Wii U Press Previews

IGN's Audrey Drake has spent some time with Wii U and she's enjoying it a lot more than she thought she would.

This is awesome:
Another thing of note from my Wii U play time was how shockingly easy setting up the GamePad for television control is… and how very badly it made me wish I could play my Blu-ray collection on this thing. While I can't yet detail the process, suffice to say that both times I paired the system with a television (at work and then again at home), it was quick and incredibly simple. As many of us know, setting up a universal remote is usually a nightmare of inputting long codes until you finally stumble upon the one that works. With Wii U, it's a very different story, and something absolutely anyone should be able to easily figure out. Both times I’ve gone through this process, the Wii U synced perfectly with my television within a matter of seconds. After just a few moments and a few taps of the touchscreen, I was able to adjust the volume and channels and change the input right from my GamePad, as well as power on and off both the system and my television.

I was a bit worried about how difficult it would be to set up the TV remote feature.

There's too much plastic and paper in the packaging. Far too much packaging.

Better too much than too little!

I'm still concerned because it sounds like it's just a universal TV remote, which is useless to me. When you use an AV receiver to control volume and a DVR/set-top box to change channels, etc., where does the GamePad fit in? It doesn't sound like it can handle anything that complex.

Yeah, I don't do anything complicated like that with my TV setup or do cable/dish so it's more than enough for me as just a universal remote function.

Maturity, bitches.
I love how the OP is mostly just unboxing videos. The gaming media is so predictable.

Iwata really did leave them all with their tails between their legs.

Very excited to get my hands on this system! Nintendoland, NSMBU, Zombi U, and Tank Tank Tank.

should be pretty awesome

Tank! Tank! Tank! looks pretty fun but not something I would pay $60 for. (Will wait for $20 or less)

Does it has online play or its just local?

To be fair, Nintendo's embargoes are so restrictive, that's literally all they're allowed to show right now.

Now, if TVii can sync up to a set-top box, which should conceivably be possible, it could come in handy. A NoC PR guy said a few weeks ago that they are teaming up with the local cable providers so things may work out.

I'm interested in this because I do not have cable in my bedroom, but I have it in my house. I'm curious as to how I can do this easily as none of the TVs in my house use a box for TV. It's all through the house wires.

Though, one of them has those little shitty boxes that are just AD converters.

which might have something to do with the fact that people are still talking about the 360.

chicken and egg, to be sure

Only one of these two things is a potential solution to the other, however. You can't generate buzz for something magically -- games would do it though.

Will QA for food.

I really think it's a well put together box. Nothing really takes up space without a purpose with the way the boxes slide out. Might not be perfect, but it's so far better than most packages.

Yeh, that does not quite assuage my fears, although it will be one less remote I have to use. I really want to replace all my remotes entirely with the Gamepad.

Oh man the Wii U is so small... love it. Will fit nicely next to his older brother on my desk.

Shame I have to wait a while. I really want one. Guess I'll wait for the EU release of Wonderfull 101.

Specifically, I found it had trouble connecting with the system when buried behind my folded legs as I sat on the couch, or when hidden behind Brian Altano a few desks away.

<snip>

But given a reasonably clear path, the lag-free, dual screen connectivity it provides is an absolute joy - though you might want to put any lingering plans of playing Mario out on the patio to bed
Nnnooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

I'm pretty blown away that Tank Tank Tank is retail, 50 dollars, and still has no online functionality.

I need to know if the GamePad has support for controlling receivers. Surely Nintendo must realize many people with HDTV's have it hooked up to a receiver.... Right?

Right???

I watched the GB one and they seemed to be pretty interested while opening it and finding out what all was inside.

I wouldn't get to worried about game journalists not getting excited about a new console unboxing. For them it signals the beginning of a ton of work trying to push out reviews for all the launch titles by launch day.

Nintendo's stated goal of getting game journalists interest in the Wii U unboxing has been soundly defeated.

No one seems up in arms about these websites destroying their credibility and posting unboxings.

The hivemind has calmed down?

I'm certainly relieved that those people don't squeal just by looking at a console.

I'm disappointed they didn't squeal when they learned Nintendo Land was packaged in a proper box though. They are bad people and should feel bad.

I'm not liking the glossy black Wii U. It already looks dirty.

Yeah, it's a shame Nintendo went with the glossy finish again. As you can imagine, the touchscreen also gets smudges all over it. The one I used at GameStop was covered in fingerprints, but it was on a white Wii U. Anyway, I'll likely get a black Wii U since it's the better deal.
