i've been begging for over 5 years.
Now he has straps to pull, right?

That was very kind of the officer involved.

I always hated how juvenile some people are in hating the police, especially some people found in gaf threads. They are still just people. They are capable of kindness, just as much as being an asshole sometimes.

This is great. One thing I don't get though: the picture is taken right in front of the shoe store. The article says that "The officer disappeared for a moment, then returned with a new pair of boots, and knelt to help the man put them on", but to me it looks like he took the homeless man with him?

Twist: the homeless man was actually an ex-cop who was fired one day before retirement due to the death of his partner which was actually set up by his dads old partner (they were both policemen) who was involves with the killing of the homeless man's dad as the dad was going to bust him for being a crooked cop with the help of a buxom yet cold district attorney who had just been promoted and was taking over the spot from her old mentor, a woman who was trying to sabotage her through internal contacts in order to have her son become the DA so that he could turn a blind eye to the crooked dealings of the corrupt cop.

I love how everyone is shocked that the photo went viral. Like its surprising that people really like it when others show kindness for reason.

The problem with this is that over the course of my life time I have yet to meet a nice cop. Not sure if you're from the US but over here they are 90% self righteous assholes. They are not here to serve and protect but to intimidate and pester. I can pull up about a million articles of power abuse by police if you'd like.

I'm not a teenager that says fuck the cops either, I'm 31, I pay my taxes and do not feel safe nor protected by the presence of police.

I see that homeless guy sometimes on Broadway. I'm pretty sure I've seen him without shoes since this photo was taken. He's either severely mentally ill or a very committed actor.

I thought this was going to be a "gotcha" thread about police brutality (give boots == kicking). nice to see if was really someone doing a good deed!

Not to sound dumb, but if everyone did something nice like that once in a while, I bet the world would be a nicer place to live then it already is.

EDIT: it would be a kind gesture regardless of it was a cop or not

You have to like what NYPD Officer Larry DePrimo did for a barefoot man in Manhattan one frigid night this month. In fact, more than 260,000 Facebook users have "liked" DePrimo's actions, a number that's growing every day.

After a tourist from Arizona snapped a photo of DePrimo, of Holbrook, giving the man socks and boots to ward off the cold, the image became an instant hit on the NYPD's Facebook page.

As of late Wednesday, the photo had been shared 47,716 times, boosting subscribers to the department's 5-month-old page by 7,000, to 95,000, officials said.

"I had two pairs of wool winter socks and combat boots, and I was cold," DePrimo, 25, said Wednesday, recalling the night of Nov. 14, when he encountered an unidentified, shoeless man on the sidewalk on Seventh Avenue near 44th Street.

DePrimo offered to get him socks and shoes.

"I never had a pair of shoes," the man replied, according to DePrimo, who's assigned to the Sixth Precinct and has been on the force nearly three years.

The officer walked to a Skechers store on 42nd Street and shelled out $75 for insulated winter boots and thermal socks. He returned to the man, knelt down and put the footwear on him.

"He smiled from ear to ear," DePrimo said. "It was like you gave him a million dollars."

The officer asked the man if he wanted a cup of coffee, but he graciously declined and went on his way.

"I didn't think anything of it," DePrimo said of his generosity.

But during dinner that night, he got a text message from a friend. The photo had gone viral.

"I was absolutely shocked," he said.
Of course some people say that the homeless dude was hustling by hanging around a shoe store with bare feet, but even so it's a nice gesture by the cop.

I'd like to pretend that the NYPD didn't plan this as viral marketing to heighten their image, but between the no crime thing the other day and this...It's too convenient.

Yeah because a police officer doing something good is inconceivable.

smh

Read the link smartass. The cop was genuine, the "homeless" guy would be the scammer as some people claim to see him barefooted on differrent occasions at the store.

how could there possibly be an american man that has never owned a pair of shoes? aren't they given to charities and homeless shelters?

edit: nice story though.

That throwing stick stunt of yours has boomeranged on us.
Maybe, but having seen some of the homeless people in that city, I'm not inclined to assume it's a scam.

Yeah, I wonder how many truly homeless people some of you have actually interacted with, as opposed to mere panhandlers.

Not a scam, this was the original post on Facebook:

Jennifer Foster of Florence, AZ was visiting Times Square with her husband Nov. 14 when they saw a shoeless man asking for change. She writes, “Right when I was about to approach, one of your officers came up behind him. The officer said, ‘I have these size 12 boots for you, they are all-weather. Let’s put them on and take care of you.’ The officer squatted down on the ground and proceeded to put socks and the new boots on this man. The officer expected NOTHING in return and did not know I was watching*. I have been in law enforcement for 17 years. I was never so impressed in my life. I did not get the officer’s name. It is important, I think, for all of us to remember the real reason we are in this line of work. The reminder this officer gave to our profession in his presentation of human kindness has not been lost on myself or any of the Arizona law enforcement officials with whom this story has been shared.”
Our thanks to the Fosters for their attention and appreciation, and especially to this officer, who remains anonymous.

Obviously, they since tracked down the officer and identified him.
