Final Nintendo Power cover revealed

I only just realized you're able to order the issues from the official site.

Just placed an order for two. Not sure what'll happen though since the title on the product page is "Nintendo Power December 2012 (Subscriber Cover) ***Sold Out***"

They took my money though, so we'll see.

Edit: I see the post above mine addresses this too.

Yeah, I went ahead and ordered one of each. If I get a subscribers copy I'll keep it for posterity, otherwise I'll just enjoy the newstand copy like I did with so many other issues of NP that came before.

Man this is making me nostalgic in a bittersweet way.

My first issue was way back when Mario Party 2 was on the cover, and I've been subscribed ever since. Even if I've started to get my news more and more from the internet, it's still sad to see it go. Still, this issue looks to be the send off the magazine deserves.

Just picked up my copy. Haven't read it yet, but the poster is really something special. Just at a glance, I noticed the SSBB cover is the first one Future published, heh. I need to go check which was the last issue I got before I stopped subscribing. I know the OoT cover was my first. November '98, if I remember right.

edit: it was actually August '98, crazy enough. I guess the OoT one always sticks out to me because it was such a big deal and it was so soon after I began subbing.

Straight through the heart. The subscriber version even has a white spine instead of black to match the other issues.

:((((((((((((((((((

I bought a couple extra copies: One to open, some for the family, and one to rip open and scan as a PDF.

It's bittersweet owning copies of the last 50 or so issues as PDFs. Sure, I can read them all on my tablet, but I really wish NP had made the transition into the digital medium.

I actually got a little chocked up at the comic. Very well done. NP will be missed. And with that, checking my mail is now just another chore.

Sad to see this mag go. I used to have a subscription when I was a kid, read it all the time, but it ran out in the N64 days and I never re-upped. I'll probably pick up a final issue sometime soon. Kind of wish it was switching to an online-only mag, but with giants around, the competition would be a bit too stiff.

Who else remembers the Donkey Kong Country and N64 promo VHS tapes?

Reading these reactions is driving me nuts, as I'm still waiting for my subscriber edition to arrive :/ I'm about ready to run out and buy one off the shelf.

Man, I think I still have the DKC one somewhere. It sure built up my own hype for the game. I probably watched it once a day for two weeks.

Sad to see NP go I had a subscription from the mid to late 90's stopped in the end of the N64 era and the beginning of the GC era. I subscribed back up when they gave away the OOT master quest disc and the legend of Zelda Collectors disc for the GC as subscription bonuses (I basically just wanted the Zelda games NP was just something I would flip through at that point still it was nice).

Since those two years I haven't been a subscriber, I think I maybe have bought one or two issues (I know I bought the 200th not sure if I bought another one). NP was a big part of my childhood gaming, use to get a lot of my news from it (Remember getting the VHS tapes for N64 stuff). Its a bitter sweet thing as getting your gaming news from the internet is great, every day you get new stuff and you can get reviews from so many sources.

But getting a monthly overload of info was a unique experience, reading the reviews for games and looking at upcoming games all in one shot. I don't know it was something that as a kid you could read one of those mags for hours on end and talk about it with your friends all day. Also print magazines being the main source of info back then made them seem official

Overall its a new era, no way magazines can compete with the internet now esp with tablets allowing for online subs. Just the changing of the guard, still I liked that aspect of my childhood.

The pangs of sadness definitely got to me while reading through the issue. Didn't pore over every word (I'll do that later), but some of the letters and the Editor reminiscing ("Power Players") hit me flat in the tear ducts.

Finally found a copy. My local Walgreens Pharmacy had 1 left. I haven't bought a Nintendo Power in years but, it's sad to see it end :/

I've read NP since the first issue, but don't own them all sadly as I never collected them. I have a lot of memories thankfully that will always be with me, thanks to everyone who worked at NP over the years.

Also that comic really got me :( Not only in NP being done, but that it really hit home with how much gaming has been a part of my life and will continue with my children.

Mario 64 isn't that good of a Mario game and SMB3 isn't as good as World.

And Link to the Past is better than all three of those I just mentioned. Truth bombs!

World isn't half as good a platformer (the genre it belongs in) as 3, and Link's Awakening is the better Zelda.

Future won't ship to the UK. Is there anyone who could buy this and post it to me? I can PayPal the $$$. Please PM me if possible. Thanks in advance!

Got my copy and I am going to get it framed soon enough too. It's a piece of history. Good bye Nintendo Power, I will truly miss you. :(

I ordered the last issue and the previous 2 issues online. Hopefully it'll get here soon. I was previously a subscriber but my subscription lapsed over the summer. Looking forward to it.

I got my issue a few days ago, I almost don't want to know that it's the final issue, instead just wonder why I didn't get any more issues.

I let the cover get spoiled for me and then bailed out of anything discussing this, but nothing could prepare me for those final couple of pages.

Holy crap. *tears*

Seriously, got my issue in the mail today, read through it, and have no shame in admitting that I'm sitting here crying my eyes out.

As I had mentioned up-thread, been subscribing since issue 32, and later went back and got all of the previous issues, as well as all of the issues of the Fun Club News other than the first one (which has gone for over $100 the couple of times I've seen it show up. One of these days I'll get it though), but, since Nintendo stopped publishing the magazine in 2007 (coupled with the closing of their message boards), I've just felt disconnected from the magazine. I mean, I've kept my subscription going the entire time - part because I wanted to, and part just because I knew I would feel bad if/when it ended and I wasn't subscribing. And, honestly, a number of the recent issues are just sitting around still in their original wrapping. So, it's not that I can even say it hasn't been as good - since I just haven't even read them like I used to - it's just that, as I said, I've kind of felt disconnected from it since Nintendo had stopped publishing it, and kind of felt like this day was just a matter of time and a foregone conclusion.

Still, knowing the issues would keep coming every month was still a reassuring thing. I had been getting them every month for nearly 21 years, and for much of that time it was such a momentous happening. Kind of went over all of that in my earlier posts, so not going to wax poetic yet again. But, even though it wasn't the same as it used to be for me, it was still something that made me happy to know I would keep getting. And, given all that, kind of kicking myself I hadn't submitted anything to it (but then, that was always kind of a recurring theme for me. I never really got around to sending in for any of the contest things, and, the only thing I ever got in the magazine for was beating Ocarina of Time with 3 hearts and 0 deaths (and before the whole extra bottle trick was really known either), while there were many other times I could have if I had just gotten around to sending stuff in. Ah well.

But, all that said, there were a number of heart-wrenching moments in that final issue. I kind of feel like, frankly, they could have skipped doing the reviews and any of that other stuff, and just focused on a recap of the history of the magazine. But then, of course, it wouldn't really be Nintendo Power without information about games to read about as well.

I know I've kind of made things seem bad about the past 5 years, but, I know we have people around here who have been involved in that time, and I am thankful for that as well. Since, without them, this time would have came even more suddenly 5 years ago. And, surviving another 5 years in the current environment isn't that bad of a thing. So, at least it kept those issues coming until now, and allowed for some proper closure to the magazine.

And, aside from that ever-elusive Fun Club News Issue 1, as far as the rest, including all of the issues of Nintendo Power,
I guess Max's words fit pretty well
. And, I really do go back and read all of my older issues as well. I'm still playing many of those games, and discovering even more of them, after all, and, even with all of the resources out there now, those issues of Nintendo Power are still some of the best places to go as far as information about those games. And I am very thankful to have them, and to have gone through everything over the past 20+ years.

Well, I read through mine over the weekend. Terrific way to say goodbye. The year-by-year recap brought back all my fondest memories of growing up with Nintendo. My first issue was #4, but somehow my first couple mags were lost in my careless kid days, so it was neat to see a few of those pages again.

Nintendo Power turned me on to a lot of games I would never have known about otherwise. My family couldn't afford a lot in the way of gaming, but my parents tried really hard to let me rent something once a week. NP was my buyers'/renters' guide for every single game I played.

Hard to describe how it felt reading the very last issue. It was bitter since most all of the regular features were missing, which just felt so wrong. But it was sweet because it's pretty clear the staff put their best, most honest effort forward in saying farewell.

Nothing can last forever.

Thanks for everything, Nintendo Power.

I wish they had done something else instead of the top 258 games. Such a long and poorly defended list (having very few write-ups) felt superfluous and not particularly meaningful. Everything else in the issue I appreciated.

Got mine late last week at a store, awesome final issue. The sentiment of the Nester comic was perfectly written, couldn't have said it better myself. I just wish it would have emulated the original's art style more closely, but that's just a minor personal preference. But yeah, seriously great send off and I'm glad I still own an extensive NP library. I can't think of many must have installments that I still need to get after getting my Earthbound Player's guide from my EB purchase this past spring. Fave players guides will always be for SMB 3, "Mario Mania"/SMW, and Super Metroid and now EB. All time fave covers are for Mega Man 2, SMB 3, issue #1/final issue tied, Duck Tales, and winter '98 special cover for OoT.

Edit: And I would definitely support a kickstarter.

Man, talk about the end of an era. I've been keeping my eyes peeled at local magazine racks in book stores and grocery stores, but I've yet to find a copy of the final issue. I'll be kind of bummed if I can't find one before they become scalper-bait and cost 5-10 times more than newsstand price on ebay.

I can't even come close to another poster's little NP retrospective, but I can remember when I first subscribed... Though I can't recall what issue number it was, I vividly recall the cover of the first issue I got in the mail; Super-C for NES. I stayed subscribed for years after that. In fact, I still have huge stacks of old issues sitting in my now-abandoned bedroom at my parents' house.

UPDATE: It was issue 12... Holy crap, had no idea I got hooked that early!

For a while, I used to write letters to the Player's Pulse at least once a week. Somehow I always had something to write about. Sometimes there were questions, other times I was simply rambling on about why I loved this game or that game. I always got a reply back, and as a little kid, that always made my day. I actually still have a folder somewhere with all of the letters I got back from NP. I never made it into the mag or anything, but that didn't matter much to me.

And of course, when NP started the Super Power Club and had the little catalog of swag I could buy, I gobbled it right up. I have all sorts of random trinkets like the vinyl Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong figurines, the "DK Jamz" CD, a few other things I can't think of I'm sure. That's part of why I love that Nintendo brought the Club to the states. It lets me get my hands on the same sort of cool stuff, this time in exchange for registering the games and systems of theirs I buy.

At any rate, I'll miss NP. Though I did stop renewing my subscription somewhere along the way, I never stopped being a Nintendo fan; I hopefully never will!

One thing I wonder, and it might have already been addressed, but why wasn't a digital version or a website tried before completely shutting down Nintendo Power? Maybe Future isn't keen on digital publications, but it could have helped stop the bleeding.

Future wanted to do it digitally. Nintendo said no. :(

Aww, so cool. I was a subscriber from issue #1 up through somewhere in the low 100s. I actually gave away a ton of my back issues in the Free to a Good Home thread. I'm gonna have to keep an eye out for this final issue.

Childhood, why are you leaving?

My first issue was the Super Mario Brothers 3 special issue. The subscription at the time came with a free game. I had no idea what it could be as I ran to the mailbox every day in the middle of the second grade.

Where was my first issue? Where was my game? It felt like an enternity.

Finally, the issue came, and so did my game.

I read Nintendo Power for years. Probably until the end of the SNES era. Ages 8-13. The prime time for video games (as those of us in our late 20's and early 30's, games really grew up with us). Memories of curling up with the newest issue and dreaming of games I would never actually play due to not being able to afford them are priceless memories of an innocent youth.

Not only that, the free game was Dragon Warrior
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDLfm4nybvc

That game started my love affair with RPG's that still carries over to this day.

RIP Nintendo Power, but for all of us RIP another innocent part of our childhood.

I haven't seen them do anything special for the subscribers since issue #1...
The lack of that kind of stuff is exactly why their numbers dwindled.

Can you remember the last time you renewed and had a choice of strategy guides? I don't.

The last cover is great, to bad the magazine has been terrible for a long time now.

I am sad to see Nintendo Power go but in reality it died when Future took over in 2007.

I get what you're saying, but for some of us the magazine was special enough and worth supporting.

Died or continued the increase in quality that started with the redesign when they decided to age-up with their readers.
