I really have to wonder what SE's expectations are for this. I know they're trying to win back people who played XIII but not XIII-2.

Considering the short development cycle, and along with the shoddy production values in the trailer, they must have low expectations for this.

The financial resources allocated to this seem even lower than XIII-2.

This thread's making me want to boot up 13 again.. krist that game is good.

I'm curious to see how A Realm Reborn will perform. If it under performs it will be a massive blow for SE and it may affect next gen decisions. On the other hand if Lightning Returns flops (quite possible) i don't think it will affect them much since the cost for this game seems remarkably low.
It's a subscription based MMO with a huuuge budget. I don't see it doing anything but underperforming. At this point I'm wondering about the impact its relative failure will have.

Instead of Fantasy, Mechanical, and Gothic, it's more like Forgettable, Mundane, and Garish.

HA HA

no seriously, they have a whole year to make up for this.

They need to call the Gooch and beg him to unfuck the franchise for them.
No they don't. It has more to do with the company structure and how things are being run. It has mostly to do with people who make the decisions and greenlight games like these instead of what people want. Based on FFXIII-2 sales, it's clear that more than 50% of people who bought FFXIII didn't return, now will they return for Lightning Returns?

SE still has a lot of talent, they just don't have a proper direction. The latter matters a lot.

After sleeping on it and watching it again, it's even worse than I thought!

I have to wonder what they're expecting with this. It's obviously not going to be a huge seller, and they don't seem to be putting much resources/effort into it. Isn't attaching the FF name to something like this just pointlessly damaging the brand?

Back in my day, each FF game told one full story, and wasn't sequel happy.
That was what was instated from the beginning and now...well the XIII series speaks for itself.

I remember always saying after each closing credits, " What happens now" because I was so engrossed in the story, I even wanted this after FFXIII, but they screwed it up as was said:

So what you're saying is that Square Enix shot themselves in the foot?

They had an opportunity with XIII-2 to expand and close in the gaps of the story, use the open world of Gran Pulse to their advantage and create HD towns and full world exploration but they failed at it and didn't fix anything. I remember always loving walking around the world maps and discovering new towns, and find everything in them

So close to the shitfest it is now, maybe. It's really sad how far it's fallen in just one generation. FFXIV aside, I'm pretty much done with SE. This franchise has none of the redeeming qualities which once made it great.

That is just so sad to see in print, but this gen has destoyed them. They have become a Edios/Flash/iOS gaming company and it sucks, as I've said before as well as many others, we grew up watching each FF releasign and runnign out to get them spending hundreds of hours playing them, but they have mad that impossible now. Where is the imagination, the "Fantasy" and the passion to make great RPGs. Even their crap was good or fun to play. If they do not go back to makign those games, they are just going to vanish and nobody will no them for anything but a publisher, forgettign how many great titles and producers came from there....

Should have been a Vita game.

I would argue that yes, these type of sequels and spin offs have diluted the brand. This game looks like another Dirge of Cerberus.

DQX is suppossed to be a success fot them though, although i know the game didn't cost anywhere near FFXIV.
And FFXI is still doing alright.

I just realized I would love to see timeline chart of Type 0, FF13 (plus sequels), 14 and Versus. With information like number of staff on each project and milestones hit. Just too see where staff is being used. Because I still cant fathom how these projects are being manned/funded

People's infatuation with Lightning has blinded them to everything else that is hideous about what is shown in this trailer.

Oh well.

FF had a good run.

People's infatuation with Lightning has blinded them to everything else that is hideous about what is shown in this trailer.

That's just the thing- who likes Lightning? She's a terrible, vapid, emotionless character.

It's funny how Type 0 is the best of the released FNC games.

I wonder will they ever return to the Squaresoft mentality of making stand alone independed titles?
Probably not. :/

So what will be the public reaction at Jump Festa?

This is still what I am wondering... but we'll see.

Surely some Japanese forums have seen this by now, I wonder how they are reacting? I personally don't see how people can defend some of the background environments (the low quality or the dullness) and this is coming from someone who loved both FFXIII and XIII-2.

I posted about how I feel on this trailer earlier on in this thread and now, after hours... I still feel disappointed. Meh

I blame Wada mostly, followed by Toriyama.

Besides this... I can't help but wonder when they will start on FF15, who will work on it (hopefully not Toriyama again) and if their next gen engine will help get the game done quicker.

We'll see I guess.

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.

Except during Dirge you were still getting updates on big major games like FF12. This is it alongside the doomed FF14. Versus is nowhere in sight, one can only presume 15 is 2-3 years away unless they really want to fucking kill the brand off forever. Theyve fucked away an entire generation of consoles.

And I'm not even permitted to play the actually few good games they produce like Type-0 and Bravely Default. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.

Look at FFXIII

It's amazing that was actually the same engine compared to what we are witnessing in that trailer.

Ok... this looks SO bad to me that originally, I had planned to borrow this game from a friend (Square won't get a dime from me until localized Type-0 comes to North America or Versus XIII gets released) but I won't even do THAT any more. This is YouTube Playthrough worthy at BEST.

I remember reading a thread somewhere about the reactions on Japan Tumblr when LR was announced.

They mirrored much of our own, let me tell you.

seriously, nothing is better than this. they are burning out everything like this, their own obviously frustrated staff included, they could take a break and come with something strong for a new game not another cheap cash grab so bad like this, it's very short term thinking.
How is this going to sell anyway? Fall next year this is going to be utterly irrelevant with all the new consoles and nextgen talk, a game that looks dreadful as it is, not even on par with 2-3 years old current gen games.

This is how I operate as well.

I'm sure 14 is going to find its audience but if they end up taking 5 years to make back the money they poured into it how succesfull of a game can it be?

But is this or nothing. Clearly they don't have the resources to make a full new FF.

That's just the thing- who likes Lightning? She's a terrible, vapid, emotionless character.

They do have resources, S-E is doing quite well. The fact is, as I mentioned, key people have total decision-making power of what gets approved for production. These people are Kitase and by extension Toriyama. Lightning is Toriyama's baby and he tries to push her as a means of becoming a known and respected game director like Sakaguchi (I'm sure Kitase is thinking the same way). Wada doesn't seem to care, Nomura is like: "whatever, I'm going to hang out with Cloud" and doesn't care either.

I'm sure S-E has a number of junior employees that would make great FF titles, but they are not in charge. Toriyama is.

Has the look and feel of one of those Japanese PS2 action games that tended to take place in large, boring, desolate environments. Shockingly bad.
