Euro-GAF: explain yourself! (peanut butter)

I read this bit the other day and was quite fascinated by it:

Bad News For U.S. Farmers: Europeans Still Don't Eat Much Peanut Butter

Despite the best efforts of U.S. peanut farmers, Europeans still don't eat much peanut butter.

...

In fact, for more than 20 years, U.S. peanut farmers have been running ads to try to get Europeans to try peanut butter, according to Patrick Archer, president of the American Peanut Council.

There's been some growth, especially in the Netherlands, UK, and Germany, Archer told me. But the EU is still a tiny, tiny market for U.S. peanut butter. The average European still eats less than one tablespoon of U.S. peanut butter in an entire year. That's not nearly enough to make a dent in the glut.

What's the story? If not peanut butter, then what the heck do you put on bread with your jelly?

First post nails it.

Why eat bizarre legume when you can eat hazelnut-chocolate spread from Heaven?

Wait, the "jelly" in peanut butter and jelly is actually jam? ewww, that sounds nasty.

I like peanut butter but I dunno, just vary rarely buy it. Tempted to buy some now, haven't had it in a long time.

because in the netherlands we have this

The Netherlands isn't a problem for US peanut farmers, it being one of the few countries that does consume a significant amount of it. And while I have no idea where Calvé sources their peanuts from, the US is the largest exporter of peanuts, so it seems likely they import some of their supply from there. Other large exporters are apparently Argentina, Sudan, Senegal and Brazil.

Peanut butter is revolting. Whenever I hear of the American fixation with peanut butter and 'jelly' sandwiches it makes my stomach turn. Why ruin a perfectly good jam sandwich by putting peanut butter in it?

Because peanut butter is delicious and the problem to be eliminated is actually the jam.

I tend to have Ham/Cheese or Chicken/Bacon/Salad sandwiches over here.

Peanut Butter/Jello combination is fucking stupid, and is probably one of the many cores explaining your troubled society.

Maybe for breakfast, but what do you pack your 4 year-old when she goes off to school?

Butter and jelly would just make a sloppy, mushy sandwich by lunchtime.

No it doesn't, I used to get jam & butter sandwiches to take to school & they were fine. Perhaps they end up soggy messes because cheap American bread is terrible?

All that sugar though. It's more of a cake frosting than nut butter spread to me.

Peanut butter ain't exactly healthy either. I imagine most people spread 400+ calories worth of peanut butter onto one sandwich.

Peanut butter tastes awesome though.

Probably a useless question, but what kind of taste does peanut butter have?

Like a peanut?

Some varieties have sugar added to it, but I buy mine all natural.

Peanutty goodness in a spreadable form.

High in calories, but also relatively high in protein.

Also:

Health benefits

Peanut butter has a high level of monounsaturated fats and resveratrol.[6] Peanut butter (and peanuts) provides protein, vitamins B3 and E, magnesium, folate, dietary fiber, arginine,[7] and high levels of the antioxidant p-coumaric acid.
