So anyway, I've been re-reading this book lately:

9781852869465.jpg

It's not what you think.

It's got lots of informative essays and thoughtful analysis. I don't quite buy some of their reasoning with regards to why certain types of work get made but in general it's a surprisingly good read.

Which shouldn't be that surprising considering all the books I've read by Helen McCarthy and Jonathan Clements are excellent. I feel like they have a more useful approach to analysing anime than, say, Susan J Napier who writes some very interesting analysis which occasionally seem a little too literary and selective. As opposed to her they tackle the anime head on by examining the cultural factors which influence a works creation as well as history of particular genres and tropes.

I don't even have an appropriate response to that, really. I can't think of anything constructive to write, nor does my .gif folder have any material suitable to react to the enormity of such a comment.

This is why I don't listen to the ANNcast.

They say the greatest of art renders you speechless.

Good work.

The title and cover were clearly devised to help sell what's actually a pretty serious book! The "guide" segment of the book is only about 40 pages in length.

Judging by your posts, and the posts of others who dispense news, it seems like the two languages that are the most helpful in keeping up to date with animation news are Japanese and French. I suppose that should come as no surprise considering they're the two largest anime markets in the world.
Maybe we should all post in French, at least for the remainder of this OT.

Ce n'est que si nous utilisons tous Google traduction pour nous aider à communiquer les uns avec les autres parce que je ne suis pas apprendre le français juste pour poster sur ce thread.

lol, who said that? Or are you just making fun of the several members (including mods) that ignore anything posted by someone with an anime avatar?

I think this higher quality Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet promotional video hasn't been posted yet:

And it was posted already by duckroll, now I realize!

It is useful, yes... knowing a little of Italian also could be considered as important, although much more if we are talking about the Japanese graphical novel market above the Japanese animation one.

Sounds like MadPierrot is holding a grudge or something against people who slandered those with anime avatars. He should let it go!

It's the latter, hahah.

I actually originally attributed the quote just to the mods but I fear summoning them here on bad terms if they're the kind that search their names :lol

Guess it is confession time.

I for once hate anyone and devalue any of their contributions if they do not sport a crop from a famous painting as their avatar.

Edit: I might allow scenes from the movie canon as avatars, but only if I personally like the specific work and director.

Fuck yeah, Sanji & a cooking contest. Carmen and her henchmen had a great visual quality to them that had me laughing. Somewhat decent integration with the other cast doing their thing but fuck Buggy.

Oh hey, you're watching this again, and I'm pretty sure you're in the middle of some really shitty filler.

Once again, just let me know and I'll give you a list of all the skippable episodes. I know you said you'd probably watch them anyway, but just in case you reach the breaking point.

Is France the second-largest anime market in the world, or just the most attentive foreign market? I'm curious what the history is behind that.

So what are the criteria for a piece of art from Pixiv being famous? Because I value your approval and don't want to lose it.

I will probably never stop being tsuntsun toward the forum as a whole. And this is just one of many reaons!

That's a direct quote I heard from a podcast from someone who lives and works in France and the United Kingdom but I don't actually have any evidence to back up his claim. I imagine I could do a little digging on the internet to try and verify his statement.

Clements's ANIME: A History of the Japanese Animation Industry should be a good read, if it does come out next year.

I'll confess to never having read the original Count of Monte Cristo, which is probably something I should correct (although I have read The Star's Tennis Balls, which is pretty much the same thing, right?). My understanding was that it is sort of pulpy, though, isn't it? Or is that just using "pulp" incorrectly as a synonym for "popular"?
It depends on what you mean by pulp I guess. There isn't really a strict definition, but in this context it was used to cast a derogatory light on the serialized form the novel was originally released in.

Yeah I've been looking forward to that one for awhile. I should really keep digging through School Girl Milky Crisis as it's been quite fascinating so far. There have been very books about anime that I've actually enjoyed reading, half of them turn out to be collections of rather far-fetched essays written by students.

『Tous fiction!』

So is this a book on erotic anime ie what most people usually associate with Hentai or about erotic scenes and similar imagery in a lot of anime. You make it sound like it should be a thing I should give a read at some point. (especially if it's the later)

I only came equipped to deal with bad anime opinions. I was not prepared for people to say The Count of Monte Cristo by Dumas is shallow because it is an adventure story, that it was pulp, or that Gankutsuou is deeper than the novel ever was.
Gankutsuou's easily my favourite adaptation of the book but... geez.

I spoke to Jonathan Clements once (well, twice, technically). Nice guy. Signed my copy of School Girl Milky Crisis and everything.

Whilst I recognise the origin of the statement you are making, the fact that you used an image from Gakuen Alice resulted in me being very confused as to whether or not you were using it in the correct fashion.

That's the "joke".

Well, it's not really a joke. It's something I think about every single time someone posts the word "Kugiloli".

Hotaru is a "tsundere" little girl voiced by Rie Kugimiya. Does that make her a Kugiloli? There's food for thought for a Sunday night...

One day we will have to help Mad Pierrot search for that personal liberation, free him and make him leave this nest while accepting that this... 'little piece of peace on the Internet' that are this forums is, in every light you see it and on every nook it has, always welcoming.

I kid, I kid... I'm not one to say anything as I don't post practically anything outside this haven! But being afraid isn't my problem, that much I can vouch to!
