Halo |OT10| The Calm Before The Storm

Thursday War minor spoilers:

So the reference to nano-machines modifying Naomi's armour to the point where it was new to her really bothered me. I think the whole nano machine thing is cheap - I would prefer a terminal showing Cortana spending the 3 years aboard FuD designing schematics and improving Chiefs armour using the tools on the ship. Why do nano-machines have to be a thing?

Really bothers me how weird Naomi's armour looks - based on the book I presume that's her on the cover. What the hell happened to her armour - what the hell happened to the classic helmet? Before reading the book I presumed that was a Spartan 4.

MK VII MJOLNIR that Naomi wears looks like the MK V. You must've missed where it was outright stated.

And the MK VI that MC wears doesn't have nano machines. Only the MK VII has. The redesign is simply "artistic liberties taken by 343i to make it look more functional"

Actually, that didn't need spoiler tags... but I guess some people get pissy so I'll leave them on.

Must have missed that - thats fair enough - I can live with her upgrading her armour - but the idea of nanomachines doing random stuff to the point even the Spartans have to re-explore the armour is pretty stupid.

Im sure it has been stated that nano machine's are the reason why the Chiefs design changed. I would actually be VERY content with 343 simply saying "we changed it because it looks cooler this way" - I just dislike the idea of magic nano tech in Halo and dont like where it could lead. Its a pretty insignificant thing in isolation, but is just part of the wider philosophy which I dont like.

Completely OT, but this will be my view for SNF on the 21st, my body is ready.

Bengals fan? Nice! Always liked them for some reason. I think it was being enamored with the Ickey Shuffle and their great teams in the late 80's early 90's. And they still have some of the best helmets in the NFL.

Hopefully you will come up with some great ideas besides the fact. It is interesting that they don't have any large scale Flat Landscapes for a Big Team Battle setting, however the options provided seem interesting enough. Perhaps the Space/Asteroid setting will allow for some interesting and new ideas. That erosion map seems interesting with the space with all of the water, and Ravine seems like it has a lot of potential as well, given that Forerunner structure. I'm inclined to believe we might get a new forge environment with DLC at some point as well.
This is what I'm hoping for. And I should note I don't mean to sound like I've written off Forge in Halo 4; I'm just reacting to what I saw in the video released this morning. There may in fact be more flexibility that I'm assuming. Or....

I think with Reach I ended up making maps a bit of the reverse way I did in 3 -- instead of building from "Scratch" I would spend a long time looking around the map and looking for the natural advantages in a spot that matched the kind of map I wanted to do, and then built around that. But that is obviously really limiting and it also gives you that sense that your maps are somewhat artificially being limited.

....I'll learn to adapt. I agree that this is the way to build maps, given the level of detail the designers have applied. With Reach, my first map was a from-scratch design, floating in the sky, because I came up with the core ideas before I got to play it. So rather than adapt my ideas to Forge World, I did what I could using just the FW objects.

For the second map, I did location scouting. And it took me a week to settle on a place to build the map. But then I came up with a design that worked in that space, and it still cratered the frame rate in the end. (If you guys want lots of detail on that process, I wrote about it for FUD here.)

I'm going to hold off on dreaming up maps before Halo 4 ships, and just start out location scouting. Hopefully I'll be more productive as a result.

So I went to Forgehub to see their impressions of the new forge map, but it isn't posted there . o_O I feel like they are just slightly falling behind in the forging world. See what I did there? ;)

From what I know (and I try to suck up all the canon info I can), it's never been outright stated that the MK VI has nano-machines. In Glasslands it was said that the MK VII has them and I think that most mistakenly thought that meant the MK VI had them too. From the few videos I've seen from 343i, they've said it's all to do with functionality and until they explicitly say nano-machines were involved lore-wise, I'm quite happy to go under the guise that the it's just liberties taken. I'm like you; I really dislike the idea of nano-machines because it means future changes will simply get a half assed excuse as to why they happened.

Any other pre-made maps on the other environments we may get a chance to see soon (like Relay)?

Did they say somewhere there would be at least 1 map ready for each forge environment on the disc? I know relay will be.

"new Halo game is out. No small maps, 5-shot BRs, ugly helmets, no dedis, we don't even know the ranking system, the biggest improvement to Forge in 3 years is shadows, AAs are back and multiplied times 3, RIP Halo/Free EazyB/Hire Juices"

Sad part is literally all of that is true...

RIP HALO :(

After intensive research and a voyage of discovery I have happened upon the most wonderful Halo cocktail.

The Master Chief Mojito!

MCMojito.jpg

Ingredients:
  • 50ml Bacardi or 100ml Bacardi Mojito
  • 1/4 Lime (squeezed)
  • 2 sprigs Mint
  • 125ml Mountain Dew Energy
  • Crushed Ice

Directions:
  1. Crush some ice, I use 4 cubes per drink, if you don't have a crusher you can use a rolling pin or mortar and pestle. Add to glass.
  2. Squeeze 1/4 lime over the ice, place the lime in the glass.
  3. Take two sprigs of fresh mint (wash it if necessary), give it a bit of a twist to crack the leaves and let the flavour spread easily. Add to the glass.
  4. Add 50ml Bacardi.
  5. Add 125ml Mountain Dew Energy.
  6. Stir and serve with a straw.
  7. Enjoy!

It is sublime.

The small maps part isn't right. Haven is small. you have very often encounters on that map in 4 vs 4

the biggest problems for a new Halo title are still far away:

-Good Playlist management
-Fast TUs and bug fixes
- no shitty guests
-good team ups in MM

if these things work out somehow it will be 100000 times better than Reach and Halo 3

I'm still not sure if getting. Whats the ranking system like? are we just going to get shitty matches again every game like in Reach? I'm kind of tired of that.

Why do people care about ranks as long as you get a good match?

Me and 3 bad kids, vs KyleJ and 3 bad kids is something you'd see in Reach.

Even if its a close game because skill is "balanced" does not mean it equals fun and competitive.

4 good kids vs 4 good kids is a much better experience.

I want to get up towards the good ranks so I can go in and know everyone playing in the match will know what to do with their hands and how to correctly press buttons.

Seems like the Waypoint upgrades are nearly done. Forums actually run smooth and the load times are exponentially faster. All we need is some decent stat tracking and quality threads and we're good to go. I could get used to this.

That was the problem with Reach. I completely agree.

That said, if you consistently get matched with an entire lobby full of similarly skilled players, why bother with a ranking system?

But that's matchmaking, not the lack of ranks. True Skill is still ranking people it's just that matchmaking doesn't have tight restrictions so it matches you against almost whoever the fuck.

something to play for. i enjoyed ranking up in halo 2, made me want to play more to try to get that level 20. every match felt intense.

Going for a certain rank makes every match count. That extra bit of motivation and pressure can add a lot. Some time ago I went back to Halo 3 and played some ranked Team Slayer matches because I wanted to get a 50. It made matches so much more tense because it actually mattered what the outcome was. Some of the games I've played were really close and that made it even more satisfying to win. It felt more satisfying than all Reach matches I've played combined.

At this rate, ranking system will be revealed on November 7th.

Guys isn't it obvious? We are too "obsessed" over skill based ranks.

It doesn't even matter because we are going to have our exp based rank that shows off how long we have been playing the game....

Also, seriously guiz, having a skill based rank is far too offensive to people that can't get the highest rank. Has tee-ball taught you nothing? Clearly it makes much more sense to give the winner and the loser of a league the same trophy, that way everyone is a winner. -____-

Exactly, well a rank is kind of a visual trueskill, like the h3 rank was a modified trueskill I think...

Anyways yes in Reach you can play a kid whos on his third game and still has like a colonel rank and its just crazy talk. That shouldn't happen. Its almost a waste of a game because you know they are done for before it even starts...

Thats all I really want. I don't want to bother with playing the mini game "whos team is more stacked" I want the teams all stacked equally.

The Forge environments looks visually very good IMO although Ravine is a little bland compared to the others. I still find their decision to include permanent buildings on the maps to be strange. I don't Forge but the maps to me didn't look like they gave a whole lot of freedom. I'm sure some good maps will be made with what we are given though.

Yep. You know something is wrong with the matchmaking when you can go +20 or more and still lose sometimes.

Looks like a nice recipe besides the Mountain Dew part...

Pity.

Ranks is a insensitive, same as why they have progression system in the game. Something for people to "work" towards. Can Halo 4 be the best game ever without it? Of course, but why take away something that's been a fan favorite for the last 8 years.

Might change my avatar to this.

Keep your old one.

I've seen a few comments like this in response to my posts, so some elaboration and (hopefully) clarity is probably in order.

Generally speaking, I only build BTB maps, because that’s what I like to play. I built a total of five maps in Halo 3, maps that were polished and iterated on many times to a point where I was satisfied with them. (I'd started over a dozen, but only five made the cut, so to speak.)

I built just two maps to completion with Reach, despite the expanded tool set and dramatic increase in ease of use. As with Halo 3, I started over a dozen. I only built two to completion in Reach because while I kept coming up with map ideas, for the most part they didn't fit in with the geometry of Forge World. And to build them up in the air – as I did with one of the maps – placed serious creative limitations on the map: it meant every surface had to be flat and grey. And then in the end, the use of nothing but Forge objects as the geometry cratered the frame rate, making them unplayable in BTB HaloGAF customs, which is why I built them. Both maps were killed that way. I spent weeks working on them and one playtest killed’em dead.

One of the maps I attempted but never completed was set in the Gulch. But the terrain was uneven, and the space asymmetric, and so I kept having to change my designs to fit the geometry. And after a week of trying to get my ideas to fit in there, my original ideas were unrecognizable and I gave up in frustration.

What I wanted in Halo 4 was this: A big open flat space like the basin on Sandbox, but an open grassy meadow instead. And then 5-6 different grass-textured large objects to place to form my own hills on that space. Then I could dream up a map - symmetric or asymmetric - and make it as flat or hilly as I wanted, without the result looking like a grey metal dungeon. Toss in a range of rocks, tree objects, and the suite of additional Forge objects, and you’d be able to “accidentally” make beautiful maps, as the developer on the video said.

Right now it looks like the three Forge maps have the same set of limitations as Forge World: no big open spaces to build on. So if I dream up a BTB map, and that map does not fit in with the highly detailed geometry the map designers came up with, I have to use all Forge pieces. And then those pieces mean everything is flat and grey, which everyone hates because it's boring and ugly. And even if I manage to make a map I like, despite it being flat and grey, I run the risk of cratering the frame rate and so end up with junk in the end. (Again, this is how my work in Reach all ended.)

That's why I'm bummed out about Halo 4's Forge.
I understand your disappointment at the lack of a truly "blank canvas," so to speak, but I'll be honest - sometimes the most interesting art emerges out of constraints that have been imposed on the artist. I look at the three play spaces Certain Affinity has crafted and I see all kinds of interesting and unorthodox areas that we'll see people respond to, and I'm excited to see the variety this helps to encourage.

Oh god, not this crap. Go back to ForgeHub, please.
Never made a Forge map in my life ¯\(°_o)/¯
