Steam Greenlight: 1000 games and counting, more Greenlit every few weeks

It looks like they're trying to make the process completely automated - rank top 100 by votes, greenlight top 10 of those every month - almost no screening required.

I disagree with that approach. I think Greenlight needs more human eyes to approve games more rapidly based on a mixture of both the old process and user votes. Nothing's worse than seeing deserving, fully finished titles miss the cross-promotion opportunities of their launch window because they're stuck in Greenlight submission hell.
Is there discussion/information from Valve about this, somewhere linkable?

Nothing I've seen except the Greenlight news and about sections.

Maybe I'm too impatient and the frustration of seeing finished, fully-featured games not getting the necessary attention on Greenlight is getting to me. Maybe five releases and 26 greenlit projects in two and a half months of Greenlight going live is a good pace for Steam compared to how it was before, I don't know.

I guess I'm not seeing the evidence that they are converting it into an automatic process. Maybe I'm just missing it.

I did, however, notice this:
Who should submit their games to Steam Greenlight? Is there another way to submit my game to Steam?

Steam Greenlight has replaced our previous submission process. Any developer or publisher who is new to Steam and interested in submitting their game to the platform should submit their game through Steam Greenlight.
That's probably been there for a while, but it is interesting. I wonder if that half explains why some developers who ALREADY had games on Steam are still having to go through the process.

Yeah, seeing half of dtp's catalogue on Greenlight is pretty weird. That's an established international publisher who simply shouldn't have any trouble getting directly onto Steam.

Yeah this is where things are a bit muddy. There are developers like Reverb and DTP who should not have to go through Greenlight, and still we are seeing plenty of other releases go through the normal submission route(the Sugar Cube release for example.)

My only guess is that maybe the stuff by dtp was already denied by Steam and they thought Greenlight might give them another chance.

At this rate it doesn't look like we will be able to make it in by the end of the year which is really unfortunate.

Maia is now on Greenlight as a concept.

It's a god game where you help a colony survive, influenced by Dungeon Keeper, Theme Hospital, Dwarf Fortress and Sci-Fi - and it's looking really good so far!

Hopefully the Kickstarter gets the interest it needs to get funded.

This really is getting a bit bizarre. Wadjet Eye is one of the premier point-and-click studios in the PC space (any space, really), and they still have to submit stuff through Greenlight?
Do they have games on Steam already? If not, the Steam store says that everyone must use Greenlight, as I quoted. If they DO have games on Steam already then I don't know. Maybe Valve rejected one of their games.

Yeah this really makes no sense. Resonance is already on Steam, you'd think they wouldn't have to do this since they've done business before. Someone needs to be kicked for this.

Oh. Maybe Valve is randomly making certain people do it then, or maybe they're taking too long to respond so companies are doing it themselves, or maybe companies are doing it for extra publicity or to try to influence Valve.

I don't know how easy it was for indie developers or small companies with one game on Steam to get a second game on Steam before Greenlight, though, so I'm just guessing.

Who knows. In any case, if 10 people who see the game on Greenlight decide to pre-order it direct from their website, then they'll have broken even at the very least, so it's probably not a major investment.

Agree that it's strange seeing some of the publishers that are putting things on Greenlight though, including dtp.

Interesting, so Steam is actively turning away games from companies who already published games on Steam if they feel they won't sell well enough? That seems like it could bode ill for niche market games. Am I missing something? :/

I don't think Valve actively turns away games that might be niche, because it's not like they can lose money on unsold copies, or have to pay for advertising/shelf space. I think this is just a once-off blunder by an intern or something. That said, we don't really have enough information to conclusively call that Valve is actively spurning already established indie games.

Actually I'd like to blame Dejobaan for why this new policy of not just allowing vetted publishers instant approval was put in place.

I'm only mildly annoyed over the quality of those two alpha quality games, since I got them as part of Potato Sack, which did have plenty of gems to justify the price.

I've been on greenlight since two days after the fee went live, and I have the joy of having no clue how many votes I've gotten.

Here's my Game: Love+.

And that's really all the information I have to work with.

Are there any other GAFfers trying to get greenlit? What's your experience with it?

Are you talking in terms of gameplay/visual quality, or in terms of bugs? The visual design of those games looks quite reasonable to me (one looks similar to AAAAAA for instance), but I can understand if they were super buggy or something.

No, as in the gameplay wasn't even remotely well thought out or polished, and the developer openly acknowledged it was a work in progress with little content.

Love+ reminds of a game. An innocent and not so innocent game. About virtual waifus. Just thought you should know.

The next Dejobaan game is already on Steam. It is hidden because it is in beta.

Gemini Rue was one of the most well-known cases of Valve rejecting a quality game multiple times and people wondering what the hell was going on. I guess they hate AGS games, or maybe they were right and their games sell very poorly :(

Hey mang, TWEOTW is not alpha quality. It was a pretty decent Katamari clone, surely it doesn't have the best graphics nor the biggest amount of content but the gameplay was sound and the game was fun in its own quirky way.

Beat the Beat isn't finished yet, though. It seems the game is being finished now by another studio while they work on their new title. It truly looks like they were friends with someone at Valve or something like that, since Steam didn't carry non-finished games back then and they got a lot of attention thanks to being featured in the Potato Sack. Really fishy.

The Wonderful End of the World was also their first game on steam wasn't it? Pretty random of you to link to it as your explanation. As in there's no way they allowed it instant approval.

Just saw this. What the hell? Why can't one of the best PnC houses of the last 10 years get their game on Steam? Especially with 6 fantastic titles already on there.

I'll vote for it of course. Primordia looks like it could be their best work yet, which would certainly be an accomplishment after the stellar Gemini Rue. It's just so ridiculous though.

Yeah someone in Valve needs to realize that graphs and charts mean ABSOLUTE JACKSHIT without reference numbers. God if someone showed this to my old Stats prof or something he would probably backhand them.

We are also on Greenlight trying to help the La-Mulana developers get on Steam. We are acting as the publisher and I basically promised to do everything I could to push the game through to Steam(this was before Greenlight was even announced.) After being turned down several times they basically just told us to stop submitting and wait for Greenlight.

The guys at NIGORO are obviously a little annoyed at how the entire process has gone but fortunately understand that it is out of our hands. Which isn't really a great situation to be stuck in as for all intents and purposes we are their publisher.

Won't you get in trouble for violating trademarks used by Konami for using that game name? Or do you plan to restrict sales of your game to areas outside Japan?

Huh, I bought this from your website some years ago. Rather enjoyed it back then. I think it was just called Love at the time? I'll give you a vote to bump up your graphs.

Just went through my e-mail to find the reply I got from you for buying the game and saw this "(p.s.) Thanks for the extra buck. It was entirely unnecessary and entirely awesome. Let me know if you ever need anything. :p" Wonder what I should demand from you..,

EDIT 2: I seriously have no idea what game I wanted greenlight, I think I must have been spaced out or something.
Regardless even if Sexy Beach isn't on greenlight it's the game America needs.
