GTA V GameInformer Discussion (11/8, 12PM EST)

Both websites Gamer.nl and InsideGamer also have interviews with Dan Houser from Rockstar.

Im not going to completely translate the Dutch interviews from Gamer.nl and InsideGamer.nl but I've received these direct quotes from the interviewer (Simon Zijlemans) himself:

Dan Houser about using three playable characters in GTAV:
Link: http://www.insidegamer.nl/artikel/101648/gta-5-insidegamer-interviewt-dan-houser-van-rockstar-games

IG: I can imagine the meeting you have, the discussions about where you're going to take the game. And then...
Dan Houser: We don’t really have those. It’s all a few emails, it’s quite weird.

IG: But the moment someone says, 'Let's do multiple characters'?
Dan doubtfully glances at his colleague
DH: Was that an email? Someone discussed it and send around a couple of emails – that was probably my brother [Sam Houser, -ed], myself, Aron and Leslie: ‘What do you think? We have to do something different. What about this?’ And someone just went: ‘Yeah, why not.’ And no one went: ‘No, let’s not.’ Everyone was like: ‘Alright, let’s go for it.’ We’ve always worked… We don’t have a lot of meetings, partially because some of us are in New York and most of us are in Schotland.

Then the designers were originally doing missions for characters as in: he would do a mission, then another character would do a mission. You know, three for him, two for him, five for him…etc. It seemed like it might be interesting and the designers were beginning to do that, and they suddenly came up with this idea: why don’t we just have more than one character on a mission. In the begin it was like this: we just want to go on a mission together. So I’m the star of the mission and when it’s my mission, you’re just the NPC. Then someone said: yeah, but why can’t I be him in this bit?

Because he could be doing something more fun, while you’re doing boring stuff. That was when the switching on-mission came on. And then we had this feature suddenly, we felt was good a storytelling device, good as an off-mission device and good as an on-mission device. We thought it was brilliant, like it was a really great feature. That was sort of up and running. But only very recently we got it working, that was the concept, and it sort of worked really janky. And now it looks good in the game.

Dan Houser about GTA in a city outside of the USA:

IG: Would a GTA in, let's say Europe or Amsterdam, would it work?
Dan Houser: I don’t know. I thought about it. A lot. Argued it every which way. I think, my own sense, speaking for myself and not for the company, is that it’s as much a product Americana… That’s such a big part of the game. You know, you could make a great game set in Amsterdam. Would it be GTA? I don’t know. We haven’t done it, so I can’t really offer a comment or an opinion on it. We’ve avoided it because we think that part of the experience of GTA is its engagement with America, or American media, American movies, American culture or whatever. Some kind of Americana is such a part of the games, that in removing that, it would bizarrely make them lose their universality.

Finally, Houser told Gamer.nl how Rockstar keeps GTA relevant. The studio doesn't think of GTA as a series, more as seperate games that happen to share
similar mechanics.

Okay those screens are astounding, my hyper has gone from 5th gear into 6th. My head will be spinning like a top on the 14th.

I agree that is not crucial, though you can apply that reasoning to a lot of things.
Is changing clothes crucial? Not really, but i'd be pissed if it wasn't there.

Some things are just fun to do because they augment the sense of immersion, like the ability to sit on a chair or a bench (which still isn't there in GTA) in Skyrim.
50% of my enjoyment, in an open world game, is virtual tourism; being able to interact, even in a trivial way, with that world, is very important to my overall enjoyment.

I always tip my hat to peds in Red Dead Redemption, for example.

Tattoos also tap into (like clothing) the matter of self expression and creativity, you want your avatar to be a bit closer to you or your idea of character, either way.
Some people kept CJ with baggy pants and rapper style clothing, others went all Didier Sachs.
These things are not singularly vital, but in the big picture they make or brake a good open world game, imo.
Oops, missed this above.

Yeah, that's a fair point. I will definitely cop to liking clothes customization. I always had Niko and Luis in a fly suit as soon as I could get one :lol

that's still in right? Can't remember if they mentioned that or not.

Damn @ those screens. The countryside really does seem like it's going to be massive. And I love the shot of Trevor in that smaller town.

Thanks much for the translation! Great stuff.

Its basically straight from the horse's mouth, the DUtch version is the translation :p

Ah, good point, haha. Appreciate it either way!

Interesting quote about the games almost not being part of a series. Always thought that it was smart for R* to do that. Especially after this prolonged generation, where you see how the weight of something like a trilogy with connecting narratives and characters and what have you can start to crush a game (Mass Effect 3 and AssCreed III say hi). Starting totally fresh frees you from all that baggage.

ehh me3 and ass3 are exceptions. plenty other games have successful trilogies and then some.

it just makes sense narrative wise for rockstar to do this, especially given how long the campaigns are in the GTA games. and i hope GTA V's campaign is just as long, if not longer.

Man, I went back to GTA 4 this week because of this hype and had one of the best moments in the game in over 200 hours of gameplay time.

It's crazy how that all played out. I was just standing there in amazement at the sight of all this unfolding. It's moments like this that make GTA one of, if not the, best series ever.

I'm going to waste dozens more hours on the game over the next few months in anticipation, I can tell. It's the only thing that's going to make the wait less painful :(

The true test of GTAV's greatness will be if the still use Euphoria, something I can see being sacrificed.

It was one of the only redeeming features of GTA 4. But I can understand that it may be the cause of the lag and movement clunkiness or whatever problems there may be. It's not the easiest to implement system out there.

If that's the case I'll gladly accept it being gone in favor of better controls and movement.

I doubt they'll ditch it. Don't think they need to really. GTA IV on foot was clunky, but that was over four years ago. Their games control much better these days.

I don't understand how exploring an ocean will be interesting.

Also holy hell at that new parachuting near a train screen.

Glorious.

I think it'll be neat, give you a nice sense of isolation and wonder if done right.
I liked Endless Ocean on the wii, plenty of shit your pants moments in the deep, too.

It would also be nuts to go into a project such as this using an expendable middleware. It uses processing power they might need...although does anyone know how much power it uses? It could be tiny.

My only concern about the scale is that in SA's countryside you could take many paths through to get to the other side.

Lots of rocky, mountainous stuff.

Would like some more hilly, flatland stuff too.

I also don't see the appeal of underwater exploration. Even boat stuff is always dull in GTA games... the less water the better as far as I'm concerned.

The only good thing about the sea in any GTA game was the easter eggs in the ocean in Vice City.

I haven't been this hyped for a game in a looooonnngg time. I can't believe they said the world is bigger than SA, IV, and RDR combined. That's insane!!

I'm confused as to how the swapping of characters work. Can you just swap at any time? Or is it linear and story based?
