Black Ops II Gets To $1 Billion In Sales in 15 days

One Day Quicker Than Modern Warfare 3
And two days faster than the Avatar movie, in a frankly bizarre comparison.

Worried that Activision’s latest shooter – Black Ops II – isn’t selling well? Don’t be, it’s doing just fine – you can relax now.
In a press release issued this lunch time, Bobby Kotick has been jumping up and down in celebration that Mason’s latest adventure reached a billion dollars (a BILLION) in a day less than it took Modern Warfare 3 to reach the same lofty height.

And – amusingly and somewhat bizarrely – the same PR spouts that that’s two days faster than it took James Cameron’s wandering epic Avatar to get to that magical number.

“The release of Call of Duty has been one of the most significant entertainment events of each of the last six years,” said Bobby, CEO of the company. He goes onto say words like “cumulative” and “combined” but essentially he’s saying it’s selling like crazy.

The franchise has sold more (in terms of theatrical box office receipts) than the Harry Potter and Star Wars movies, showing that gaming really is the biggest entertainment thing ever.

“It is incredibly humbling and gratifying to be a part of it,” says Activision’s Eric Hirshberg, as part of the albeit not terribly humble mailer.

wew, I was scared for a second there.

multiplayer seems the same since 4 (just with A LOT more pop ups stroking your ego). I still prefer tf2.

I guess this is still a thing.

Haven't even wasted a thought on Black Ops since I touched Far Cry, I stopped shortly after the Afghanistan missions.

If I ever post something in Japanese which I don't understand, please BAN me.
Well deserved.

Best CoD single player campaign since Call of Duty 4.

Let's not forget the $500 the Wii U version brought in.

lol.

I guess you could argue about how this is bad for the industry, but at the end of the day, multiplayer is addicting as hell and a blast to play. So who cares?

I do wonder at what point will this all slow down?

I'm shocked there's no franchise fatigue yet. He's an asshole, but Bobby Kotick knows how to make money, that's for sure.

Goddamn industry ruining bullshit.

Now every other AAA is some derivation of modern warfare. Sickening. Trend to continue into perpetuity.

After skipping a year, I decided to buy it. Had some fun, but still managed to get completely burned out in about the same time frame that it took them to make that cool billion. I admit COD can still be fun for awhile every now and then, but man is it ever ran into the ground. Hey, people apparently still love the hell out of it, though. What do you do?

Concurrent multiplayer players are supposedly down from MW3 during the similar period of time, but that's anecdotal evidence and doesn't take into account the YOY decline in gaming NPD has noted.

Edit: haha look at all these sour grapes from gaffers. Blops2 actually does some cool stuff that moves the genre forward.

I'd imagine that Arena Shooters will be replaced by, or evolve into, larger scaled experiences.
I'm not sure if COD can go to a larger scale without losing its feel.

It can with next gen systems which is right around the corner. But you can't turn the franchise into Battlefield. They'd have to do something a lot different. But if the same formula keeps on working, why change? Just give the damn series a new and improved engine and you'll have people lined up and excited.

How? COD mightn't be the most ambitious franchise but they're consistently well made for what they are.

Factor in the disparity between the amount this series makes and what arguably better games make and I think you have answered your own question.

Why?

They're good games.

High production values yes, not a high quality game IMO.
Playing the COD series is the equivalent of discovering a Russian nesting doll in reverse.

Unless another developer really steps up it's game with the FPS genre CoD will do well and continue breaking records for the next gen if you ask me. People will definitely settle for the same experiences with better looking graphics.

These games are packed with features which is great, but the gunplay is still ass and no challenge so no I probably won't ever like the series

I don't understand why people hate on them for being successful.

Industry ruining? Really? What do you expect them to do? Release one or two games and step aside from what makes them millions of dollars each year?

I guess but in type of entertainment, when is the best thing also the most popular? COD at least has the advantage of being the best at what it does.
