus was pretty reasonable when I bought it. I think I only payed 8,000 yen for the unit and 2500 yen in shipping. Not too bad. A cheaper route would be to buy a GBS 8820.

And even i am moderately surprised
thought i'd posted in here, but seems not (?)

bought a PAL SNES when it launched in the UK and fell in love with Super Tennis and F-Zero.

Got a JPN SNES some time latter, amassed collection once i got here - sold it all off - then about 5 years later bought it all back basically.... then sold it all again a year or two ago.

Part of the collection (not all) :

I use this converter to play jap/us games on my pal snes:

I've paid 60 euro for a complete IoG pal from ebay but you can get it generally for 50 euro ( boxed complete in good condition ).
Ace action rpg.

Rpgs for snes are expensive buys these days (on ebay)

Mega Man X and F Zero on my plate as of late.

I've been playing mine on a 46" HD TV and it's kinda painful, but I've been so out of the loop I didn't know there were decent options to buying a CRT now. I'm gonna look into this.

Anyone have their cartridge batteries run out yet? I still have NES saves that still work, but I'm kind of wondering just how long these things will last.

If you are outside of Japan the best place to find these are ebay. Just be prepared to pay $500+ unless you find a used one.

Never even knew that existed.

First console I ever used. I'm pretty certain A Link to The Past was the first game I ever played so, yeah, not many better ways to get introduced to games.

First time I saw it was at my rich friend's. His parents bought him a Super Famicom with Rockman X, Street Fighter II and Super Mario World. Street Fighter II was a HUGE game at the time, so we played it almost 24/7. First thing I noticed were the graphics. I also remember playing one of the cave levels in Super Mario and noticed how every sound echoed. I was blown away by that.

My grandfather bought me an NES when I was 2 (91 ish) and I loved it so much. I spent hours playing Mario 3 and became a Nintendo die-hard instantly. My best friend at the time had an SNES in the early 90s and I thought it was the coolest thing ever. Super Mario World was the most awe-inspiring game I've ever encountered. Getting to play it in bits and pieces at his house was so much fun as a kid. My dad bought an SNES for me one Christmas and the rest is history :'(. SNES was the epitome of gaming as a kid for me. Spending hours looking for secret exits in Mario World, trying my HARDEST to get the gyrocopter in DKC3, figuring out how to beat the slug boss in Yoshi's Island, getting 100 super jumps in Mario RPG etc.

When I got a little older and the N64 took over and right before the GCN, I discovered the wonders of emulation, and got to play the RPGs I had missed out on. This is how I got to experience games like Chrono Trigger, FF3, Secret of Mana - which to this day rank as some of the best RPG experiences I've ever had.

I love the SNES.

Never personally owned one, started on the PS1. However, I remember that one of my older cousins use to have the system when he came over thought he would not let me play (I was 1 at the time). Then I use to go to a friends house every summer in elementary school 2-5th grade and we always played Mega Man X and get to the sigma stages in one sitting. I also remembered NBA jam and him having Final Fantasy III on the system (thought I never see him play the game when I was around)

I've since picked up most of the SNES classics via re-releases or Virtual Console.

ah, some great tunes.

SNES games and music are like my refuge from the vagaries of adult life. Whenever things get me down I can escape to the halcyon days of 1990-1996, not that it's strictly a nostalgia trip i think the games stand the test of time extremely well and are accessible to new players today.

I tutored my little cousins for 20 bucks a week. I saved up 100 bucks and my mom surprised me buying me the system before I used my money :...) picked it up with rival turf lol!

Soon after I picked up super smash tv, act raiser, contra 4 and castlevania. What a great system.

Yeah, pretty much this for me too.

I actually had a neighbor that had sold video games at the local swap meet, and her godson was around my age, so I was fortunate enough to get to check out so much stuff I would have never been able to otherwise. I Spent so many nights over there "testing" games with him to make sure they were in saleable condition.

Strider, X-Men, NBA Jam: TE, Toe Jam and Earl, Comix Zone, Zero Wing, MK II, Ranger X, Earthworm Jim, I would never admit it then lol but, Aladdin, Road Rash, Shinobi III, Phantasy Star IV, Zombies Ate my Neighbors, Thunder Force, Eternal Champions the best worst fighting game of all time, and a literal tower of sonic carts. I got to play and love them all.

A bunch of mine have run out, including my FFII(4) battery, which seems to work about 50% of the time when I boot up the cart. You can replace them no problem, you just need to buy the batteries and the y-screwdriver.

It was an incredibly exciting system for me, but in retrospect, I wish I had spent more time with the Genesis. I've come to realize it's a way superior system for action games. I think it's pretty irrefutable that Hard Corps > Contra III, Bloodlines > all the Super Castlevanias... It's similar with STGs. The color palette is smaller but the processor is faster. Don't some people actually prefer the Genesis version of many fighters as well (including SF2)? I'm pretty sure the SNES version of MK2 is objectively better in all aspects, though.

I think we were all captivated by the scaling/mode 7 effects at the time but most of that has not aged well. That's one of the biggest reasons I don't think you can argue for Contra III; the top-down levels alone are a waste of time when Hard Corps is constantly offering unbridled intensity in its boss and level design. I wonder if the SNES could have even done something like level 1 in that game, where fucking everything is exploding all over the place - every single little enemy you kill, trucks, buildings, etc - without suffering from constant slowdown.

But as a kid? Jesus, the saturated colors were unparalleled. I wasn't thinking about the stuff I wrote above. Arcade-style games were were so incredibly hard for me; I did not fully understand them until now. I was just enjoying the perfect recreation of Saturday morning cartoon aesthetics, and the way the system was great for atmospheric RPGs with titles like FF6. I also was not consciously aware of the 6-button pad, and the default Genesis controller sucked horribly compared to the SNES pad, so that also contributed to my desire to never go back at the time.

I had both systems and can appreciate both of them. Mode 7 will always have nostalgia for me. I still like it.

I very rarely play old genesis games though. I can appreciate that some people prefer the genesis games.

Holy shit, where did you get that Star Ocean 1 repro??

Just picked up a copy of Super Ghouls n Ghosts.

Holy shit is there a not of slowdown in that game. It was one of the first games we got an launch, I had no memory of that slowdown... Looks like the Genesis version is better from what I saw on Gamecenter CX.

Genesis Ghouls 'n Ghosts and Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts are completely different games. They're both great, though Super GNG has better graphics and sound.

Oh and my history of the system: Family got one when I was 6 years old, Christmas of 1991. We had a really decent library of games before I sold a lot of them as a dumbass teenager trying to get money for Dreamcast games circa 1999. Recently my parents brought me the remainder of the game systems and stuff from the garage and storage shed as I just bought my first house and have a place for it. My plan is to have my CRT TV set up and dedicated for old systems while my plasma services newer (HDMI/component) systems.

Pretty excited to have my actual SNES hardware back instead of emulating my library. I'll start scouring yard sales to try to pick up some of the games I lost in my youthful stupidity.

Playing the snes was one of my first memories with video games if I can remember correctly. Played Super Mario World at a friend's house. After that, I was a gamer for life.

Never owned one but I've played street fighter 2 and killer instinct with my cousin. They were much older than me and I could never understand how to play correctly, so it turned me off fighters for the longest time. Good thing I know how to block now, lol.

Most of my SNES playing days are thanks to the Wii VC.

Yeah, and the Genesis version seems to be easier, or at least had unlimited continues. Maybe that was just the Japanese version.

I dunno, the double jump in the SNES version helps a lot...unless I'm forgetting something, I don't remember the Genesis version having that. Also the SNES version basically has unlimited continues...or at least the option for 9 lives per continue is good enough. I managed to complete the game (two runs with the faery bracelet at the end) like 10 years ago, anyway.
