Games journalism... LOL I think the posters of NeoGAF are far more astute when it comes to the inner workings of the games industry.

Haha. Wtf.

The response proves exactly why he needed to name names. If anything he should have named more.

I think he should have either named all of them, or none of them. But either way, give readers the relevant information so they can do the research on their own and get the names out that way (such as the pic I quoted above). Like I said, my only issue was one of tact. By mentioning just a couple people involved, it made things too focused on those individuals for my liking.

I might get flamed for this but whatever. I don't think Florence needed to name names in order to write a compelling article. I'm NOT saying what he did was libel or even necessarily 'wrong', it was just a bit much, especially towards a relative noname such as Wainwright. He could have just described the situation and guided people on a Twitter search for the offending hashtags. By calling her and others out by name, it makes things a little too personal for my liking. What could have been constructive criticism of the industry in general was instead something that could easily be misconstrued as personal attacks. [Note: I'm saying they were not personal attacks.] Regardless of how I feel about this admittedly minor point, I'm on the same page as most folks here about everything that transpired afterwards. At no point should anyone, especially a journalist, resort to or even fake legal action to silence criticism. I don't care how singled-out or unfairly treated she felt, nothing excuses that.
Except that one of the big problems is that game journos hide behind a collective anonymity. The pervasive sense that "everyone" is doing it makes this kind of behavior seem acceptable and normal.

By singling out specific people, I don't think Florence was trying to point fingers at just those people. He was naming names that were illustrative of a much larger, more pervasive problem in the industry. To simply say "people do X," no one would have noticed and it would have been shrugged off as just more generalized "moneyhat" accusations. Using actual names and examples gave his piece fangs. Besides, all he did was put publicly available information together.

But what sucks is that in the fallout, people are now getting distracted by those names rather than the industry-wide problem he was trying to call attention to.

Game journalism is a total joke and has been for a very long time. I stopped going to almost every gaming website after all the bullshit high scores gta4 got, and it wasn't even all the high scores but the fact that most reviews didn't mention anything about how much less content and things to do there was in 4 compared to the previous installments. And I see this happen all the time like recently with Uncharted 3 and the aiming issues that it had but since people that work in game journalism are friends with the people that work on the games this is not surprising at all and frankly I just don't care.

The only sources for game information that I will ever need are quick looks on giant bomb and just user impressions on neo gaf from people that I respect and actually love video games and the mechanics within them instead of pointless shit like how accessible a game is to any type of player. gtfo with that shit.

It's not like it was about those two anyway, they are just a small part of a bigger problem and he was bringing the problem to light.

Nobody should get upset about the truth.

The only way people handle mistakes well is if they have journalistic integrity in the first place, and I would assume this thread has opened a beehive on the issue that we even argue if game journalism has integrity.

Agreed.

The more I've seen of games writing the more it seems like a wonderful gig: a job where you don't have to be held accountable for anything you do - but get to hold everyone else accountable in whatever manner fits your headline.

Exactly. Which is why I think it's the height of lameness when games writers say "I'm not a journalist." It's a cop-out that lets them say whatever BS they want.

How can people be so hostile towards him? So disappointing.

I'm more disturbed by the fact that according to this tweet, the people sending him comments are people who can actually attend PR events (i.e., game journalists). I admit this is entirely selfish of me, but I kinda want him to just expose these people. At this point, it isn't like Florence is going to be working in games journalism for a long time (or at the very least, probably shouldn't given his alleged "enemies").

if only there was something showing her saying she was working for SE AND writing about their games at the same time. oh wait, there is. http://www.giantbomb.com/profile/atheistium/the-lauren-chronicles-a-few-life-updates/30-91806/

so that's her Sun Deus EX review, Tomb Raider hype and FF13-2 consultancy all in one post

well, I'm out

Holy shit! I think this thread is moving too fast and a lot of people missed this, but it's completely indefensible.

Oh, of course. I remember how so many sites went after "trolls" when people called out some of the gay sequences in Mass Effect 3. Most complained because how poorly presented the video was (Sheperd laid with a man and woke up with a gasp) but sites ran with this because people must have "trouble" with gays.

Then there's the massive Feminist Frequency debacle which I won't even bring up in its entirety, which is more of this but it's now "trolls hate girl gamers", and less to do with the fact she was given enough money to buy a house to make videos people often make on their own time. For free. Surely, it's just gamers hating the gurrrlz, right? That's what the journalists told me!

It's whatever fits the theme of the week, and sites will all flock and give you their spin on it, often regurgitating the same (incorrect) information. Often if /v/ gets involved, sites will always assert that it's just trolls picking on stuff, when they have, in fact, had valid opinions for hammering something. Not always, but they do sometimes.

Amazon Tony just got the boot.

Yeah, just noticed.

Highly inappropriate to propose this publicly, and explicitly against our rules (as seen above). Crosses the line.

Its a difficult topic, but I think the mods made the right decision on that one. We all come together in this Forum since its one of the few safe havens that I actually believe in. Stories like the one in this thread just suck and we really should stay independent. I guess the Tony thread was throwing up another issue of posters possibly contacting him about what he offered and making deals behind everyones back.

All around bad feel situation :/

John Walker puts the boot in. Again.

http://botherer.org/2012/10/25/a-bit-of-perspective/

She’s young, she’s inexperienced, and she’s fucked up.

Key paragraph:
After Florence’s article was published on Eurogamer, those in the industry who shifted uncomfortably at the sight of their boat being nudged immediately began shouting “IT’S A WITCH HUNT!” It was not. It was far easier to shout that and pretend that it was, than to actually take on board the arguments being made by the article. Now, sadly, it has become a witch hunt, and that needs to stop. Wainwright absolutely should be condemned for her actions this morning, but that’s where it should stop. She’s young, she’s inexperienced, and she’s fucked up. She has the right to apologise for that and to be forgiven. An angry mob acting like pricks provides an unhelpful perspective when trying to highlight issues that need changing.
Agreed wholeheartedly. The Internet rage machine always makes me nervous, even when it begins against an ostensibly deserving offense.

Yeah I think we all liked Tony but that was some bad timing, and against the rules if he read the FAQ. I hope it's a short ban.

Not too sure a short ban does it in this case.

I don't get why that Amazon marketer was allowed to post here anyway.

Eh, that sentiment is a bit stupid too. He was actively working with us to get deals done and informed us about deals. EviL was right about this crossing the line though.

anyway... before that... Who took geoff kheighley seriously?

I mean... If there is a PR Puppet in the industry ... Its him!

I never saw an interview where he asked real challenging question to the guy in front of him...
Its alway some verry friendly interview asking question that everyone will be happy to answer.
I don't entirely disagree with you, but these questions do come to mind:

On one hand I feel it was a horrible proposition on his part. but I could see *some* good of it. Which is worse?

1. Publisher makes an OT and you know their motives.
2. User makes an OT but you can't ever be sure of their motives.

Those DEALS bro. He was also very effective customer service from time to time.

I just find that really, really odd. Like I'd go in to game threads and he'd have a post saying "yo bros we have this on sale on Amazon check it out". Just felt really...un-GAF.

He seems to have very subtly moved from being an amazon "community" guy to just pushing their products and sales.

it's about crossing the line. this is a forum for gamers, by gamers. not marketing assholes.

Well I always felt like gaming journalism became a joke with the release of 360/PS3. The last nail in the coffin for me was the PS3 Skyrim bullshit. I remember back in the day when I had my PS2 and I had a monthly subscription to PSM (unofficial PlayStation magazine). Those group of guys have integrity and gave honest opinions and would provide factual information on a game to support their claims. Everyone magazine was a really enjoyable read.

Now everything is just a orgy of hype or PR bullshit. it is shit like this that makes me exclusively just read NeoGaf.

Of course. And history has shown game journalists make the worst mistakes imaginable when it comes to correcting things. I remember Brian Ashcraft wrote a damning piece on Hironobu Sakaguchi, and how his new game was just stealing from Final Fantasy, especially with the cover artwork. The problem, and it's a big one: the game was Pandora's Tower, a game he had no involvement in at all.

To be fair, it was a really dumb article in the first place. It was two spikey-haired characters seen from the side portrait. Hardly the plagiarism Kotaku made out.

I guess thats true, but he would also give a heads up about upcoming deals he was working on which gave gaf the jump on them.
