GTA V GameInformer Discussion (11/8, 12PM EST)

No buying of property? Too bad. GTA games that don't allow you to buy property suffer from the "money is worthless" problem. In GTAIV, basically, you could only spend money on weapons... so doing a mission that gave you a lot of money was basically useless. Cash is a great reward for the player to do smaller missions, but removing things to spend money on makes it less valuable.

Yeah I hope there are nice things to buy though. I enjoyed buying property in SA. Sounds like we're going to have a ton of money again (if you don't buy clothes, shoes, etc) like in GTA IV...

So no properties and romance/relationships. And also, I like having three characters, but i can't help but feel emotionally the connection we feel with a character will be diluted a bit. In GTA IV i didn't like Niko at first, but by the end of the game I loved him. What if we only like one character in GTA V? Are we going to be forced to use each one to progress the story? well time will tell.

Did they talk about how we get away from cops in this game? will it be like GTA IV? I felt like it was too easy to escape in IV.

Good to see Dan Houser confirm again that the current generation GTA games are in a different universe from the PS2 generation GTA games. I remember bringing this up before when sites like IGN were convinced that it was Tommy Vercetti in the first trailer.

wasn't there a dynamic mission in GTAIV? Something about a serial killer hunting victims in a park? I heard about it in one of the radio stations or liberty city internet.

I wanted to believe so hard. It could have been the most epic thing ever.

Three playable characters, and not even one of them female...

It's cause he saw it on Giant Bomb.

• Three main characters are called Michael, Trevor and Frankie.
• A quick menu can be called up to switch characters, the camera pulls away into a Google Earth-style vantage point and then drops into wherever the chosen character is
• Trevor is described as having a "maniacal personality"
• Trevor is in Blaine County, a barren, rundown desert region filled with bikers, meth heads and other people from the fringes of society
• Characters can "flick off" people and people react differently depending on the area. In a rough-and-tumble
• neighbourhood the reaction will be different from someone in a posh boutique store
• Rockstar's playtester pours a trail of gas away from a vehicle and drops a zippo lighter on it, the flame travels back and causes a huge explosion.
• Franklin is seen on Vespucci Beach looking for a car he's to repossess
• Waterfront activities include a muscle beach gym
• He drops the top of the car once he gets in
• Ammu-Nation is back
• Each character has his own personality motivation and skill set
• They go about their daily business when you're not in control, so you might find them in surprising situations when you take control of them again
• Each character has a fleshed out story arc
• Complicated, multi-tiered heist missions inspired by GTA IV's Three Leaf Clover are "peppered" into the game
• Heists are a big theme
• Rockstar is addressing mission diversity in pairing characters, it showed off a mission involving all three characters
• The trio need to perform a snatch-and-grab to get the FIB off their backs
• Trevor berates security agent guarding a chopper, Michael urges him to calm down but he keeps running his mouth, he only agreed to do the mission in exchange for help springing his friend Brad out of jail.
• Franklin isn't to comfortable with Trevor
• The three change outfits and rapell down the side of a skyscraper, when they arrive players take control of Michael rapelling down, the mechanic is reminiscent of Rainbow Six Vegas
• The musical score seems to react to the action
• They extract the target by holding him hostage with one arm while pointing a gun at interrogators with the other, at that point an icon appears giving the player the option to switch character
• You can stay as Michael and try and pick of the enemies or select franklin, switch to his perspective and snipe them from afar.
• Transition is smooth and camera angle helps you adjust
• During the chase through Los Santos the player can switch to Trevor to pilot the getaway, snipe the other pilots as Franklin, or fire an assault rifle out the back of a chopper as Michael
• Rockstar is leveraging cinematic tricks learned from Max Payne 3

Honestly the only two worthwhile facts in the entire thing are the size of the game(which is insane if true) and the three playable characters(which seems interesting). Looking forward to seeing actual gameplay. Doesn't really seem like they're changing up the sandbox genre or anything.

HYYYPE =D

Easy to say that they've probably learned from the criticisms of vanilla GTAIV and are bringing the awesomeness we saw in TBOGT. Goddamn, I can't wait.

I'm going to love this game. I can put up with a lot of jank but if most of this stuff is actually realized I'm gonna be like a kid in a candy store.

"The cars hold to the ground a bit better. we thought they were big and boatlike in GTA IV, and we feel like it has really leaped forward because we're able to run a little more physics on them."

Hell yea Rockstar. Really glad they're addressing this.

Everything sounds amazing so far.

The idea of switching characters is one thing. The fact that the other two characters go about their daily lives while you're not controlling them is something else entirely.

Odds on 20FPS for half of the game?

Everything sounds great, except for the driving. I wish they had just left it as is. I don't want that Saint's Roe super grip feel.

I think if all three of the characters were white there would be some complaints too. It would have been cool to have a female lead IMO.

I feel like that too, but maybe it would be too controversial? I can see people in an uproar seeing a female committing crimes. They don't need controversy to sell the games any more. Seems like they're playing it safe and just improving (and removing) past elements. It's like we're getting three Ballad of Gay tony games in one here.
