Nintendo recommends opening Wii U and perform system update before gifting to others

No, DO NOT OPEN the box before giving Wii U as a christmas present. People can handle that install time, getting what's practically a second hand / used console is a much, much, MUCH worse alternative. I don't think I would even accept that gift. I know for sure wouldn't be able to enjoy it.

This strikes me as somewhat OCD. Fair enough - if youre buying electronics for a regular user, let them deal with it. If youre buying for kids, why not set it up ready to go. Kids would much rather be in and playing a new mario game or whatever rather than watching a menu bar do nothing for two hours while millions of other consoles are clogging up the servers on christmas morning.

What products do you use?

i don't know exactly what kinda response you wanted to get out of this, but i use a lot of products.

if you're asking what else could possibly have a 30+ minute update, than just about any smartphone or tablet that isn't fresh off the press. there'll probably be more iOS 6 survivors this holiday season than there will be Wii U update ones.

I somehow doubt you wouldn't be able to enjoy a console that was opened once before you got it. Seriously?

3 years later, you're playing Smash. You've been waiting for years for this moment. You're on the verge of posting it as your GOTY in the NeoGAF GOTY 2014 thread.. but the enjoyment was dulled by the fact that you weren't the first one to enjoy the console. A quick trip to the store a day later and a new Wii U, and every game you own becomes 2 IGN score scales better.

Hey grandma, pro-tip, hook this Wii U thingamajig up to your HDTV and connect it to the internet to perform a system update. Don't fuck it up now. You wouldn't want to ruin Christmas, would you?

I opened my goddaughter's guitar (a little kid's model) and re-tuned it a few times every day so that it will stay in tune when she opens it and wants to play it. Stretchy strings. Now she'll open it, be excited, and immediately be able to play it.

She won't be able to post her pristine guitar unboxing on youtube months after the guitar was released, though, so maybe I screwed up.

Wants the largest console games publisher to avoid Nintendo's platforms.
I got a PS Vita for my nephew, I opened it, created an account, updated the firmware, redeemed the PS+ code and downloaded some games so it's ready for him to play the moment he opens it... I even charged it.
You monster!

I'd say it matters more that you know what the receiver prefers, actually. I would've asked for it to be updated beforehand if it weren't for only including HDMI, as much as I like opening something like this for myself.

Good advice imo. Charge the GamePad too while you're at it, took way longer than the system update.

but you can use the gamepad whilst it's charging, unlike the console when it's downloading the patch, unless of course you select not to download to it which most people won't do.

I'd always been under the impression that you shouldn't use these devices while they're charging, but I guess batteries kept getting better since no one seems to advise against it, even the tablets and smartphones coming out now seem to just straight up assume you want to set things up RIGHT NOW GOGOGO

Relative: "Hey Jimmy, guess what?! I got you the brand new Wii U game device thingo for Christmas!! ... Also, I went to the trouble of connecting it to our internet and downloading the system update so you can play it straight away! It took a few hours to find our wifi password thing then setting up an account and deleting it, it caused a few arguments, but I rang up a friend and he came over to help us through it, but anyway, here you go! ENJOY! Merry Christmas, Jimmy!"

Jimmy: "NO. FUCKING. WAY! ARE YOU SERIOUS? HOW THE FUCK AM I SUPPOSED TO ENJOY THIS FUCKING SECOND HAND PIECE OF SHIT!?!?! YOU'VE FUCKING GOT FINGER PRINTS ALL OVER IT. AND DID YOU FUCKING USE A SCREEN PROTECTOR? JESUS FUCKING CHRIST - KEEP IT, IT'S YOURS NOW!! THANKS A FUCKING LOT. YOU'VE RUINED MY FUCKING CHRISTMAS!!!"

Thanks for the laugh. That had to be sarcasm. I wouldn't even know where to start with such an ungrateful brat. I'd take the console outside, set it on the driveway, and put a sledgehammer right through it just so you can see how much I enjoy purely taking something away from such an undeserving stuck-up snob.

Advice makes sense.

It also makes me a bit sad that this is what the current (and next) generation is all about.

Firmware updates for everybody! All the time!

I might've, but I was insane enough to rebox some of the games I really liked to make them still seem "new" for a little while. Today though, I'd mainly just want it packed back up to best resemble being unopened rather than lamely crammed back in.

people have been joking about nintendo's online for years now. acting like these people aren't going to be eager to blow any online-related mistake nintendo makes out of proportion is just a dumb assumption.
So it's a dumb assumption to think that people wouldn't like 30+ minute updates period (no matter the system)?
I take it you're not familiar with the meaning of the expression, "Blown out of proportion." So... speaking of dumb assumptions...

I read the title and think to myself, "Of course. That's just common sense."

Some people never cease to surprise me, though.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
LOL, Nintendo do it yourself in the factory, wtf...

This doesnt make any sense. Of course future shipemtns of teh console will have the update pre-installed, but do you expect them to recall all already shipped/sold units to update the OS ?

If they weren't stockpiling to try and hit lofty shipment targets they wouldn't be in this mess.

Here's a pro tip for you Nintendo, why don't you do the fucking update first before putting it in the box. Kthxbye

That's obviously going to happen with future consoles but this is for the ones already on the market.

Yup, Nintendo should just make less console at a time so that the consoles in stores are more likely to have up to date firmware >_>

If you don't play it online the first day do you still have to update?

If you want some features like backwards compatibility then yes. Most of the popular games already have several individual game updates as well. If you just want to play some games then you shouldn't have a problem.

I don't see a problem with this hint. I got a N64 many, many years ago from my parents to Christmas - and I found the console ready to play. That was amazing.

@NintendoAmerica Selling #WiiU as a quality product? Pro-tip: preload the latest firmware before wrapping so it's good to go as soon as it's opened!

Hey, how about you connect it all up and do the update, but leave it all connected. Just put the gamepad (charge it) back in the box so everyone can play without needing to plug everything in. All that unwrapping stuff is boring anyway, right?

That's what they're doing with the next shipments.. the consoles sitting out there were manufactured well before launch, so it was kind of impossible to preload them with firmware that didn't exist at the time.

Cue a ton of parents updating their kids' five year old Wii's so they can play NSMBU on Christmas morning.

Let me rephrase, let them do it in the stores.
Better idea make the OS and firmware updates much smaller so that updating takes minutes, instead of hours. It was a huge pain in the ass updating mine.

And fire the bright minds that fucked up the updates and the OS, it's such a mess it's not even funny. I mean almost anyone can see these bottlenecks and think of them before building the OS by looking at the competition. (X360/PS3, hint)

That was day 1, people in this thread are saying that it apparently takes about half an hour now.

Sony and MS need to reply with their own protips.

"Buying a PS3 for someone this Christmas? Cool, that's all you need to do."

What about buying an xbox live sub? Signing up for the two networks?
All systems have their own idiosyncrasies, inconveniences (and updates) so let's not get carried away here. Wii U has slow updates sure, but PS3 and 360 have both been there too.

What a joke. Sure, make sure that your present looks like a hands-me-down.

I'd be ok with carefully slitting the deal on one end, but trying to get those things back in the box looking brand new is difficult.

I'd just leave it untouched. When its opened I'd probably be tasked with setting it up anyway so I'd just leave them to play with other stuff while I did the update. Or just cancel the update and let them play a game while it downloads.

But Nintendo said that they are selling them faster than they can manufacture them.

Either they are still manufacturing new consoles with the old firmware or they are drip-feeding already-manufactured stock to create artificial shortages. And failing.

Please note that neither possibility is mutually exclusive.
