Hey Takao. Are those new BD sets worth buying... are they superior to the Dragon Boxes?

They're supposedly really, really good. Their quality compared the Dragon Boxes is really up to colour preferences. Though, as the BD sets are made on Funimation's masters, there are things like the Next Episode Previews, and such that are MIA.

They're good, and if you can't wait for the eventual Toei remaster I'd say get them. Though, I'd say maybe wait until Funimation starts bundling the 17 episode sets together.

Serious question. I know everyone says that GT is awful, but I've watched all of Z and I'm halfway through DB now (never seen the whole thing). Is GT really that bad? Like, unwatchable bad? For what its worth, even though it dragged on tremendously I did somewhat like the Buu arc.

Like Takao said, it's not 100% straight bad, it has some good ideas, but it's easily the weakest link in the franchise by a good margin. Like, even the animation quality was really poor throughout the entire thing, like it had 5% of DBZ's budget.

GT also had problems with tone. The first 13 eps tried to be like Dragon Ball, while the rest is basically a poor rehash of DBZ. It tried to have its cake and eat it and it didn't work out, to say the least.

A highlight I thought was the Super 17 arc, but it didn't really do enough with it. I also never thought Bebi or the Shenrons were that good as villains go.

And like I said, it had good ideas, like bringing back the whole Tuffle vs. Saiyan idea, or toying with the idea of the heroes overusing the Dragon Balls. But it never really did anything cool or worthwhile with those ideas, unfortunately. Characters are also woefully underused, even Trunks who is initially part of the main trio. Vegeta, Gohan, Goten, Trunks, etc. all become basically wimps, although Vegeta sort of come backs right at the end of the series.

That reminds me, it's also hurt by its flagrant disregard of DB canon. Pure blooded saiyans have the same style of hair their entire lives? Not any more! Say hello to mustached grandpa Vegeta! Eugh. It hurts to think of that.

Yeah, unless you have money to burn, best to wait out until the sets drop in price or get bundled together.

the end of dragonball gt was a very fitting and nice ending to the greatest anime hero ever. I liked it far more than dbz's ending.
the rest ofgt was just bad, though

Nappa has a mustache too. Kinda hard to think he was born with one. Also Vegeta's father had a mustache, and Broly's father didn't have one when he was young but had one in the present, although I don't know if Toriyama designed these two.

Yeah, aside from the mustache there was still the fact that his hair was a lot shorter.

I'm going to start watching GT for the first time so I could keep up with the Daizex podcast. Between this and Sonic 06... ugh.

Nicktoons finally aired episode 92 of the dub (aka Cell Juniors and Gohan finally going SS2.) So uh, yay! I'm probably the only one that watches the dub episodes as they come out...

I would have missed it if not for randomly browsing. American kids TV scheduling is so fickle sometimes. I honestly thought the series had finished after new episodes stopped airing Wednesdays and Thursdays a few weeks ago, but nope, the show just went on a short random hiatus. According to Wiki, I missed an ep on Friday November 25, but otherwise this was a new episode tonight, and not only that, there's a new episode every weekday this week... as well as January 1. What.

This is why Toonami was great. Consistency. Not random rescheduling and hiatuses.

Anyways I saw some more GT commercials and the whole situations get weirder and weirder. Why would they skip Buu? Some of it is pretty crucial to GT...

Well, hey at least Nicktoons won't be skipping the Black Star saga!

But they will be airing the old Toonami dub with the Menza score...

I just found out that episode 98 of Kai will not be broadcast on Nicktoons, but will instead be an online-exclusive. Kai's death is so much more entertaining than the product itself.

Kai "proper" (meaning sans Trunks future "epilogue") just finished up on Nicktoons and... wow. That was abrupt. It wasn't as bad as I'd heard ("last scene is Chi-Chi crying!!") but still, even for the layperson I have to imagine it was seriously lacking.

Now that I can think about Kai as a whole, while I really loved it for rekindling my own interest in Dragon Ball Z, and although I love its brevity and score, I think I have a better appreciation for Z itself now, in all its fillery glory. Instead of the Kai sets, I'll be waiting until the Funi Blu-rays get decently far into the series and get those instead. If you had asked me six months ago which I would have gone for, I would have definitely said Kai.

GT is just pure shit.

Mostly because they screwed up the characters and prior established power levels, made goku a kid and was weaker, nerfed gohan, made vegeta kinda useless etc....

Count me in as someone who likes GT. Then again I never took the story of DB/DBZ all that seriously anyway, so I'm hardly bothered by inconsistencies. It's fun enough to watch, with some cool designs and powerups later on.

I'm surprised that Nicktoons is going to skip to GT after the DBZ Kai series...

I can't wait for the confusions of characters begin.

I remember seeing GT during the Toonami era, and disliked it...

Weird characters, plots and all... Especially with Goku being a kid and Gohan being even more useless!

I would have been fine with this if they could have nailed the charm of the original DB series... it was obvious they weren't really worried about power levels or anything too much. The setups really felt like old school DB, but it was just never funny or charming, so the show just fell flat on its face since it could no longer cater to either crowd.

I think it's worth watching once (though the latter portion of the series was a real grind to get through), but I'm glad I never ended up buying them to watch them for my first time (which I almost did several times).

Ok, I'm probably gonna Import some DB stuff. Only 1 Kai Season Set out so far? What region are the BDs?

Should I pick up the Movies/DB/GT sets also, or hold out and hope for the DBOX?

Funimation's DBZ Kai Blus are region free.

The current releases for DB, GT and the movies are more or less fine. I don't think we'll be seeing Dragon Box releases for those because, unlike DBZ and its orange bricks, all of those are "good enough".

Kai's gonna be on Saban's new zombie block on The CW. New episodes will premiere this Saturday, and will likely be as edited as they were on Toonzai. Head to MyVortexx.com for show times.

Kai lives!?!

Mere days after Toshio Furukawa (Piccolo)’s cryptic tweets about finishing up a mysterious recording session, Mayumi Tanaka (Kuririn) has let slip via her blog just what exactly it was: a continuation of Dragon Ball Kai… with a hitch.

It won’t be aired in Japan, but overseas, Dragon Ball Kai is continuing.
Right now, we are recording the part at the Tenka’ichi Budōkai, where Goten and Trunks infiltrate the adults’ division by one standing on the other’s shoulders.
The image is definitely clearer than before.
We talked about how we want it to air in Japan, too.
— Mayumi

This is yet another twist in the Kai saga, which saw the show conclude after only the Cell arc, a scandal that resulted in the replacement of nearly the entire score, and a natural disaster that prevented its final episode from being broadcast. And with partial foreign funding of the upcoming Dragon Ball Z movie, there is the tantalizing possibility that overseas rights-holders wanted the Buu arc badly enough to help finance it. In the absence of an official statement from any of the relevant entities, however, we can merely speculate.

The only question that remains is, why record the dialogue in Japanese if the show will not be broadcast in Japan? It seems like a great deal of trouble to go to simply to maintain consistency in home releases abroad, so perhaps the show may eventually see daylight in Japan, in one form or another. Only time will tell.

Please think of the children, any sort of male/female interaction is evil and will send them to hell.

So the UK is getting Kai on TV, there's a lot of speculation this could be the long fabled alternate English dub produced in my Canadaland. Will that be the case? DUN DUN DUN

I'm watching kai now for the first time. The pacing is much better than Z, but I'm missing the original (Japanese) soundtrack. I heard that the new music was plagiarized and they eventually brought back the original score. Around what episode does that kick in? I'm watching the funimation version right now.

And on top of that, a couple of the English Dragon Souls > original Japanese Dragon Soul. :O

Also: Ginyu Tokusentai/Ginyu Force Rules > whatever crap they had originally.
